Earlobe Rejuvenation
By Edward Domanskis, M.D.
The earlobes are appendages of the ears made of soft skin and a small amount of fatty tissue. When studying the earlobe appearance and anatomy, one is often surprised about the large variation in size, form and shape from person to person. Aside from being important for a normal appearance of the ears, the earlobes serve men and women as popular locations for jewelry. Often, the earlobes are pierced to fit various forms of ear ornaments ranging from little studs to larger and heavier items.
Earlobes generally become larger and longer with age and they also begin to sag. A large earlobe may require substantial ear jewelry for appropriate balance; small studs may appear "lost" within the space of a fleshy earlobe. Large earlobes can be sagging and hang down too far which may benefit from a decrease of the hanging curvature. In other instances, the earlobe is rather fleshy and elongated requiring a decrease of the overall length.
I include an earlobe reduction in almost every facelift that I do in both men and women. This, like other enhancements adds to the overall rejuvenation. I am also doing many earlobe reductions apart from facelifts. I remove the lower "saggy" part and round out the lobe that has stretched out and elongated. When earrings have torn through the earlobe, I freshen the edges and re-suture the split. The earlobes can be re-pierced after several weeks but in a slightly different location or the tear can re-cur. Scars on the earlobes heal quite well.
Earlobe enhancements are done under local anesthesia and in most cases, the procedure takes less than an hour. The cost is approximately $2,200.
Non-surgical options are available using injectible dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse to plump out sagging earlobes and the effects can last up to a year. Thermage and laser resurfacing may also be used to tighten the skin, however, they are very limited in their effects.

Phytotherapy: A Gentler Way To Health
By Marcelle Pick, RNC, MSN, OB/GYN NP
Phytotherapy is the use of plants, either in whole food form or in the form of standardized extracts and supplements, for healing purposes. Its roots trace all the way back to the beginnings of time and still stand strong in much of the world today.
Why do plants hold such wonderful healing properties? First of all, as humans we've evolved alongside the plant world, so our genes are well-versed in their language. Second of all, many medicinal plants hold adaptogenic properties, meaning their molecules communicate all along our metabolic pathways, "reading" what our bodies need at that moment in time and then providing it, instead of flooding the system without a real sense of what it needs. This is very different from pharmaceutical drugs that have been formulated to be effective on everyone, and therefore tend to deliver large doses of medication that slam the system.
It's not surprising that the study of plants for medicinal purposes led to what we now know as pharmaceuticals. Most of the drugs conventional practitioners prescribe today have roots in the plant world. The difference is that pharmaceutical companies change the chemical structure of the compound not only to specialize and magnify its actions, but also to patent the medication and sell it as their unique product. Since plants found in nature can be used and sold by everyone, phytotherapy is more accessible to the general world. It is also, in most cases, much gentler on our bodies than pharmaceutical medications.
Phytotherapy is used to prevent health concerns as well as treat them. Phytotherapy uses cell signaling to affect our bodies early on in the processes of disease and imbalance, which is ultimately far less disruptive to the system. For this reason the results often last longer.
In communicating with the plant molecules in herbal therapies, your body can oftentimes get what it needs - and only what it needs. Instead of slamming the system with large doses of medication - what I call the sledgehammer effect - your cells talk to the plant molecule upstream of the disease process to communicate what and how much they need.
We call this an adaptogenic effect, meaning our bodies can respond to and use plant molecules in various ways, depending on how much and in what proportions we have of our own hormones on board and how smoothly we're regulating and metabolizing them. So there is an astounding back-and-forth dynamic between plant cells and human cells that a man-made substance could never mimic.
These factors, like our own internal and external environments, are constantly changing. We can grow healthy plants when we water them based on their needs, and they communicate those needs to us by how much water they suck in or let pool above the soil, by the texture and color of their leaves. It's a give and take process, depending on the plant, as opposed to a standard "prescription." Phytotherapy works in a similar way with our bodies. Like the plant caretaker, it watches and listens to our cells to gauge what is needed so your body has the right amount of the herb in need.
