Reiki Touch
Humans and animals are energetic beings.
We have small energy portals in the middle of our palms. When we touch an animal, for instance a horse, the horse feels the energy emanating from our hands.
When we touch without consciousness the horse may not stick around.
All too often I have seen people aggressively pat horses as a way of introducing themselves. Usually the patting comes from a place of insecurity within the person.
' Nice horsee, you like me don't you' pat pat.
Patting a horse stimulates their nervous system and puts them on alert.
A more polite way of meeting a horse is to observe the horse before approaching. From here you can introduce yourself and watch to see how the horse responds. If the horse is interested you can move in closer allowing the horse to check you out. (This doesn't mean letting the horse bite you).
The horse may gently touch you with it's nose, sniffing you. From this place you may be able to move your hand in softly and slowly in order to make contact. A still touch is calming and safer for a horse, preferably on the neck or on the side of the horse.
Touch has been proven to be extremely therapeutic. People tend to live longer when they have a pet such as a dog or cat that they stroke and touch on a daily basis.
Touching a dog, cat or horse has shown to lower blood pressure. Touch is reciprocal, everyone benefits.
Now add Reiki to the equation. When I first got my horse Pretty Boy I watched how he responded to his former owner when he went to halter him. As soon as the owner got within three feet of him, Pretty Boy spun and jumped out of the way.
As soon as Pretty Boy arrived at his new home I started giving him Reiki.
Approaching him slowly and softly I put my hands on his back.
Pretty Boys' ears tracked me, I noticed that his body was tense.
Within thirty seconds he started feeling the Reiki. I could tell it was a new experience for him. He let out a huge sigh, dropped his head and started to lick and chew.
From this point on we bonded. Now he comes to me, resting his head on my shoulder gently nudging my face.

Introducing Brandon Fouche, Canine Rehabilitator.
An interview with Brandon by Sara Vaughan
Q. What is a Canine Rehabilitator?
B. A Canine Rehabilitator is a person who rehabilitates dogs that have behavioral problems. (Otherwise known as a dog behaviorist)
There are problems such as dogs biting people, dogs biting other dogs, dogs which are constantly excited, causing them to be destructive, barking and howling, and unable to listen.
Q. What do you do to solve these problems.
B. First I interview the owner of the dog. From talking with the owner I am able to assess if the problem is the dog, owner or both.
I decide if the problem is genetic, a learned behavior or both.
For example, if the dog is genetically hyper, and the owner tries to make the dog stay, the owner is actually creating stress to the dog because the dogs nervous system is telling her to move. When the owner walks away and the dog moves, the owner gets upset and tries to make the dog stay again but the dog runs away from him. Now the dog is learning to run away when the owner asks the dog to stay. So inadvertently the owner has taught the dog to run away from him when he asks the dog to stay.
What I do is teach the owner of the dog how to understand the way their dog thinks, approaching the problem from this perspective.
Dogs expect us to think like them and we expect dogs to know what we want from them.
Q. So what do you tell the owner who has a hyper dog that has learned to run away from him?
B. I tell him to practice a way of being with his dog that is about freedom as opposed to confinement.
I mean that when you ask a dog to sit, stay, lay down or use a tight leash, these are all ways of confining the dog.
When he can give his dog the freedom to make the decision to do what the owner wants them to do, a trusting relationship develops between owner and dog.
Q. What do you do when the dog is aggressive?
B. I first determine what kind of aggression the dog has. It could be: Fear aggression, Dominance Aggression, Sub Dominance Aggression or all of the above.
Then I determine if the aggression is genetic or a learned behavior. A dog that has fear aggression can be the most difficult to work with because their prognosis is hidden. A dog with fear aggression can act like a dog who has dominance aggression because you would expect the dog with fear aggression to run away.
Here is one example. When the dog is between 5 and 12 weeks, the dog has a traumatic experience making them afraid of something they weren't afraid of before. (Known as the fear imprinting period).
It could be something that the owner has done or some kind of negative experience. In either situation the dog for whatever reason was not able to process their fear.
Q. So why does a dog that has learned to be fearful of something become aggressive?
B. Say that the dog had been attacked by another dog earlier on in its life. The owner is taking the dog for a walk on a leash and they approach another dog.
The dog who has had the fearful experience moves into flight or fight mode. The owner has the dog on a leash and the dog is unable to take flight. It then becomes aggressive as it moves into fight mode. So the owner can unknowingly be placing added stress on her dog by restraining him.
Q. How do you help the owner in this situation? B. I explain to the owner that dogs are pack animals. They are naturally social and do not fight as much as we believe them too. Dogs want to be together and they fight out of stress. I help the owner understand why their dog is aggressive. The owner then has a different perspective on the situation and can begin to help their dog.
Q. What do you see in dogs that remind you of yourself?
B. Dogs have simple minds yet can perform complex tasks. This is what I see in them that reminds me of myself.
Brandon has been studying the aggressive nature of dogs for the past two decades.

