| Getting RESULTS--Tip for Being Essential
RESULTS--the first part of the REACH Framework. What does is mean to get results? At home, you might feel instant satisfaction from mowing the lawn or vacuuming. Or completing the deck in time for a summer party. Or graduating from college. Results can be small or large--but they are always significant in achieving a goal.
Getting results in the workplace is similar to home, except you may have a team to work with to achieve the goal--no matter the size. Here are some important tips about achieving results at work:
- Do not fall victim to "The end justifies the means" thinking. Getting results does not justify violating ethical or legal requirements.
- In most organizatons, team results matter. Individual results should always contribute to the team's success.
- Helping the team achieve success means doing what they need--not necessarily what you want.
- Always link your results to the goals of the organization. There is no value for you or your organization to get results that don't mean anything.
- Celebrate achieving both incremental and end of project results.

Q&A:
Here is a question from Mary in Washington, D.C.:
"I have an employee who gets results, but continually climbs the backs of his co-workers to do it. What can I do?"
Our Answer: This is a real problem, Mary. In any organization, there are a few employees who get the work done, but don't do it in the right way. This shows up in a couple of ways:
Some employees get results by employing unethical or illegal means. These employees should be fired regardless of the kind of results they get. They are setting the wrong tone for your organization and bring unnecessary risk into the workplace!
Other employees get results by denigrating their team members or even taking credit for work they didn't do. This is also a disturbing habit and demoralizing to the team. In this case, the employee can be coached in the following ways:
Ask open-ended questions about the tasks to bring out all the players: Who else was involved in this project? How did they help achieve the results? Who else do you need to help you get better results in this area?
Have a frank conversation with the employee about how to improve his work. Discuss the values of the organization and how important the team is--and how he should get results in the right way.
Set performance goals that motivate the employee to work well with others. Reward the team rather than encouraging competitiveness by recognizing only individuals.
