New Research: Losing Weight Decreases Cancer Risk

As more individuals are becoming overweight and obese in this country, more research is being done on the consequences of the expanding waistlines in America.  For those of us who have personally struggled with weight issues at some point in our lives, we know that shedding pounds can help tremendously in how we look, how we feel, and how we feel about ourselves.  In addition to these motivating factors, researchers are now revealing many more reasons why losing weight is such an important thing to do.

Cancer Added To Growing List of Complications Resulting From Obesity

Over recent years studies have shown that being overweight (BMI between 25-30) or obese (BMI over 30) can significantly increase the risk for developing the following conditions: diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, sleep apnea, asthma, arthritis, gallstones, gout, high cholesterol and triglycerides, heartburn, and gynecological problems (such as fibroids and infertility).  On this list is included the number one cause of death for Americans: cardiovascular disease.  Now we know that the number two cause of death for Americans, cancer, can be added to the list.  In fact, obesity can 100,000 cases of cancer per year in America can be linked to obesity increase the risk of developing several different types of cancer.  In females, cancers of the cervix, ovaries, uterus, and breasts are significantly more common in obese individuals and in males both breast and prostate cancers are more common.  In both sexes, colon, esophageal, and pancreatic cancers develop at a higher rate in the obese.  In addition, all of these types of cancers tend to be more aggressive in obese individuals when they do develop.  Women gaining more than 20 pounds from age 18 to midlife double their risk of post-menopausal breast cancer, compared to women whose weight remains stable.  At present, there are and this number will continue to grow as studies have shown that nearly one-third of people living in this country are overweight, 26% are considered obese, and our children are becoming overweight and obese at an alarming rate.

"A Silver Lining"

As stark as these numbers are, the research has also revealed a silver lining.  People who lose weight, even as little as 10% of their total body weightPeople who lose weight, even as little as 10% of their total body weight, can significantly reduce their risk for developing cancer, can significantly reduce their risk for developing cancer.  Moreover, individuals who are able to achieve "healthy" weight status (BMI between 19-25) can prevent between one-quarter to one-third of all types of cancer.  The numbers are even more impressive for certain types of cancer: up to one-half of uterine and endometrial cancer could be prevented if healthier weights could be achieved.

Why It Seems So Difficult

Even with these health statistics known, there are no easy answers.  Emotional suffering may be one of the most painful parts of obesity. American society emphasizes physical appearance and often equates attractiveness with slimness, especially for women. Such messages make overweight people feel unattractive.  One obesity study asked severely obese persons to take a forced-choice questionnaire. That means, they had to make a choice between being at their present weight or having some other given illness. The results were astounding. Although there were some variations, every obese person said that they would rather be blind or have one leg amputated than be at their present heavy weight. Most interestingly, every person would rather be a poor thin person than be a morbidly obese millionaire.  Most obese individuals feel like nothing can be done to change their futures.  Science says otherwise.  People who want to lose weight, can.
