FromtheCEOFROM THE CEO

What Defines an Entrepreneur?

When people hear the word 'entrepreneur', they have many different reactions. One I've heard recently from a CEO of a well-established medium-sized company (a company with 20 employees and $1 million in annual revenue) was that he was 'not an entrepreneur'. He referred to himself as a 'CEO', a 'manager', a 'businessman' (and, yes, in some cases, women CEOs have responded just as aversely). These individuals don't want to be called 'entrepreneurs' because as the one who-does-not-want-to-be-called-an-entrepreneur told me, 'that's a hacker, a kid who sits in his bedroom all day, writing code, eating microwave noodles.'

Yes, the word 'entrepreneur' has developed a stereotype over the past few years, but CEOs and/or founders of small-to-medium sized companies who get out of their pajamas, go to an office and make tough decisions all day are most definitely entrepreneurs. Consider, for a moment, this definition of an 'entrepreneur', one published last week in a story in Inc. magazine:

Entrepreneurship is the pursuit of opportunity without regard to resources currently controlled.

Does that sound like you? What about this?

Every time you want to make any important decision, there are two possible courses of action. You can look at the array of choices that present themselves, pick the best available option and try to make it fit. Or, you can do what the true entrepreneur does: Figure out the best conceivable option and then make it available.

The timing of Inc.'s publication of this piece, which borrows the first definition from one that was coined 37 years ago by Harvard Business School professor Howard Stevenson and the second from a 1983 textbook, perfectly coincides with our first webinar of 2012.
The New Entrepreneur: New Rules for the New Era of Innovation and Entrepreneurship will be delivered by Silicon Valley VC Bill Reichert, Managing Director of Garage Technology Ventures on February 16 (February 17 in Australia, New Zealand and Asia).