Constellation Therapy - how it benefits our relationships between us and our animals.
Constellation Therapy (also known as Family Constellation Therapy) was introduced by Bert Hellinger in the 1990s' as a group therapy.
What typically happens in a constellation is that the client sets up family members or characters in the room by picking people from the group to act as representatives.
Once the representatives are placed in the room the constellation begins.
The representatives enter the knowing field. This is an energetic space that holds information that is meant for the highest good of all.
The information comes through the representatives physical bodies and emotional bodies.
For example, I have witnessed several constellations where horses were represented.
The representatives began to take on the physical gestures of horses.
The people in the roles did not act intentionally. By tuning into their bodies and emotions they instinctively began to act like horses.
In the constellation horses are given a voice.
A horse of mine called Jackie suffered from severe mastitis. Jackie is an ex *PMU mare. As a brood mare Jackie lost several foals.
In the constellation it showed that Jackie had not been able to process her grief at losing her foals. When the foals were introduced into the constellation the representative of Jackie held onto them letting out a deep soulful cry.
In hind sight, it seemed to me that her condition, mastitis, was a metaphor for her grief that had not been expressed.
Even though this particular constellation was sad it provided a container for deep healing to occur affecting all involved, including the others in the group who were witnesses.
Constellations can be facilitated for people whose animals have passed over. If the animal owner holds grief or guilt regarding the way the animal left, a constellation will help to ease tension around the situation.
* PMU stands for Pregnant Mares Urine. This is rendered into Premarin, a hormonal replacement drug prescribed mostly to menopausal women.

Horses Feel The Power of our Words

'Promoting authentic relationships between humans and horses.'
This is what I claim to do when I facilitate a private session with a person and a horse.
Do horses understand what we say?
Frequently I am asked this by clients. My response is always the same, yes of course they do. But only when we are in alignment and congruent with what we are saying. Horses can tell by the energy of our words when we are in our truth or not.
For instance, recently, while working with a client and my Arabian horse Silver, the client made a statement that Silver was the first horse that she had met that was friendly. As soon as she said this Silver moved away from her.
I suggested that perhaps what she really meant was Silver was the first horse that she had experienced a friendly interaction with.
The client thought about it and agreed. As soon as she realized that perhaps all the other horses she had met previously probably were friendly, it was just her own personal experience of them that had made her think otherwise, Silver came back to her like a magnet.
In this simple but powerful exchange, Silver taught this client a valuable lesson about making assumptions based on our opinions of things that may not be the truth.
If you would like to come and experience what it is like to be in deep resonance with a horse and to discover qualities about yourself that may be dormant or hidden maybe it's time to get a private session with a horse.
To give you extra incentive, for the month of May I am offering a discount of 30% on a private one hr horse session.
$80 as opposed to $120.
Mention this May discount when you call for your appointment.
To book an appointment call 310 466 3955 or email silver@silverhorse.org.
