Pens, paper, and immunizations

Back-to-school season is here!

Getting children all of the vaccines recommended by the Center for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics is one of the most important things parents can do to protect their children's health -- and that of classmates and the community. Most schools require children to be current on vaccinations before enrolling to protect the health of all students.

For the 2012-2013 school year, all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization  (called "Tdap") for school in the fall. This new school immunization law affects all students in public and private schools.

Caduceus4Kids, our pediatrics office in Yorba Linda, will hold a vaccine clinic Monday, August 27th,  from 6pm-7:30pm.  No appointments are offered for the clinic; we will administer the vaccinations on a walk-in basis. All vaccinations will be available, and we are offering MCV (Meningococcal vaccinations) at a discounted cash price of $139 during the clinic only.  Contact the Member Services department of your health plan to find out which (if any) vaccinations are covered; we offer cash price discounts for all services not covered by your health plan.

Today's childhood vaccines protect against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, including polio, measles, whooping cough and chickenpox.  Unsure of what you need? Here's a short guide:

  • Kids who are four to six years old are due for boosters of four vaccines: DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis), chickenpox, MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and polio.
  • Older children, like pre-teens and teens, need Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis), HPV  (human papillomavirus) and MCV (meningococcal conjugate virus) vaccines.
  • Yearly flu vaccines are recommended for all children six months and older.
  • Adolescents 11 - 16 years of age need an MCV (meningococcal) booster.
  • College-age persons and those entering the military need an MCV vaccination.
Insurance When You're Sick or Injured
Did you know that anyone in California with a pre-existing health condition (from a ruptured disc to cancer) can obtain PPO-based health insurance? In fact, ONLY people WITH pre existing conditions qualify.  The Pre Existing Insurance Program (PCIP) offers reasonable monthly premiums, an extensive menu of benefits, and a very large physician/hospital PPO network for those who would otherwise be refused health insurance and struggle to get care.

To qualify:
 - you must be a U.S. citizen (proof is required)
 - you must have been without ANY insurance for six (6) months (this     includes Medi Cal, Healthy Families, IMS); and
 - you must have a pre existing condition.

Do you know of someone who would benefit from this program?
Please click here to visit the PCIP website.

All of the Caduceus physicians and on-site services are in-network for PCIP.

Lactation Consults at Caduceus for Women

We offer the support soon-to-be-mothers need to be successful at breastfeeding with the B.A.B.E. program: Baby Assessment Breastfeeding Evaluation.  Medical science has established that breastfeeding your infant provides the strongest immune system for your child; consider this service as the best way to prepare yourself for successfully giving those benefits to your child.

Mary DeNicola, Nurse Practitioner, and B.A.B.E. lactation consultant, adds, "Mother's milk provides perfect nutrition, and medicine with every feeding.  It's the right price (free), always the right temperature, and on tap, readily available."

"Breastfeeding has benefits for both moms and babies," said DeNicola. "Breastfed babies have a lower incidence of almost every childhood disease; breastfeeding moms lose pregnancy weight faster, and have less premenopausal ductal breast cancer.  We offer the B.A.B.E program because sometimes babies and moms need help with latch-on or milk supply."

Lactation services are now a covered insurance benefit for nearly all insurance plans.

If you have questions about the service, please use this link to contact our Concierge Services team who will respond to you promptly and in private.

What's a Credo?

Clinical medical image
A credo is a doctrine or a pledge adopted by a person or a company. For us, it's our written commitment to you, found in our offices and on our website. In, fact, we have 10 of them.

We're going to review one credo in each monthly newsletter, and we welcome your comments.

One of credos addresses a number of the news stories you've seen about physicians accepting money to endorse pharmaceutical products or medical devices. Unfortunately, it's not just pharmacies that attempt to give physicians money or services in exchange for endorsements: hospitals and HMO groups do the same.  It's a troubling trend, and taints the judgment of the physician providing your care. Here's our credo on that subject:

We accept no financial subsidies from potential conflict-of-interest sources such as a hospital, HMO or pharmaceutical company.

And we never will.

Sincerely,

Gregg DeNicola MD