Here are some of the plants that have been widely used for medicinal purposes:
Olive Leaf - The ancient Egyptians revered the leaves. Ancient Greeks used them to clean wounds, and the original Olympic athletes were crowned with a wreath of olive leaves. The olive leaf is even mentioned in the Bible for its purported healing properties. So it's no wonder that scientists today are looking at ways to use olive leaf, specifically for one of modern society's biggest and sneakiest health problems -- high blood pressure.
Butterbur (also known as blatterdock, flapperdock, or butterfly doc) - is a plant found throughout Europe and Asia and parts of North America. It has been used in herbal remedies for centuries and in commercial medicines in Europe for several decades for the treatment of allergies.
Black or Green Tea - A study from England's University of Newcastle upon Tyne shows that green and black teas may inhibit certain brain enzymes linked to Alzheimer's disease. The study's findings may lead to new therapeutic developments for dementia and Alzheimer's disease, which is estimated to affect 10 million people worldwide. Coffee, in contrast, did not show any significant effects in the study.
Spearmint Tea - Drinking spearmint tea may spur a hormonal shift that helps women curb unwanted hair (hirsutism), write the researchers at Suleyman Demirel University's medical school in Isparta, Turkey. The researchers asked the women to drink spearmint tea twice a day for five days. The tea was brewed by pouring boiling water over a heaping teaspoon of dried spearmint leaves. Blood tests showed that the women's levels of androgens -- hormones that include testosterone -- dipped after drinking the spearmint tea for the five days.
Black cohosh - a plant native to Eastern North America, has been used by women all over the world for generations to help with hormonal balance. It is thought to act as a functional mimetic, primarily by binding to opioid receptors in the brain to affect tissues in the body.
Chastetree - has active molecules that may affect our neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine, which acts in the brain and other parts of the body. Recent studies are showing that properties of this herb may mimic the soothing actions of progesterone.
Passionflower - has strong Native American roots and contains natural monamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's), which are known to have antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties.
Ashwagandha - is an herb with aphrodisiac and mood-stabilizing properties. Recent studies suggest this Ayurvedic herb can act in an adaptogenic fashion when androgen levels are low, activating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis to increase the production of androgens.
Wild yam - is native to North America and has been used for both menopause and menstrual-related symptoms. Research suggests that it acts as a functional mimetic of progesterone.
Soy - like red clover and kudzu, is a member of the legume family and contains phytoestrogens. It has been extensively studied and found to be supportive for improved insulin regulation, weight loss, bone health, and nail, skin and hair health. It has also been shown to decrease frequency and severity of menopausal discomforts, particularly vaginal dryness, hot flashes and night sweats.
Even though these herbal remedies have been used around the world for centuries, unfortunately, many people remain skeptical of plant-based therapy and its efficacy.
We each have different needs when it comes to restoring and maintaining balance. So it stands to reason that what works for one person may not work for another. In this country we've gotten so used to medicine taking effect immediately. If it doesn't work within a few days (or even minutes), we may toss the package and look for something else.
Phytotherapy often requires more time to have an effect than most pharmaceuticals. This is because it is gentler than the drugs manufactured today. The more gently our bodies are treated, the better. Shock isn't good for any system.
Returning The Power To Your Hands When my family and I were in Belize a few years ago, we went on the howler monkey tour in the low-lying tropical rain forest for which Belize is famous. What I found so amazing was that our tour guide knew which trees and plants cured which disorder by watching the monkeys. He would say, "Oh that one must have diarrhea, that one must have indigestion, this one is having trouble sleeping." We've shared this intuitive wisdom about medicinal plants with our primate cousins since the dawn of the ages, but only recently have we in the United States begun to reawaken to its power. Today, scientific advances are providing a much better understanding of why phytotherapy works and the quantity and form of the plants that act most reliably and safely.
