Message from the Superintendent

Nancy Kline
Dear Parents, Families, and Community Members:

This time of year is always extremely exciting as students and schools begin to receive recognition for their many accomplishments during the school year.   As we prepare for the start of Spring Break, I would like to provide you with the following updates.

Budget Preparations
The Florida Legislative Session is currently underway in Tallahassee.   I traveled to the Capitol last week to attend a conference for Florida school superintendents.  During that time, I was able to attend Legislative meetings and discuss with Florida Department of Education officials various education-related proposals.

While we are still waiting for the final budget from the State, our District staff continues to plan and prepare for the upcoming fiscal year. Throughout this process, I remain steadfast in my belief that student programs and personnel are our District's priority.  A preliminary budget forecasting School Board Workshop will take place on April 20th at 2:00 P.M. prior to the Regular School Board Meeting, which will be held at 4 P.M., at Indiantown Middle School.

Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey
The 2010 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey results for Martin County are now available.  This survey is administered every two years by the state to a random selection of middle and high school students. The survey highlights many encouraging findings, including:
  • A lower percentage of high school youth report using alcohol at 13 years or younger;
  • Fewer middle and high school youth report using alcohol in the past 30 days;
  • Fewer high school youth report binge drinking;
  • Fewer middle and high school youth report using cigarettes in the past 30 days; and
  • Fewer high school youth report using marijuana in the past 30 days.
The Martin County School District, in partnership with the Shared Services Network, has worked diligently over the past ten years to communicate a consistent prevention message to students regarding alcohol and other drug use.  While the 2010 survey shows progress is being made, we need the support and commitment of all our families to truly make a difference with our students.  I encourage parents to Be the Influence in helping teenagers make responsible decisions and choices.

Free & Reduced Meals
I would like to remind all of our families that they can apply
for the Free & Reduced Meals program at any time during the school year.  Applications are available online on the District's Food & Nutrition Services website.  Parents can also receive an application at their child's school or by visiting the Food and Nutrition Services Department located at 1050 East 10th Street in Stuart (old J.D. Parker Elementary campus).

The District has also received its Annual Economic Survey data, which shows an increase in the percentage of students qualifying for Free or Reduced Priced Meals.  The results show more than 40% of our students now qualify, an increase from approximately 38% in February 2010.

Business Partners of the Year
Congratulations to Ampersand Graphics with owners Dennis and Elaine Clark and Seacoast National Bank with Senior Vice President and Regional Manager Eileen Hatt for being selected as the District's Business Partners of the Year.  The time and energy they devote to the success of our schools is invaluable.  They will be recognized during the District's upcoming awards ceremony for Outstanding Volunteers, Mentors, and Business Partners on April 28th, at 6:30 P.M. in the Stuart Middle School Cafeteria.

In closing, thank you for all that you do each day for our students and schools.  I hope that all of our families and employees have a wonderful, restful, and safe Spring Break.

Sincerely,
Nancy Kline

Jensen Beach Elementary Music Teacher Elizabeth Jekanowski is the District's 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year!
Mrs. Jekanowski has 12 years of teaching experience, seven of those years in the Martin County School District.  She began her tenure in the District at Jensen Beach Elementary where she worked as a Varying Exceptionalities Teacher and an Intermediate ESE Teacher.  She then worked for two years at Felix A. Williams Elementary before returning to Jensen Beach Elementary as the school's music teacher, the position she currently holds.

"I am so honored to have been chosen - first by my school and colleagues, and then to represent the District," said Jekanowski. "I feel so grateful to be able to do what I do.  We are really in a  special place in Martin County and we do support the arts."

Superintendent Nancy Kline, who began her career in education as an art teacher, agrees.  "Mrs. Jekanowski is an outstanding educator who encourages and supports student learning through her love of music.  Her engaging lessons support the school's academic goals while inspiring students to develop their love of the arts."

Since being named Teacher of the Year, Jekanowski said she's been awed by the outpouring of support.  "My whole community has been abuzz.  My students are so proud.  I tell them that it is because of them and their enthusiasm for music that I received this award.  They were very happy about that!"

Prior to being named the District's 2010 Teacher of the Year, Jekanowski was selected as the District's Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Jennifer Love Gironda, the Art Teacher for Indiantown Middle, is the District's new Middle School Teacher of the Year and Tracey Benatuil was honored as the High School Teacher of the Year.

