Workplace Success Myths & Tips March 2010

Essential Employee Book Cover
Greetings!

Welcome to our first Workplace Success Myths and Tips! You are receiving this email because of your association with Judy Free, Traci Maddox, Sage Peak Associates, or The Essential Employee.

Our purpose is to identify workplace myths that can actually damage your career; to provide you with information on workplace trends and issues; and to answer your questions about becoming more essential in the workplace-or motivating your employees or kids to be more essential.

Whether you are an educator, a supervisor, an executive, an employee, or a Mom or Dad with kids who are about to enter the workplace, we hope you will find nuggets that are useful for your purposes.

Workplace Myth #1
"Look for a career in a place you want to live or stay for a long time.  Loyalty and time served will get you promoted."

Have you heard this one before?  You may have heard it from a Baby Boomer, because in their time, this was true-it was expected-and that's how people chose their careers.  But in today's workplace, this myth couldn't be further from the truth!

Our world today is much more complex than ever before.  It demands variety and versatility and the merging of sciences and approaches.  Now more than ever, a successful career is not a straight path!  People with a variety of experiences and diverse perspectives will have more opportunities for growth.  So, while loyalty is always a part of being essential in the workplace; time served is, well, just time served.

Today's Workplace Trend
Did you know... employees entering the workforce today will have 10-14 jobs before they turn 38 years old?  That's what the U.S. Department of Labor reports.  Today's employees are loyal to their skills - not to their employers.  They see work not as a place you go, but as something you do.  A "job for life" is an alien concept for today's employees. (Source:  Karl Fisch; ShiftHappens)

And now, with the current economy, many people are finding that they must compete for jobs when they didn't expect to. Our environment is driving employees to be more loyal to skills because job changes will continue.

How many jobs have you held?  What made you competitive in pursuing new positions?  What will make you the employee others desire regardless of which workplace you choose?

What People are Saying about
 "The Essential Employee"

"A page-turner! A simple, but effective way to illustrate the five behaviors that are critical for success and retention in today's highly competitive workplace. I highly recommend this engaging book as a resource for the new employee and instructor-led or web-based workforce training at the secondary or community college level."
- Roberta Nichols, PhD

"The appeal of this book is that it doesn't read like a text book. The authors' points are made via a story about a new employee that most of us can relate to, whether it's the first "real" job, career change, or just a move within your current organization. The book has valuable lessons for employees, managers, and executives."

- Christine M., Executive

About Us
Judy Free and Traci Maddox are friends, colleagues, and co-authors of "The Essential Employee."  They met in 1999 and worked together for several years as organization consultants-helping large and small organizations implement change.  During their work together, they discovered a mutual passion for helping individuals succeed!  And so they embarked on the journey to help employees become more successful in the workplace.  Most books are written for leaders and managers-but Traci and Judy thought employees could benefit from their own book!  Thus, Carmen (our heroine) was born to teach all of us how to be more essential.

Traci and Judy conduct speaking engagements and workshops all over the country-helping others understand and use the REACH framework outlined in their book.  In addition, they both own thriving consulting practices and work on a wide variety of projects like strategic planning, change management, teambuilding, facilitation, and training.  Their desire is to help individuals and organizations REACH their Peaks!
