| | Scientists have developed a DNA test that scans the mother's blood for signs of Down syndrome, possibly signaling a steep decline in the number of children born with the genetic defect.
The current prenatal screening test for Down syndrome is generally offered to women over age 35, when the incidence of Down syndrome births increases. If the new blood test, which is still in development, is made widely available, it will likely be offered to all pregnant women...but is that a good thing? Read more... |

Lawrence OB/GYN wants you to be HEART SMART!
|

|
|
Greetings!
We are proud to present our very first e-newsletter!
Each month, we'll be sharing the latest information affecting women's health and wellness from puberty through menopause. You'll have access to important news about our practice and services, get to know our friendly staff, be the first to know about our seminars and classes and most importantly, we'll provide you with invaluable insight into the latest news and research you need to know to help stay healthy.
This month marks a very important month for women: National American Heart month. Although heart disease is often thought of as a "man's disease," what most patients don't know is that it is the leading cause of death in women over 40 years old, especially after menopause. Every year, more than 400,000 U.S. women die of heart disease. This translates to approximately one death every minute.
Please take a moment to read this important article, where you'll receive answers to commonly asked questions such as, "Why is heart disease associated with menopause? How can menopausal women reduce their risk? Can hormone replacement therapy (HRT) reduce my risk of heart disease?"
While many of us know approximately how much we weigh, there's another number that is just as important: your cholesterol. Know your numbers so you can lead a longer, stronger life. Please feel free to speak with any one of our physicians if you have any questions or concerns.
For more information and facts on women and heart disease, see the Women and Heart Disease Fact Sheet. Make it your mission to fight heart disease in women by supporting the American Heart Association's "Go Red" campaign. With warm regards, Your friends at Lawrence OB/GYN |
Is Your Child's Car Seat Safe?
| Last week, the National Highway Traffic Administration announced that over 800,000 child safety seats were being recalled due to concerns about a potentially dangerous problem with the locking-and-release mechanism. The seats were made by Dorel Consumer Group between May 1, 2008 and April 30, 2009. They include infant, convertible, and booster child restraint systems marketed under brand names including Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety First. The concern is that the harness might loosen as a child moves around, raising the risk of injury in a crash.