The Martin County Teacher of the Year Celebration is organized by the Education Foundation of Martin County in partnership with the Martin County Association of School Administrators.  This year's event would not have been possible without the support of the following sponsors:  Publix; The Palm Beach Post; Keiser University with support from the Crocitto and Berardinelli Families; Proctor Construction; Carol and Bob Weissman; TD Bank; J.J. Taylor; Treasure Coast Provisions; Coca-Cola; Comerica Bank; Proctor, Crook, Crowder & Fogal; Florida's Blood Centers; Law Offices of Brandt & Feinberg,

The Martin County School District is proud to announce that Michelle Muniz, a Title I Home/School Liaison for J.D. Parker School of Science, Math and Technology (JDP), is the District's 2010-2011 School-Related Employee of the Year.  The award was presented during a ceremony March 21st, at the Pirate's-Cove Resort and Marina in Stuart.

Ms. Muniz has been an employee of the District for the past eight years, including five years at JDP and three years as an educational paraprofessional for the District's Family Learning Centers.  As a Title I Home/School Liaison, Ms. Muniz translates for Hispanic parents and works to create a connection for families between school and home.  This includes encouraging parents to be active in their child's education.  She is also a member of JDP's Response to Intervention Team, which works to identify students in academic need and get them the help they need to be successful learners.   In addition, Ms. Muniz attends all literacy trainings at the school and takes on special projects, such as organizing the school's Field Day with an emphasis on parent involvement.

"Michelle Muniz is a true inspiration to the staff and students at J.D. Parker.  She completes her job of Home/School Liaison, but she goes above and beyond each day.  Her passion is helping the families at Parker.  She works tirelessly to see that families have the support they need," stated J.D. Parker Principal Mary White in her letter of recommendation for Ms. Muniz.

"Ms. Muniz is highly respected by her co-workers, both for her professionalism and her dedication to all aspects of her school's success.  She takes the initiative to find new ways for getting parents involved in their child's education and she is always willing to go the 'extra mile' to help students succeed.  She is a wonderful role model and I congratulate her for being named the District's School-Related Employee of the Year," said Superintendent Nancy Kline.

Ms. Muniz will now represent the Martin County School District in the competition to be named the 2011 Florida School-Related Employee of the Year.

Kindergarten Registration for 2011-2012 School Year Now Underway

Kindergarten Registration for the 2011-2012 school year is now underway.  Parents and guardians of children who will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2011, should register with the elementary school in their attendance zone.  Please contact the individual schools directly for details on registration times.

By registering early, parents and guardians help the schools in their planning for the correct number of classes and teachers.

Listed below are some important kindergarten registration reminders:

All medical information must be current.  Please plan ahead since physicians' offices become very busy just prior to the start of the new school year.

To register, parents and guardians will need to bring:

  • The child's original birth certificate or other lawful evidence of date of birth [F.S. 1003.21(4)].
  • Proof of residency:  utility bill in its entirety showing a local service address, a signed rental/lease agreement, or construction permits.
  • A current physical examination on Florida Department of Health Form #3040.  The physical must have been completed within one year of school entry date and signed by a licensed physician.
  • A Florida Certificate of Immunization Record (Florida Department of Health Form #680) completed by a physician or the Martin County Health Department. Please see immunization requirements below.
  • Students whose families have relocated to Martin County from another state may present proof of physical examination and immunizations on out-of-state forms signed by licensed physicians. The physical must have been completed within one year of school entry date and signed by a licensed physician.

All kindergarten students are required to have the following immunizations:

Attendance Officers Get New Help For Keeping Students in School
MCSD Attendance Officers

Coordinator of Student Services Bill Connolly with two of the District's Attendance Officers, Sara Matheny (Pictured left) and Darlene Collins (right)

The Martin County School District is committed to the important efforts of its Attendance Officers.  Attendance Officers spend their working hours on the road, visiting students and their parents at their homes and other locations, tracking and monitoring truants, as well as transporting students as required for various school-related issues.  "Attendance Officers spend the majority of their time driving and transporting students.  It is imperative that they have access to vehicles that are safe and dependable," said Superintendent Nancy Kline.

Until now, the District's Attendance Officers have relied on vehicles that were each approximately 10 years old with well over 100,000 miles.  Those vehicles included two Crown Victorias which were surplused by the Martin County Sheriff's Office and donated to the District, as well as a 1999 Ford Windstar.  However, this week, they received the keys to three new Ford Escapes.  The vehicles were purchased with capital funding and did not impact the District's Operating Budget.

"For Attendance Officers, their offices are their cars.  These new vehicles provide them with more reliable and fuel-efficient means of transportation, which ultimately will allow them to be more effective at their jobs.  When their vehicles spend less time in the shop for mechanical problems, they can spend more time working to keep our students in school," said Superintendent Nancy Kline.

As part of the District's Bring It 180 attendance campaign, the District continues to promote the importance of regular school attendance and take a proactive approach to reducing truancy.  Since being launched in 2009, the District has seen increases in attendance across elementary, middle and high school levels.   To learn more about the District's Bring It 180 attendance campaign, visit www.martinschools.org.
