July was a busy month

Wow its August already.  As many of you know, we were traveling to exhibit at animal rights conferences for much of July, and didn't have the chance to plan many events for that month.  But we are making up for it in August, and are thrilled to invite you to come down and meet our new rescued animals - Henry and Pippin, the Nubian goats, and Penny the hen.

We will be having several visiting days and work party in August .  In addition, we are partnering with Ananta Yoga Studio in Wayne, NJ, who will be offering Community Yoga on August 15 and 29th at 10 am, in exchange for a $10 donation to for the Animals sanctuary.   Check it out here

We are looking forward to seeing and meeting everyone this visiting season.  Please read our newsletter below for more information on events and sanctuary updates.

The sanctuary is in dire need of funds so we can continue our life saving work.  Please consider making a donation to the sanctuary.  All donations go directly to caring for and rescuing animals in need.  Thank you.

July was an eventful month here at for the Animals sanctuary!  We attended the Animal Rights National Conference from July 15 - 19th and Taking Action For Animals conference July 24-25, in Washington, D.C. .  We came back re-energized and excited to continue our lifesaving work here at the sanctuary.  But as many of you know, the world of animal rescue never stops. There are always more animals who desperately need our help, for whom the choice is between coming to a sanctuary like for the Animals sanctuary or going to slaughter.  Although we don't have much space, we always do our best to accommodate new animals, to save them from a certain death.

The first rescues we took in, who came to us on August 1, 2010, were Henry and Pippin, two beautiful male Nubian goats. Henry and Pippin were companion goats for a local woman, who had to sell her home for 40 years after her husband passed away.  She was desperately seeking a new home for them, as she couldn't care for them any longer.  Deb went out to meet the goats and help her trim their hoofs and give them some basic care.  On that trip, she fell in love with them and decided to take them in.  On Sunday August 1, Henry and Pippin came to for the Animals sanctuary and started the process of integrating.  We had a work party, and 15 amazing volunteers were on hand to watch them meet Hannah and her sisters.

Henry and Pippin are beautiful goats.  Pippin is very tall, black and has a long goatee and an underbite.  Henry is more like the girls but is black. Henry loves people, while Pippin is a little shyer.   After we gave them the afternoon to just get used to the barn and explore a bit, we introduced them to Hannah and her sisters.  As goats do, Lizzy, the leader of the girl goats, investigated and she and Pippin did some head-bumping to get acquainted, while the other sisters happily ate hay and ignored the boys and gave them friendly sniffs. After a little bumping, we are happy to report that Henry and Pippin are now integrated into our flock of goats, and enjoying their new home!

Our final rescue of the weekend was Penny the Hen, a gorgeous coppery chicken found on Garret Mountain Reservation in Passaic County.  Apparently Garrett Mountain is a site where people practice Santeria sacrifices, and the woman who found Penny likely saved this little chicken's life, after she escaped a sacrifice.

Penny quickly found her footing with Abbie and Elaine, our two chickens here at for the Animals sanctuary, and is now happily clucking around the coop and the barn, and nibbling on delicious morsels of food.  We're looking forward to watching her grow and become healthier now that she is in a safe home.

Visiting days

Want some cow kisses, goat rubs, chicken kisses and mud kisses from pigs.  Come on out to our visiting day at for the Animals sanctuary.  Bring a Vegan lunch and a blanket to sit on and enjoy our beautiful sanctuary grounds.

We are particularly excited for two of our visiting days.  The first is August 14, which will be a picnic potluck day - where we invite you to bring a vegan dish to share with others when you come, so that we can all share a community meal outdoors, watching our animal friends in the pasture.

We look forward to seeing you there!  We are also very excited to welcome the Montclair Vegans meetup group who will be coming to for the Animal sanctuary.  The animals always love meeting new friends!  Please see the Montclair Vegans website  for  more details
