Greetings!
I hope 2011 is off to a happy and healthy start for you and your family. Here at EmergyCare the new year always means an especially busy time for us. As the snow flies more people need assistance getting to their medical appointments such as dialysis and cancer treatments. The slippery roads unfortunately increase the need for our emergency response service. So far in 2011 we've already responded to 2,156 requests for assistance across our service area of Erie, Millcreek, Erie County, Titusville, Corry, Warren and Kane. As we look towards our goals for the year ahead we will continue to be guided by our Strategic Plan as we strive to fulfill our vision to be the industry leader in emergency medical services. I invite you to be a partner in our vision. You can help by volunteering, making a donation or spreading the word about the good work EmergyCare is doing. Feel free to get in touch with me at bhagerty@emergycare.org if you want to get involved in our life-saving mission. Sincerely,
Bill Hagerty Executive Director |
EmergyCare Training Institute
Make 2011 the year you learn life-saving skills
The EmergyCare Training Institute is gearing up for another year of providing life-saving skills education to medical providers, school and daycare workers, volunteer fire departments and caring citizens who want to have the skills to help when a medical emergency strikes.
The CPR class is offered monthly and provides four hours of instruction in recognizing the signs of four major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest and foreign body airway obstruction (choking). The class also teaches the basics of adult CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) which are becoming increasingly common in public places. Child and infant emergencies will also be covered. Education Coordinator Jim Kifer suggests "the CPR class is a great way for the average person to arm themselves with basic life-saving techniques that could save the life of a family member or perfect stranger some day."
For those interested in more detailed instruction or a career in the emergency medical field, there are two Emergency Medical Technician - Basic classes starting in early February. One will be held at EmergyCare and the other at the Union City Fire Department. This class provides 129 hours of instruction over five months covering the knowledge and skills needed to provide basic pre-hospital care: assessment of injuries and illness; CPR; control of bleeding and shock; overview of anatomy and physiology; and more. Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to sit for the PA practical skills and written examination to try to obtain their EMT certification through the PA Dept. of Health.
For more details and registration information on the CPR or EMT classes, please visit our website at www.emergycare.org.
The EmergyCare Training Institute has been accredited by the PA Department of Health since 1985. Last year it provided training to 3,296 students in a variety of classes including EMT, Paramedic, CPR, Pediatric First Aid, ACLS, and more. |

About Us
EmergyCare is the largest nonprofit ambulance service in all of Pennsylvania. We are also Pennsylvania's only truly comprehensive medical transport service providing everything from non-emergency wheelchair and medical taxi transport, to emergency ambulance and air medical services with LifeStar helicopter. EmergyCare serves all of Erie County, Titusville, Kane and Warren.
EmergyCare is so much more than just an ambulance service. Our mission is, of course, saving lives in emergency situations but on a day-to-day basis we keep people connected to the healthcare system, provide educational opportunities, advocate for the EMS industry and lead collaborative efforts to make sure the communities we serve get the level of service they deserve. |
