New School Year Off to a
Smooth Start
Bessey Creek Elementary 1st grade teacher Ashley Jones with Superintendent Nancy Kline on the first day of school. | September 3, 2010
Dear Families and Community Members:
I would like to welcome all of our families back to school. The first two weeks have gone smoothly as students once again learned their schedules, greeted old friends and new teachers, and families got back to their normal school routines. I would like to thank our teachers, administrators and staff for their hard work in making the opening of our schools a success.
Since the start of school, I have enjoyed visiting several campuses and spending time with teachers and students in their classrooms. As a former teacher, I know first hand how much time, planning and effort is involved in welcoming students back to school. I was truly impressed by the professionalism and effort put forth by all of our teachers. I will continue visiting all of our schools on a regular basis throughout the school year.
I would also like to welcome two new principals this school year. Steve Carswell has taken on the role as principal at Spectrum Jr./Sr. High School and Hilarie Rooney joins the district as principal of Challenger. In addition, we're excited to have Joe Flanagan as the District's new Transportation Director and Lori Romano as the Director of Adult, Secondary, and Virtual Programs. They are all highly experienced, valuable additions to the Martin County School District and we look forward to working with them in their new capacities.
Once again, welcome back teachers, staff, and families and thank you for what you do each and every day on behalf of our students.
Sincerely,
Nancy Kline

District Website Getting a
New Look
Education Technology's Lucas Parker (Coordinator of Computer Operations and Technical Support) and Marilyn Gavitt (Coordinator of Instructional Technology) are overseeing the new website project. | If you have logged onto the District's website lately, you've no doubt noticed some changes. The website is being modernized...with the first phase launched at the start of the new school year. This initial phase provided a sneak peek of the new design. More significant changes that will make the site easier to navigate and increase the functionality are being implemented over the next couple of weeks. "We know that the first place many families now go for information is the Internet, and we want the District's website to be a valuable resource for the community," said Superintendent Nancy Kline.
Following the completion of the District's new website, school websites will also be getting new looks. The layouts will be similar to the final district website and provide consistency from school to school. "We consulted with school principals to get feedback on designs for the new websites. It was very important to us to not only make the new websites easy to use and easy to maintain, but to also have them reflect each school's individuality and school spirit," said Marilyn Gavitt, Coordinator of Instructional Technology.
The district will continue to update the community on the progress of the new websites! Stay tuned... |

Now Showing... New Career & Technical Education Videos!
It's real world, high tech experience. The MCSD offers a variety of Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs for high school students...and now, parents and students can log on to the Internet to explore all of the opportunities. New CTE videos highlighting each of the district's programs are available for viewing on the district website. The CTE videos, which are narrated by high school students, include an overview of all CTE programs, as well as individual videos spotlighting each of the programs available at Jensen Beach, Martin County, and South Fork High Schools. The website also includes a matrix, so parents can see at a glance the programs at each of the schools.
Students completing CTE programs can earn industry certifications - and even college credit - while still in high school. Students may also be eligible for Florida's Bright Futures Vocational Gold Seal Scholarships for college. To learn more, parents can contact their child's high school guidance counselor. |

Serving up Healthy Choices
Did you know...in the 2009-2010 school year, the Martin County School District served approximately 1.6 million lunch meals and more than 400,000 breakfasts for students!
(Pictured L-R) JoAnn Powell (Martin County High Cafeteria Manager), Vonda Moonier (Director of Food and Nutrition Services, and Yvonne Potsko (Registered Dietician) with a pizza combo meal that now includes a shaker salad, fruit cup and milk to provide students with more nutritious options. | Martin County school lunch menus are offering even more healthy choices this school year! "We're always looking for ways to improve our menu options. The food we serve must meet specific federal guidelines for nutrition. We work with our registered dietician to ensure our menu items meet or exceed these standards- but is still appealing to students' hungry appetites," said Vonda Moonier, Director of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).
Here's what's new: In elementary schools, the café cuisine line is now serving fruit and yogurt parfaits (made with fat-free yogurt and seasonal fruit), baked chicken, fruit smoothies, whole grain products, garden salads made with a romaine lettuce blend, as well as more fresh fruits and vegetables.
All combo meals at the secondary level, including pizza delivered from outside vendors, now come packed with options such as large shaker salads, jumbo fruit cups, fresh fruit, 6 oz fruit juice, fat-free milk and baked fries. To check out complete menu options, visit the FNS website. The FNS Department is also reminding parents that if they believe their family may qualify for the Free and Reduced Meals program, to please fill out an application, which is available online. Parents may also visit the FNS office, located at 1050 East 10th Street in Stuart, or contact their child's school cafeteria manager. |

Palm City Elementary Gets Ready for New Playground
Palm City Elementary PTO President Dana Janke with Principal Nancy Marin. | After more than a year of planning and fundraising, Palm City Elementary is preparing to break ground on its new playground. The new playground will replace the current "Wildcat" playground, which was built nearly 20 years ago as part of a joint school/community project. The new version will be made of entirely recycled materials. Dana Janke, president of the school's PTA, is spearheading the project along with Principal Nancy Marin.
The new playground is scheduled to be built October 27-31st. "We've had such support for this project and there is still an opportunity for everyone in our community to be involved in the rebuilding of this Palm City monument. We need volunteers, lots of them, regardless of experience, to complete this build, which is our version of a barn raising," said Janke. "It's all for the kids."

Jensen Beach High Students Create a Colorful Masterpiece
A sculpted, mosaic mural project at Stuart Beach is nearing completion, thanks to the help and creativity of Jensen Beach High School students. It's called "The Living Reef" and is part of an Art in Public places project. Students across the county submitted designs for the project, with the winning design created by a JBHS student. Students in JBHS art teacher Tracy Canada's class are now working with local artist Brenda Leigh to bring the design to life! It is expected to be completed by the end of September. A second mural project, that was also designed by a JBHS student, will begin in early Fall at Hobe Sound Beach on Bridge Road. |
