Welcome Back Students, Families, and Staff!
Dear Parents and Community Members:
I would like to welcome all of our students, parents, and employees back to school! I hope that you have enjoyed the summer break and spent quality time with your family and friends. Teachers' returned to work on Monday, August 8th. Students will be back in class on August 15th.
Over the summer, the Florida Department of Education announced school and district grades for 2011. We're proud to have earned an "A" rating for the 10th consecutive year. This achievement is a reflection of the commitment of our teachers, administrators, staff and students, as well as the ongoing support from our parents and community. Congratulations!
This school year, our schools are continuing to focus on providing students with an education that meets the ever-changing demands of the 21st Century. We want to foster a learning environment that embraces the new ways students learn and become engaged in their world. A major component of 21st Century learning is the technology that impacts students' everyday lives and future. Districtwide, we are providing professional development opportunities to assist our teachers as they incorporate technology into their daily classroom instruction.
We are also committed to providing students with state-of-the-art facilities. Among the construction projects completed over the summer are a new Administration and Classroom Building at South Fork High, as well as a new 2-story classroom building at Warfield Elementary. In addition, there has been significant remodeling work at Crystal Lake Elementary and Pinewood Elementary, and upgrades at the Environmental Studies Center. We're excited to have these facilities ready for the new school year.
Our District is truly fortunate to have outstanding teachers, administrators, and staff who are dedicated to ensuring students meet and exceed their academic goals. I encourage parents to be involved in their child's education and to partner with us as we work to provide our students with an exceptional foundation for success.
Thank you for all that you do for our students and schools.
Sincerely,
Nancy Kline
Superintendent

Back to School Tips for Families
Students Head Back to School on Monday, August 15th!
To help students and families prepare for the start of school, below are reminders, tips and important information!
Back-to-School Quick Links:
2011-2012 School Year Calendar
School Open House and Orientation Dates/Times
Kindergarten Registration
Extended Day Fall Registration
New School Hours and Attendance:
Elementary, MIddle, and High schools across the District will be following new school hours beginning in the 2011-2012 school year. Click here to view a school-by-school listing of the new school start and dismissal times. The start times reflect the time instruction begins in the classroom, so please make arrangements to have students arrive to school on time each day.

Regular School Attendance is a key part to student success. When students miss class, they are missing valuable teacher instruction. District data shows students that miss fewer days of school are more likely to achieve higher levels of academic success. Click here to learn more about the District's Bring It 180 Attendance Campaign.
School Immunizations:
Florida law requires students entering a Florida school for the first time to have a Florida Certificate of Immunization (Florida Department of Health Form #3040). In addition, students entering 7th grade in the 2011-2012 school year must also have a Tdap Booster prior to starting school.
Parents of students who will be entering 7th grade in the 2011-2012 school year who have not already received this booster should contact their family physician or call the Martin County Health Department, which provides the vaccination for free. Parents can call 772-221-4000, Ext. 2249 to schedule an appointment.
School Bus Routes & School Bus Safety Information:
School Bus Routes for the 2011-2012 school year are now posted online on the District's website, www.martinschools.org. The routes can be accessed from the home page, by clicking on the Parents & Students button and selecting "Bus Routes" from the drop-down menu.
School Bus Safety Tips:
- Drivers are urged to use extra caution on the road, particularly during the early morning and afternoon hours, when students are walking/biking to or from school or the bus stop. Parents are encouraged to talk with their children about traffic safety issues, such as using sidewalks whenever possible, and to always follow proper safety procedures if a student has to cross a street.
- At school bus stops, students must stay away from the 12-foot danger zone around the bus, except when being directed by the driver to get on or off the bus.
- Students should be reminded to NEVER pick up an object that has been dropped under, near or behind a bus. Always ask the driver for help--and always wait for the driver to signal that it is safe to cross the road or load onto the bus. Students should arrive at their bus stop with plenty of time to spare. All parents with children in Pre-K through 5th grade are encouraged to pin or place a tag on their child's clothing or backpack that includes the child's name, daytime contact phone number, and bus stop. Make sure this tag is visible. It will help prevent students from getting on or off the bus at the wrong stop.
- Pre-K and kindergarten students must be greeted at the bus stop by a parent/guardian each afternoon. For safety reasons, they will not be released from the bus unless they are escorted by a parent/guardian.
- Also, during the first week of school, buses may run late in the afternoon because schools are doing extra checks to ensure all students have boarded the correct buses. Parents are asked to be patient.
To report any school bus problems or concerns and to get answers to questions regarding school bus schedules or routes, please contact the District's Transportation Department at 219-1287, Extension 101. For additional school bus safety tips, click here.
School Breakfast / Lunch
School Breakfast/Lunch Menus
For students who will be packing a lunch, parents are encouraged to make healthy choices and not pack foods that will spoil and/or need to be refrigerated.
-
If a student will be buying breakfast/lunch, parents need to send money with their child or add funds to their student's cafeteria account. Cafeteria accounts are provided to every enrolled student. Parents can add money to their child's cafeteria account by sending cash, check, or a money order with their student to school. They can also prepay online by using MealpayPlus. MealpayPlus will be accepting online payments for the 2011-2012 school year as of August 11th.
- Information on how to apply for the Free or Reduced Priced Meals Program will be provided to students at the start of the school year. Families only need to submit one application. Applications will be sent home with all elementary aged students. Parents can also contact their student's school cafeteria manager, call or visit the Food and Nutrition Services Department, located at 1050 East10th Street in Stuart, 772-223-2655, or apply online by visiting the Food and Nutrition Services Department website. The online application site will be available for use after August 11th.
We are looking forward to another successful school year! For additional Back-to-School information, please contact your child's school directly. |
