Our mascot Samme the Snake is never wrong and he can prove it!
Samme asked the editor if he could have a little fun with our readers.
For this game, Samme selects a true case from the archives of Caduceus. Samme changes a few "FACT"s to protect the innocent.
Or did he??
He may have made up the whole thing up to trick you, which we like to call "SHIZNICK."
The answer will appear at the end of this newsletter in the the Medical Director's message to our patients.
The Case of the Kidney Stone, Chat Room, and Atkins Diet-
Jeff is 41 years old and weighs 250 lbs. He has just returned home after his third trip to the emergency room this year for treatment of his kidney stones. His dad had the same problem. Jeff's doctor tells Jeff that both he and his father have uric acid stones, which is probably hereditary. He explained to Jeff that this is also the contributing factor to his multiple attacks of gout over his lifetime.
Jeff enters the "Gout Over 30" internet chat room and realizes that most men with gout and high uric acid levels have very poor eating patterns and were quite overweight. Jeff was sure that if he were to lose some weight, his kidney stones would improve. However, he had already failed Weight Watchers as well as several courses of prescription diet pills several years ago. He then recalls that one of his friends lost 50 pounds on the Atkins diet. Although he loves his pasta and tortillas, Jeff feels that his Atkins diet is a meal plan he can follow and successfully stick to and lose weight. Jeff buys the Atkins diet book and begins the diet immediately. He loses 55 lbs. and does not have another kidney stone as long as he keeps his weight below 200 lbs.
FACT or SHIZNICK?
Did the weight loss with the Atkins diet help Jeff reduce his kidney stone rate?
OR
Is Samme teasing and the whole story is Shiznick?

Pediatric Patient Sets Sights on Mount Kilimanjaro
Tyler Armstrong, a Caduceus4Kids patient, is believed to be the youngest person to climb Mount Whitney (14,505 feet) in Sierra Nevada, Calif. in a single day (July 26, 2011).
With that under his young belt, Tyler has set his sites even higher. After obtaining special permission by the Government of Tanzania, Tyler will be the second youngest person ever to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. His ascent to the 19,336 ft. summit, scheduled for June of 2012, will help raise funds and awareness for CureDuchenne. Tyler became interested in this type of muscular dystrophy after meeting a boy his own age who is wheelchair-bound because of this disease. Tyler realized that these patients are not able to take on the challenges of mountain climbing. Even at the young age of seven, Tyler realized he could use his athletic abilities to help others. Tyler will represent the over 300,000 boys worldwide when he faces this epic, eight-day challenge and adventure.
On Tyler's website, www.TopWithTyler.com , you can find more information about Tyler's rigorous training schedule in preparation for Mount Kilimanjaro, and how to join him on a hike. You can also find video and pictures of his climbs, links to his TV and newspaper interviews, sponsors, and information about CureDuchenne.

Caduceus Patients and Employees Give Back
The American Red Cross and Caduceus sincerely thank our wonderful donors for making our blood drives successful. The ARC depends solely on volunteer donors and sponsors, and without you, they could not continue to save lives. The Red Cross collected 16 units of blood at our Irvine office and 20 at our office in Yorba Linda. Because each unit can save up to three people, donors potentially saved 108 lives! |
