Stem-Cell Therapy for your Pets
Dr. King has recently completed clinical training to perform regenerative stem cell implantation therapy for dogs and cats. He is now certified to perform the procedure after successfully performing five stem cell implantation procedures in canine patients at Lakewood Animal Hospital. The training was conducted under the direction of Dr. Bob Harmon the founder of San Diego based biotechnology laboratory Vet Stem Inc. and Dr. Timothy McCarthy, a board certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon from Beaverton, Oregon.
Regenerative stem cell therapy involves the collection and re-implantation of stem cells from the patient's own body to promote tissue healing. Fat tissues are collected from the patient. Autologous fat derived stem cells and growth factors are then processed and concentrated from these fat tissues. Sterile specimens of the stem cells are then injected into arthritic joints of the patient and as a single intravenous injection. These specialized function cells and proteins stimulate and rejuvenate inflamed connective tissues and joint surface cells. The stem cell and growth factor injections have been shown to produce clinical improvement in pain level, lameness and range of motion in up to 80% of treated patients.
The procedure will be of great benefit to patient's that are intolerant of or poorly responsive to the standard non-steroidal therapy drugs (ex aspirin, Rimadyl) and pain relievers (ex tramadol, opiates).
