Superintendent

Greetings:

DASD is a large district but we care deeply about each one of our students. On Wednesday evening we learned that one of our students at the Stem Academy had passed away. Speaking for everyone across the district, our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the family. I would like to commend Mrs. Tina Forsythe and the staff members involved in the district's Student Assistance Services group. These caring individuals are trained in grief counseling and were on hand at the STEM Academy, Lionville Middle School and DHS East on Thursday. Support services will also be available next week in these schools.   Please know that our school counselors are also on hand to advise and assist any child who is having trouble coping with their grief and this loss.

Employee Wellness

Employee wellness programs are an investment in our district's most valuable resource, our employees. Research has shown that workers are more likely to come to work and perform well when they are in optimal physical and psychological health. Employee wellness programs improves company productivity by:

  • Attracting better employees;
  • Reducing the rate of absenteeism and time lost;
  • Enhancing on-the-job performance and decision making;
  • Improving staff morale, which leads to a reduction in turnover

A few short years ago, some of our staff formed the Health and Wellness committee to promote a healthier life style for our DASD employees.   This group has held a health and wellness fair for the staff, created an annual "walk during lunch" day, scheduled blood pressure and BMI screenings, arranged for yearly flu shot opportunities and sends out a bi-weekly health and wellness message to our staff.

Yesterday, we learned that this group had won the Gold Award in the annual School Employee Wellness Award Program.   The district will earn a $1000 grant to use for school employee wellness and a banner recognizing this great achievement.

Congratulations to our Human Resource department and the staff involved in this Health and Wellness initiative.

Norwin STEM Summit

Nearly 350 educators and business leaders from Westmoreland and Allegheny counties attended one of the first regional STEM Education summits in Westmoreland County Monday, March 12, 2012 at Norwin High School.

Hosted by Norwin School District, with Excela Health serving as a Gold Sponsor, the event brought together southwestern Pennsylvania educators and STEM experts to explore new ways to prepare students to be globally competitive in a future where science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills will be in demand.

STEM Academy Headmaster George Fiore and I were invited to speak at the conference.   Click here to view some of the photos from the STEM summit.

DASD Teachers Invited to China
tang
As mentioned in an earlier issue of the D-Link, DASD has entered into a partnership with elementary, middle and high schools in the capital city of Hebei, China.    DASD teachers have been invited to visit the province and teach English to students from July 22 - August 12, 2012.   The trip will be funded by the government of Heibei.

The teachers will join groups from the Kennett and Lehigh school districts.  The purpose of the trip is to show Chinese teachers the "American" way of teaching children to succeed in the 21st Century.   Chinese schools currently have a student-teacher ratio of 60 -1 with rows of desks and a teacher lecturer.   The Chinese have recognized that students need a more hands-on approach to learning and have invited professionals from the United States and Great Britan to share their skills.

DASD teachers have been invited to submit resumes and voice recordings to Director Eddy Tang.  Mr. Tang is the Chinese government's representative who is working with Dr. Lawrence Mussoline to create this partnership.   In the future, teachers from Heibei will travel to the United States to spend time in Dowingtown schools.
2nd Annual Duck Race

DuckThose little yellow ducks have been hibernating, but they are ready to race down the Brandywine Creek once again.

The Downingtown Community Education Foundation is hosting the 2nd Annual Duck Race and Community Picnic on May 6, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Kerr Park Gazebo field.   Prizes include:  1st Place - $500, 2nd Place - $250, 3rd Place -  $125, 4th Place - $50 Doghouse Gift Certificate.  Ducks can be purchased singly or in a "quack pack" (5 for $20.00).

The event is being sponsored by DNB Bank, Rosie and Joe Nicholas and the Doghouse Gourmet Burgers.   Doghouse will have food for sale during the event.  (Additional sponsors welcomed)

Thanks to the 2011 Duck Race, several teacher grants were funded this year.  Money raised in the race funded proposals to use EBooks to promote excellence at LMS, enhanced learning through the use of IPADS at Shamona Creek and for the creation of an underground green house for East and West. This project will explore the growth rate of vegetables with and without carbon monoxide manipulation, the acceptable toxic level for human consumption, the impact of fiber optic lighting and activities involving the waste management system..

All funds received from the "adoption" of this years flock of ducks will benefit the teachers and students in our 15 schools.

School Board Accepts RFP for a Long Range Facilities Master Plan

On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 the Board of Directors accepted a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a Long Range Facilities Master Plan (LRFMP).    The LRFMP will be a five-year facilities planning model that has the capability of being expandable, adaptable and flexible to meet the needs of a growing school district. The project will start in Spring 2012 and conclude in the Spring of 2013. The purpose of the plan will be to allow the District to adjust the existing zone boundaries and feeder patterns to optimize the utilization of the facilities. The goal is to adopt a plan before the opening of the 6th grade center in 2014.

The project will include demographic analysis and reports, school zone boundary scenarios and reports, maps and written descriptions, meetings and community engagement, the presentation of boundary plan options to the Board at three meetings throughout the length of the project, and community outreach.

This RFP will be advertised once the recommendations made by the Board at Wednesday's meeting are included.  The Board hopes to approve the winning proposal in May, 2012.  Progress, timelines, and other important information will be posted on the district's website with updates included in each issue of The D-Link.

Curriculum Council Videos Available

The Board's Curriculum Committee now meets with the District's Curriculum Council.   These meetings give board members and staff the opportunity to meet and discuss some of the new initiatives and educational improvements in the K-12 curriculum.    These meetings are also being videotaped for those who cannot make the meeting but wish to stay current on these important changes.

