September 2009

Greetings!

There is an old African proverb that says:

'If you want to walk fast, walk alone; if you want to walk far, walk with others."

Thank you for helping the villagers of Kager to "walk far" in their community transformation.

Uniforms and Shoes for Kager Orphans

On September 7, the Jubilee Village Project had the pleasure of distributing new school uniforms and leather shoes to 23 orphans in Kager village as part of our Education sector efforts.  Uniforms are the official attire for schools and colleges in Kenya and provide a sense of pride and identity to each student.  Many of the orphans of Kager lack uniforms which sometimes precludes them from being able to attend school. Some have very worn and torn out school uniforms, which can lead to ridicule and bullying by other students.

God Kado UniformsAndrew Aduda, Education Champion, helped develop the program for the uniforms and shoes for the ophan children (about $25 each) and worked with the headmasters of the four schools in Kager village to identify the uniform recipients.  School children and their parents came to the JVP Community Resource Center and received their new uniforms in an official program.  This is what Andrew has to share about the program:

"The transformation as a result of the uniform and shoes provision may not be fast tracked, but will be slowly realized. There are good brains among the little children in Kager village, and I believe as a community, we should be proud of these young brains. We should nurture them well and allow them to grow with the right ambition, attitude and love for their village. Their input in the future of this village, depends so much on how they are brought up. I believe JVP showing such a love to this vulnerable group of children in Kager will stir the hope of some of them, and make them pursue their education with vigor, knowing that they are not alone, but God knows their faith. "

jvp banner1The plight and suffering of orphans in Africa is real.  In a community where families often do not have enough food to feed their own children, adding another mouth to feed is hardly imaginable.  The scourge of HIV/AIDS is leaving a dark and deep scar in millions of children in Africa as they lose one or both parents to this pandemic disease, and they are left behind to be raised by a single parent, grandparent, relative, foster family or an orphanage.

As with all of the Jubilee Village Project's programs, our goal is not to build dependency on an outside agency, but rather to encourage, equip empower the family unit and the community to achieve their own transformation.  To help address the growing orphan crisis in Africa, JVP's strategy is to come alongside families that take in orphans and help them develop the means to do this through our other JVP initiatives.

We were also excited to see that many of the uniforms were made by Jane Anyango, the seamstress in Kager village who was the first recipient of Kijiji Benki microloan.

In James 1:27 the Word says "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."  It is our prayer that these new uniforms and shoes will bless the orphans of Kager village and encourage them to do the very best students they can be, as well as encourage those that are raising them.
Village Electrification One Step Closer

The following is a brief update from David Kayando, Lead Champion, on the progress of bringing electricity to Kager village:

The work of building electricity for Kager is going on well and very impressive.  The building of the electricity lines is up, and we are just waiting for the transformer to be mounted.  The villagers were involved in digging the deep holes for the poles to stand in (see picture below).  We have also wired the power come to JVP Community Resource Centre and have done a connection to the Medical Dispensary.

Digging HolesThe Champions have taken challenge of publicing the village on the need to begin applying for electricity in their homes. We also saw the need that some people may not be able to get this to their homes due to cost, but all agreed to let the people take charge and try to have this done.

We have some forms already with us, which families in Kager who are interested in having electricity will apply. The official information is that anyone within the radius of 600m will be able to use the power from the transformer.

The main thrust of the village electrification project is to bring about the development of the community through better healthcare, improved education and the introduction of light industry.  The villagers are involved in the digging of holes (see above), installing of poles and hanging wire.  We hope that in the next month, the three phase transformer will be installed and the first lights will be turned on in the village we love.
2nd Kijiji Benki Microloan Made

The Kijiji Benki (Village Bank) microloan program has made its second loan to Jane Anyango.  Jane will use her small loan of $100 to expand her seamstress and tailoring business that she operates out of her home.

Jane AnyangoWorking with Carolyne Kayando, Economic Development Champion, Jane developed and submitted a small business plan outlining how these funds will be used (primarily for the purchase of materials and supplies) and an outline of how she will repay this loan in the next year.  It is her hope that with this $100, she will be able to both repay the loan and make a small profit of $50-75.

David K is pleased to report:

"During the discussions on the provision of uniforms to the orphans and the vulnerable children in Kager, Jane and another lady who is also a dressmaker from Kager were picked to make the uniforms for the girls.  David Kayando What does that mean to us as JVP? It means we are up to improve the living conditions for the villagers, by creating work for them in their areas of expertise and as they work they earn, so employment is created and poverty reduced."

Through small investments like this, Jubilee Village Project is encouraging, equipping and empowering villagers in their own family and community transformation.  If you are interested in giving directly to support the Kijiji Benki program through a $100, $200 or $300 contribution, click here.
