Caduceus Specialist Nationally Recognized

Congratulations to our orthopaedic surgeon, Leslie Shokes MD,  recently recognized as a 2011 Patients' Choice physician. Each month, more than 200,000 patients across the US provide online feedback about their doctor experiences. They rate various components of the care they receive, such as bedside manner, doctor-patient face time, follow up care, ease of appointment setting and courtesy of office staff.  Those having received consistent high praise and near-perfect scores are noted with distinction, and Shokes was granted this national recognition.  We are proud to have Dr. Shokes on our team!  If you would like to reserve an appointment with Dr. Shokes, click here.

 OR

SHIZNICK?

Our mascot Samme the Snake is never wrong-- and he can prove it!
Samme likes to have a little fun with our readers, so he has selected a true case from the archives of Caduceus medical files to share. He changed a few "FACTS" to protect the innocent.  Or did he??

He may have made up the whole thing up to trick you, which we like to call  "SHIZNICK."

The answer will appear at the end of this newsletter.

The Sad Sack Senior
Kenneth is a 73-year old gentleman who has been quite sad for the past ten years. He began to feel that way when he and his wife moved to a high-rise condo in the Gas Lamp area of San Diego.  The reason for the move was so he  and his wife could enjoy the nightlife and restaurants in the area without being burdened by the housework and yard work of the two-story house.

When Kenneth experienced a loss of appetite,  started to lose weight, and   became tearful on several occasions, his wife took him to the family doctor.  The diagnosis of major depression was made and the explanation was attributed to adjustment to life as a senior citizen.  Although Kenneth did not dispute the diagnosis, he felt any treatment would be hopeless because it was just part of his personality.

Kenneth's family doctor gave him Zoloft, Lexapro, and Wellbutrin.  None of the medications seemed to be effective or caused substantial side effects. The family doctor then referred Kenneth to a psychiatrist to explore alternate anti-depressants, none of which Kenneth tolerated well.  Feeling hopeless, Kenneth sat in his condominium all day staring out the window and refusing to leave his home.

One day, Kenneth's 16-year old grandson brought a strobe light over during a Sunday visit with the family for some fun.  The teen darkened the room that Kenneth was in and played the strobe light continuously for three hours.  He showed Kenneth how to use the strobe light and offered to let him keep it in the room. He told his grandfather to use the strobe light as often as he would like because "it's kinda cool."

After three weeks, Kenneth noticed he was feeling much happier.  He wanted to go out and have a drink at the Irish pub.  He also wanted to stroll at the Seaport Village and shop for the wife's birthday present at Horton Plaza.  In fact, the more Kenneth used the strobe light, the happier he became.  His family noticed his mood elevation and asked him what he had done to improve it.  Kenneth said,
"I give all the credit to my grandson.  The strobe light works when all the medicines failed.  I am going to sit in the dark room with the strobe light for three hours a day for the rest of my life."

FACT or SHIZNICK?

Did Kenneth feel better by using the strobe light for his depression?

Now for the answer to our "Fact or Shiznick" Quiz:

SHIZNICK!  Although strobe lights have not been shown to assist in the treatment of depression, "Bright Light Therapy" has been shown effective, even when medications fail.

Samme Sez...  Kenneth's grandson may want to replace the strobe with a huge lamp!
