Committee & Council Updates
Remodelers Council Fernando Arriola, 2010 Chair
Next Meeting: Wednesday, March 3 @ 4pm Omni Royal Orleans, 621 St. Louis Street, N.O. EPA Lead Paint Round-Table Discussion
The Remodelers Council distributed the 2009-2010 Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report - an invaluable guide for contractors when it comes to bidding remodeling jobs - at our February Meeting. Our March 3rd meeting will be open to any HBA member wishing to learn about or
discuss the implications of the EPA's "Lead: Renovation, Repair, and
Painting" Rule.
This rule, going into effect April 22, 2010, will greatly impact many
of our members, and we want to ensure everyone is prepared!
Crescent City Green Council Toni Wendel, 2010 Chair
Next Meeting: Thursday, February 18th @ 12pm HBA Office, 2424 N. Arnoult Road, Metairie
We had a very successful meeting on green marketing strategies on February 18. We heard from Energy Raters Diane Baum and Jeff Haag about the benefits and ultimate cost-saving features of various green products and services, as well as ways builders can use this information to help market green home features. We also heard from Chris Jourdan, a local appraiser, about his positive experience with valuing green homes at top market values. We would like to extend a huge thanks to our sponsor, Jeff Haag with Envirogreen Insulation. We are looking forward to participating in the "Emerald City" at this year's New Orleans Home & Garden Show, where we will partner with Entergy New Orleans, LSU AgCenter, and the LA Department of Natural Resources to provide information to the public regarding green building and available local, state, and federal incentive programs. Our next meeting will be held Thursday, March 18 at 12pm. Please contact Alex if you would like to sponsor.
Multifamily Council Peter Young, 2010 Chair
Next Meeting: Thursday, April 8 Time & Location TBD
The MFC has been continuing to roll out its 2010 strategic plan which includes a healthy menu of education classes for property managers, leasing consultants & maintenance staff, as well as informational seminars for our associate members. We plan to have at least t 2-4 classes per month throughout the year. Additionally, we have planned for expansion in membership and are reaching out to the North Shore Property Managers and staff to bring them education and social events this year. We launched this effort with a Wine and Cheese Social event at Chenier in Mandeville, John Arms property, which was a great success and a good time had by all. We'll also be holding our first North Shore education class at Chenier on March 16th; the class will be on Fair Housing.
This has been a very active first quarter for us and we plan for more of the same to follow. If you are interested in getting involved please join us at our next meeting on April 8th at Café East in Metairie. We will have an Larry Schedler speaking at this event, so it will be a great way to really get a feel for what the Multifamily industry is about directly from an expert in the field. Visit the Multifamily Council Homepage for more details.
Associates Council Mike LeCorgne, 2010 Chair
Next Meeting: Wednesday, March 3rd @ 8:30 HBA Office
We had such a great turnout at our MARDI GRAS breakfast last month that we anticipate the same, if not more, than the 30+ attendees from last month! We encourage those who attended to bring at least one Associate (or potential Associate member) to the March 3rd meeting. Beginning this month, the Associates Council meetings will be combined with the Membership Committee. As these two aspects of the Association go hand-in-hand, we look forward to this collaboration.
EVENTS: Crawfish Boil: April 15 @ 6pm, Ferguson Plumbing Warehouse (901 S. Labarre, Metairie) Wess Wyman Memorial Fishing Rodeo: July 8-10 Kick-A$$ Cook Off: Date & Location TBD Fall Golf Tournament: Date & Location TBD
Legislative Committee Anthony Licciardi, 2010 Chair
The New Orleans City Council and Mayoral Elections were held February 6, 2010.
We are happy to announce that several of the candidates endorsed by the HBA,
including Arnie Fielkow, Jackie Clarkson, Stacy Head, and Cynthia Hedge-Morrell
won outright the races for the at-large seats and their individual districts,
respectively. Additionally, both Jay Batt in District A and Austin Badon in
District E made the runoffs for their areas. We encourage all of our members
living in Districts A and E in Orleans Parish to VOTE on March 6th to ensure
their successful elections. On March 10, we will be holding Kenner Mayoral
candidate interviews; both Phil Capitano and Mike Yenni have agreed to
participate. We will be sure to announce our endorsement if there is one, and we
will also be carefully monitoring the St. John the Baptist Parish Presidential
election, which will also take place March 27, for runoff information.
