Woman in her forties

For many women, menopause is just the beginning of the aging process.  In fact, many post-menopausal women experience annoying and uncomfortable hot- flashes that may interfere with day-to-day activities.

Lawrence OB/GYN is testing an investigational non-hormonal drug to determine if it safely and effectively treats this symptom.

If you are 40 or older, post-menopausal, and experiencing  7-8 moderate to severe hot flashes in a 24-hour period, you may be eligible to participate in this research study.  Qualified participants will receive all study-related care and study drug at no charge.

To find out more about how you may be able to participate in this research study, call Marianne at (609) 803-2379, or e-mail miavecchia@

June 2011

June is National Great Outdoors Month!

Woman running on the beach

Greetings!

Our message to you this month?  Get outdoors!  It's time to get unplugged and get back to nature.  Think back to when you were a kid - didn't your parents always tell you to go play outside? Research has shown that the simple act of walking improves concentration, creativity and reduces stress; not to mention it can also help you maintain a healthy weight.  Best of all, it costs nothing to get started but a good pair of sneakers.

Not quite ready to put on that new bikini?  If you're still trying to shed those extra pounds before hitting the beach, we've got you covered!  Learn how you can transform your workout into a fat-blasting routine.

We have two exciting upcoming events to put on your calendar to help keep you motivated this summer...

First, join us as we celebrate the great outdoors and come to the 7th Annual Freedom Festival on Saturday, June 25th!   We are proud to sponsor this event, which is loaded with fun-filled family oriented entertainment and activities for all ages.  You won't want to miss it!

Speaking of contests, congratulations to Dawn Falzone for being the winner of our Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook giveaway!  Happy cooking, Dawn!

While we hope you enjoy this warm summer weather, we want to remind you to take care of your skin when you're in the sun.  If you find yourself caring more about your tan than wearing sunscreen, you may want to read this important article about skin cancer and see if it describes you.  While summer is the perfect time to get outside, explore and get active, don't forget to be sun-smart.

sunscreenDon't Let the Sun Become Your Worst Enemy

All winter long, we yearn to feel the warmth of the sun on our face and bodies.   It's a fact that we need sunlight to help our bodies produce vitamin D, which promotes bone growth and strengthens our immune systems.  However, we all know that like many things, the sun is only good in small moderation...about 30 minutes a week of exposure, to be exact, is considered a healthy dose.  That usually exceeds the typical sunbather's time to even get comfortable on their beach chair.

Don't hit the beach without your sunscreen.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, especially among young people.  An estimated 68,130 Americans will be diagnosed this year with melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and 8,700 will die from it.

Think tanning beds are a safe alternative?  Think again.  Indoor tanning is one of the reasons melanoma is on the rise.  A recent study from the University of Michigan showed that frequent tanning bed users are three times more likely to develop melanoma than non-users.  Simply put, all UV-rays can cause skin cancer.

Despite the fact that most women know they should wear sunscreen year round, only 31% actually do, according to Prevention magazine.  If that's you, then you may want to read the 7 most common excuses women give for going outdoors unprotected.  Take a moment to educate yourself on why sunscreen is one thing you should never leave the house without.  Your skin will thank you for it!