Beaver Creek
Ten students represented Beaver Creek at the Chester County Science Research Competition. We are so proud of Andrew Gkonos who won high honors in his category. Also being recognized for their science skills and receiving honors were Eric Hallahan, Anoushka Parnerkar, Kameela Graves, and Maggie Kelly. Way to go scientists!

3rd, 4th and 5th graders have been busying taking reading and math PSSAs this past week. Assessments will continue next week. The whole school is supporting them by earning tickets, for following directions, using strategies, and doing their best, to watch a reward movie later this spring after writing and science PSSAs are over.

2nd trimester is over and teachers used Friday to upload grades for ESAR distribution. Last week, grade levels shared the results of their reading and math goals for the trimester. Math goals focused on fact fluency and 5th grade focused on answering open ended questions. Third trimester goals will be selected in the next few weeks so students can be targeted to receive interventions for the remainder of this school year.

As a wellness initiative, we celebrated "Go for the Greens" by having students wear green on Thursday and bring in healthy green snacks to eat. Here are some eager first graders showing off their "green" and healthy snacks.

Brandywine Wallace

BW fourth grader, Ian Wilmerton, won the Richard & Patti Smith Spirit of Engineering Award at the Chester County Science Research Fair last week. Ian's project was "Rocking the Boat".

In addition, fifth grader, Keegan Borig, received Honors for his "I Forget the Title!" project in the Behavioral and Social Science category. Congratulations to all BW participants!

BW completed four days of PSSA Reading and Mathematics testing this week. Students worked hard to answer questions completely and accurately. The entire staff worked together to provide recess coverage, hall duty, and small group accomodations in a true BW team effort!!

BW welcomed Mrs. Jaime Mehler to our school this week for a tour and visit to some classrooms. Mrs. Mehler is our Adopted Board Member and we look forward to including her in our spring activities.

Our first graders were the grade level that collected the most donations for our recent Jump Rope for Heart. Because of their hard work, the first grade earned an extra recess for their efforts in raising $1522.85. The beautiful weather this week was perfect for their reward.

Springton Manor Teacher Honored: At the monthly meeting of the Downingtown Area School District Board of School Directors Mrs. Jane Przyuski, Intermediate Grades Instructional Support Teacher, was recognized for her dedication to helping all our Springton Manor Mustangs (students and staff) experience academic growth and find success with learning. One of Mrs. Przyuski's colleagues wrote, "You have helped me grow as an educator and a person, and have helped me focus my lens in a manner that has imporved my instruction. Your enthusiasm has greatly motivated me to constantly ask questions and talk and refocus, so that I am concentrated on what's meaningful and what is most important and beneficial to my learners." Congratulations, Mrs. Przyuski, on this much deserved recognition and thank you for your support and leadership for every Mustang!

Uwchlan Hills

By 4th grade student reporter, Kayla

On the day of Jump Rope for Heart there were stations for students to participate in. Parents counted the money each grade donated, while students jumped. When I arrived in the morning I gave my slip with all my donated money in it to my teacher,  Mrs. Dankanich,  which later got collected by another teacher to bring down to the gym . When our special time came, I couldn't wait! All of the stations had to do with jump roping. At the end I was tired, but I will never regret doing all that work. Our school raised over $26,000! My good friend Caroline said, "Jump Rope for Heart is one of my favorite school activities." She also said, "Every penny counts toward saving a life." I know I had fun doing this fundraiser!

West Bradford

PSSA Testing.  PSSA testing is well under way and WB students are working hard to ROCK the test (ROCK...an acronym for doing their best:  Re-take the test, Only do your best, Check your work and Keep calm).  Looks, sounds and even smells like hard work at WB! (a good smell!)

Phillie Phanatic

Many of our WB classrooms participate in the Phanatic About Reading incentive sponsored by the Philadelphia Phillies to encourage students to read outside of the school day.  Barb Wakefield's second grade, because of their stellar reading habits, WON a visit from the Phillie Phanatic!  The phun of it was...until the kids saw the Phanatic's big feet behind the screen at the all-school assembly on February 24, they didn't know they were a winning class!  The Phanatic surprised and delighted the school with his lovable antics as Dr. Wert read his latest book about his trip to the Galapagos Islands highlighting the importance of being unique.  The Phanatic's surprise assembly was a hit...and Dr. Wert is now a Phillies Phan

Faculty meeting.  Staff reviewed procedures for the variety of emergency drills that could be called during a school day.  We look forward to continuing to practice and streamline our plans.

Robots in First Grade

First grade students at West Bradford took part in a robot making project to go along with a science fiction story "My Robot" which they read in Reading.  Each student used their creativity and materials of their choice to design and build their robot.  All students brought in their robots on Friday March 9th and took turns visiting the other first grade classes to see the robot creations of their friends.

Dr. Seuss Night.  Last Friday night, over 600 students, families, and staff took part in a night to celebrate the fun of Dr. Seuss.  There were over 20 rooms filled with over 40 activities for kids and their families to participate in!  Crafts, board games, movement and music activities, obstacle courses, photo ops, and even therapy dogs to read to!  Dr. Mussoline manned a game of athletic skill, Mr. Ost-Prisco oversaw the activities in the cafe, Mrs. Fenn was assigned to a plethora of gym activities and Ms Mehler was an engaging guest reader!  A wonderful opportunity for our WB families and friends!
