The Mortgage Monitor

March 2012

Michelle BrienzaWinter is officially over!  The "winter that wasn't" may have
jump-started traditional spring real estate activity. Recently
released re-sale figures for February show an 8.6% increase over February, 2011. Were buyers getting their spring jackets out and looking earlier?  We'll know the answer in the next few months as we approach summer.

On April 17th, I'll be co-hosting a free information seminar on how to start investing in real estate. If this is something you've ever considered, I urge you to come out!

The mortgage pricing wars are raging on with some of the banks locked in a very public advertising battle about the relative merits of their respective 2.99% fixed rate offerings.   Meanwhile, the Bank of Canada and some economists continue to express concern with rising household debt levels. We live in interesting times.  Remember, "all that glitters is not always gold" when it comes to mortgage rates - read the fine print or call me for a consultation.

Last month I featured an article about how Toronto's streets got their names, this month I have an article about Toronto's lost street names.

Spring officially starts today.  Persians celebrate their New Year on the first day of spring.  Wishing the Persian community a Nowruz Mobaarak.

Why the latest mortgage war was months in the making

MB Digital Communications

Before it waded back into the market with deeply discounted mortgage rates last week, Bank of Montreal sought to give policy makers in Ottawa a heads-up that it was about to shake up the housing market again.

The bank had also spent months amassing a stockpile of cheap funding in the bond market to backstop the discounted mortgages, a strategy designed to ensure the cut-rate loans would not lose the bank money.

The lost street names of Toronto

Earlier this week we saw how Google Maps is helping chart Toronto's forgotten laneways, paths and trails to make for a more comprehensive map of the city, potentially at the loss of a little mystery. Despite the current map being extremely detailed, it turns out there are still plenty of gaps.

House of the Week: $2 million for a custom Etobicoke home with a staircase inspired by the Guggenheim

Toronto Life's recent home of the week is a showplace on Eastglen Crescent.

They highlight the kitchen: "With top-of-the-line Bosch appliances, quartz countertops, Indonesian Macassar ebony cabinets and high-gloss shelves (hand polished by a piano polisher), the modern kitchen has all the bells and whistles while still managing to remain inviting."

I know the person who did the kitchen - it's gorgeous!
