Summer is for Salads!
| |
Salads are essential summer eating. With veggies at the peak of freshness, treat yourself to the delicious diversity a salad can offer.
Many of us still think of salad as a start to the meal, but it can be the meal itself, if you load it up with the right ingredients. For starters, ditch the iceberg lettuce and try some spinach. Spinach is packed with vital nutrients such as iron and beta-carotene, and is a good source of fiber. Also, it's low in calories (only 40 calories per 1 cup) and is packed full of your daily requirements of Vitamins A & K.
For some tasty ideas, here are the Top 10 Spinach Salad recipes. Bon appetit!

Life After Menopause -
A Message for Women | | |
If you're one of the more than 30 million postmenopausal women experiencing discomfort due to vulvovaginal atrophy
(commonly referred to as vaginal dryness) then you know just how uncomfortable the persistent itching, burning, redness, and inflammation can be. And just how much it can affect your everyday life. It's estimated that at least half of all surgically and naturally postmenopausal women suffer from vaginal dryness.
Women who are postmenopausal (or have had both ovaries removed) and are experiencing discomfort due to vaginal dryness are invited to find out if they may qualify for a clinical research study to determine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication for the symptoms caused by vaginal dryness.
Each woman will be evaluated to determine her eligibility. Among other criteria, you must be surgically or naturally postmenopausal to qualify. Those who qualify will receive study medication, study-related medical exams, and lab tests at no charge.
To find out more about how you may able to participate in this research study, call Marianne at (609) 803-2379, or e-mail miavecchia@

July is National Park and Recreation Month!
|

|
Greetings!
Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation's official Park and Recreation Month. We often overlook how important parks are in our daily lives and how they serve as a key element to our health and well-being. This year's "Rock Your Park" campaign is focused on raising awareness of this issue and getting people engaged in visiting, supporting and preserving this critical resource. When was the last time you visited your local park? If you can't remember, then maybe it's time to check out the beautiful scenery, hike a trail, go swimming, or just pack up a picnic lunch and enjoy your surroundings. Find a park in New Jersey and/or Pennsylvania and find some fun! Speaking of summer fun, did you know that Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month back in 1984? In fact, the third Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day. While our mission is always to promote a healthy lifestyle, like you, we can't help but indulge our sweet tooth once in awhile. This year, why not try something new and make your own homemade ice-cream? Have a scoop (or two) of your favorite flavor, head to a nearby park for a stroll, and enjoy yourself!
If you find yourself yearning to explore and get away from it all, but are on a budget, look no further than New Jersey and Pennsylvania. We are fortunate to have two great states that offer tons of recreation, shopping and lots of cool things to see and do. Need some ideas of where to go? Check out our article here. Don't forget that next month will be the first-ever "Ladies Night Celebration" with the Trenton Thunder, held on Saturday, August 20th. It's not too late to enter our "Woman of the Year" essay contest. If you know of someone who you think deserves recognition, why not enter? Did we mention that the winner will receive some fantastic prizes, including front-row game seats to the Thunder game that evening, along with special VIP treatment? Don't wait - enter today and honor a special woman in your life! While you're spending time outdoors this summer, remember that higher temperatures mean higher health risks when exercising outside. Be sure to read, "Keeping Cool in Hot Weather," before you start your workout. Any woman who is pregnant during the summer months needs to be especially careful of scorching temperatures, as it is very easy for moms-to-be to become overheated and not even know it. Here are some precautions you can follow to help you -- and your unborn baby -- stay cool. With warm regards, The Practitioners and Staff of Lawrence OB/GYN |

Beat The Heat During Pregnancy This Summer
|
While many people are basking in the lazy, hazy days of summer, for a mom-to-be, this time of year can be miserable. It can be incredibly difficult to stay comfortable when the thermometer is reading in the 90's (and let's not forget to add the heat index, which can make it feel like it's above 100). As the mercury rises, expectant mothers need to take special care of themselves, as the heat can cause a variety of medical problems for both Mom and Baby. One of the biggest concerns is dehydration. It's important during pregnancy to drink plenty of fluids, but this is especially true if the body is deprived of fluids it needs due to excess sweating. According to Pregnancy Today, dehydration can cause contractions, which in turn can cause the premature delivery of the baby. This occurs when an expectant mom is dehydrated, she loses part of her blood volume, which increases the concentration of oxytocin, the hormone responsible for contractions. When a pregnant woman becomes overheated, she has increased risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and increased swelling of the extremities. However, as the baby's temperature is always 1 degree Celsius higher than Mom's and Baby does not have the ability to sweat, the risk to the baby increases as Mom's temperature goes up. So, what can you do to stay cool? Here are some simple guidelines you can follow to help you cope with the summer heat.
