Lose5poundsAre Those Last Five Pounds Weighing You Down?

Scale2

It can be beyond frustrating to be so close to your weight loss goal, and despite all your efforts, the scale just won't budge anymore.   You're eating right, exercising, doing all the things that got you this far, and you've hit a plateau.

So, what's the number one reason your weight has stalled?  You weigh LESS now -- but are you eating the same as you did ten pounds ago?  If the answer is yes, then it may be time to reduce your caloric intake to account for your present weight.

In addition, your body can sense if you haven't changed your exercise routine in awhile.  In fact, your body will switch to maintenance mode, making it hard to get the same effects as when you started. Try exercising ten to twenty minutes longer than normal. This should boost your metabolic rate and help you burn calories more efficiently.  Or, try adding weight resistance.  This could be the key towards breaking out of your rut.

Whether you need to jump-start a stalled diet or overcome a weight-loss crisis, we're here to help you finish what you started.  Here are some great tricks to help you lose those last five pounds.

 Life After Menopause -

A Message for Women

Mature woman smiling

For many women, menopause is just the beginning of the aging process.  In fact, many post-menopausal women experience annoying and uncomfortable hot- flashes that may interfere with day-to-day activities.

Lawrence OB/GYN is testing an investigational non-hormonal drug to determine if it safely and effectively treats this symptom.

If you are 40 or older, post-menopausal, and experiencing  7-8 moderate to severe hot flashes in a 24-hour period, you may be eligible to participate in this research study.  Qualified participants will receive all study-related care and study drug at no charge.

To find out more about how you may be able to participate in this research study, call Marianne at (609) 803-2378, or e-mail miavecchia@

August 2011

August is World Breastfeeding Awareness Month!

Mom and newborn

Greetings!

August is World Breastfeeding Month! In fact, the first week of August was celebrated throughout the world as World Breastfeeding Week.

You've probably heard the saying, "Breast is best," and there is a lot of research to back that statement.  Did you know that human breast milk contains at least 100 ingredients that can't be found in cow's milk?  Breastfeeding may take a little more effort than formula feeding at first.  But the benefits are worth the effort.  Research shows that breastfed infants have feMother and baby holding handswer and and shorter episodes of illness.  Breastfeeding also protects against developing chronic diseases such as: celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, and childhood cancers.

The benefits aren't just for babies - turns out moms who breastfeed can burn as much as 600 calories a day without even breaking a sweat.  Plus, it helps protect a woman against Type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and postpartum depression.  Best of all, moms who breastfed report psychological benefits such as increased self-confidence and a stronger sense of connection with their babies. Click here to learn more about the benefits of breast feeding.

While we are advocates for breastfeeding, we also understand that some health problems can occur that make it difficult for a woman to breastfeed.  We've treated many common breastfeeding problems  -- perhaps you're having difficulty with your milk supply, the baby isn't latching on, etc.  Whatever the issue may be, we'll help you find a solution that's right for you and your child.

Whether you're a mother or not, one thing is for sure - we must continue to support our fellow women who breastfeed. Many women have reported feeling uncomfortable breastfeeding in public, even doing so discreetly. But it is important to remember that you are feeding your baby. Even though it may seem taboo in some places, awareness of the need to support new breastfeeding mothers is building.  Most of all, it is important to remember that you are meeting your baby's need and should be proud of your commitment!

SummerPregnancyYou Don't Have to Suffer from Urinary Incontinence Anymore.

By Tim Alloway, MSPT

Urinary Incontinence (UI) is an exceedingly common disorder that affects many people ranging from children to adults.  UI occurs due to problems with the muscles and nerves that help to hold or release urine from the bladder.  It primarily affects women, but both women and men can become incontinent from neurological injury, pelvic floor weakness, childbirth, urethral sphincter weakness, low estrogen levels, scar tissue, obesity, episiotomy or hysterectomy, to name a few.  Older women experience UI more often than their younger counterparts but incontinence is not inevitable with age.  No single treatment works for everyone but many women can find help without surgery.

Tim Alloway
Tim Alloway, MPST.

UI generally falls into four different categories; stress, urge, overflow or mixed incontinence.  Stress Incontinence happens when the bladder is incapable of handling the increased pressure that occurs during exercise, sneezing, coughing or sexual intercourse.  With inadequate contraction of thesphincter muscle, urine can leak in small or large amounts.  Urge Incontinence is caused by sudden, involuntary bladder contraction; providing an overwhelming urge to urinate.  Overflow Incontinence is a condition in which the bladder becomes overfilled because it cannot be fully emptied, eventually leading to involuntary leakage.  In some patients, all three of these categories of incontinence are involved; leading to the diagnosis of Mixed Incontinence.  Regardless of the type of UI, all disorders lead to a tremendous amount of emotional stress for the patient.

UI can be improved in most cases; however, few patients with incontinence discuss the condition with their healthcare provider.  This is compounded by the belief that there is no treatment for UI other than surgeries or medication.  Thankfully, the medical community has begun to realize the effectiveness of Physical Therapy in treating the symptoms of UI.  A study in March of 2008 in Annals of Internal Medicine reported that Physical Therapy can help patients manage, if not alleviate, the symptoms of UI.  This significant study shows the importance of Physical Therapy in the treatment of UI.

Many women either suffer in silence or turn to drugs, surgeries or appliances when a conservative approach can help.  Physical Therapy provides effective and comprehensive treatment for many women's issues including incontinence.  If you are suffering from this or other related conditions (i.e. pelvic pain, vulvodynia, coccygodynia, interstitial cystitis, pain with intercourse or infertility), Please let your healthcare provider know. You don't have to suffer any longer!
