Congratulations on a Successful School Year!
Nancy Kline

Dear Parents, Families, and Community Members:

It is hard to believe that the last day of school is already upon us.  It has been an incredibly successful school year!  Thank you to all of our teachers, administrators, staff and families for your hard work on behalf of our students.

Summer Programs Gearing Up

While the summer break is about to begin, we are excited to welcome students to the District's various summer programs, including Extended School Year for ESE students, 3rd Grade Reading Camp, and the summer camp programs offered through Extended Day and the Environmental Studies Center.

Our District takes pride in continuing to provide these quality programs for our students and families despite declining revenues.

FCAT and End of Course Exam Scores Among the Highest in the State

The Florida Department of Education has released all of the FCAT scores for Reading, Math, Writing and Science, as well as End of Course exams for Algebra I.  The results show Martin County exceeds the state average in every subject and grade level tested.  In addition, Martin County's scores are among the highest in the state, with many subjects (by grade level) ranking among the top ten highest scores statewide.  These are tremendous accomplishments and I congratulate our schools and students for their efforts.

Now that the scores have been provided by the state, we're awaiting the final calculations for our school grades.  We expect to receive those in the very near future.

Superintendent's 2011-2012 Recommended Budget -  No Layoffs!

As we prepare for the 2011-2012 school  year, I would to thank all those who participated in the budget process.   There has been an amazing amount of collaboration with both of the District's unions, MCEA and AFSCME, in implementing cost-saving initiatives.  We have also received valuable input from community members, Martin County Taxpayers Association, local business partners, and
District teachers and staff.

We are extremely proud to have a proposed budget for FY 2012, which has been tentatively approved by the School Board, that does not include any recommended layoffs.  Maintaining student programs and personnel has remained the District's priority.

I appreciate the support for the Tentative Budget from School Board Chair Sue Hershey, as well as the unanimous support from Vice Chair Laurie Gaylord, and Board members Dr. David Anderson, Maura Barry-Sorenson, and Michael Busha.

Summer Learning

During this time off from school, it is our hope that students will continue their learning by taking time to read!  Public libraries are a wonderful, free resource for books and summer activities.  By encouraging children to read, parents are helping them to sustain and build upon the skills they developed during the school year.

Once again, thank you for your support and have a happy, healthy, and safe summer break.

Sincerely,
Nancy Kline