A Gentler Way To Health We are learning more and more about how phytochemicals speak to our bodies. They can help boost digestion, cool an overactive inflammatory response, rebalance hormones, build immunity, facilitate stable blood sugar, improve adrenal reserve, detoxify the liver, slow our heart rates, tone our blood vessels, conserve our bones, soothe our nervous systems, restore a healthy sleep cycle, and live longer happier lives. In the end, drawing on the gentle healing qualities of plants allows us to reconnect and reintegrate ourselves with the natural order of things. And it's been working for centuries.

At what age should I begin thinking about cosmetic enhancements and procedures to maintain a youthful appearance throughout my life? What about my boyfriend, when should he start?
Answer: By Dr. Douglas Hamilton & Dr. Babak Azizzadeh
The age boundaries are a little fuzzy. For instance, the advice we offer to men and women in their twenties - wear sunscreen, eat right, practice preventive maintenance - can easily apply to those in their teens as well as those beyond the twenties. Likewise, the maintenance program we introduce to those in their fifties can go well beyond their sixties and even seventies. The maintenance phase is particularly helpful for those who want to look timeless. Here are some basic guidelines to go by:
- What to do in your 20's - This is the time to arm yourself against the arrows that Mother Nature eventually slings your way. Since you don't typically have visible signs of aging during your twenties, this is mostly a time when you should be thinking about the damage that is inevitable based on our modern lifestyles. Begin educating yourself about preventive skin care including lotions, microderabrasions and nonablative lasers to reduce the appearance of fine lines and roughness.
- What to do in your 30's - This is when the face (particularly Caucasians) starts to actively age in ways that are both noticeable and frustrating. Action is key. We fill the bill with Botox as prevention or treatment - including our patented Azizzadeh-Hamilton Conservative Botox (AHCB) approach (for actors who wish to maintain facial movement)-combined with fillers, an active skin-care regimen and fractional lasers to reverse the signs of aging.
- What to do in your 40's - Be prepared to consider your first procedure; various procedures will become like friends to you during this critical phase as we smooth and sculpt a face that blends youthfulness with maturity in a way that few will ever notice. The procedures include Thermage, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), volume restoration with fillers (Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Sculptra) and/or multilevel fat grafting, and perhaps all the above plus other surgical procedures.
- What to do in your 50's & beyond - This is the time to correct the past and prepare for the future. During your fifties you are introduced to a combined regimen of surgical and nonsurgical procedures, which include all the above restorative measures plus various face-lift approaches to subtly smooth and sculpt your face in preparation for the coming years.
Douglas Hamilton, MD is the director of the Laser Rejuvenation Institute and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine.
Babak Azizzadeh, MD is the director of the Center for Facial and Nasal Plastic Surgery and an assistant clinical professor of surgery at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. Their new book entitled Beverly Hills Beauty Secrets: A Prominent Dermatologist & Plastic Surgeon's Guide to Facial Rejuvenation was released in July of 2009. |

Snap-On-Smiles By Dean Carlston, DDS
A confident and beautiful smile is just a snap away! No shots, no drilling, no adhesives and you can even eat with it!
Snap-On Smile is a thin, flexible, specialized resin material fabricated to snap over your actual teeth and can be removed like any dental appliance. The material can be made as thin as .5mm without compromising strength. You can choose from 23 color shades and 18 smile designs.
Looking for a celebrity smile but don't have the Red Carpet budget? Snap-On-Smile is the affordable cosmetic alternative to permanent dental work - priced at a fraction of the cost of a full set of porcelain veneers or crowns. It provides a viable restorative option for all patients - particularly those who are dental phobic, financially challenged, or medically compromised.
I often use these appliances to give my patients a preview of how they will look after extensive full mouth rehabilitation where we completely change their smile through a combination of orthodontic and cosmetic procedures. For examble, a gentleman was getting married and did not want to start his orthodontic treatment prior to the marriage, so we created the snap on smile since his existing smile was very discolored and mis-aligned. The appliance gave him the confidence to meet all of the new in-laws and smile for the photos. He will start his extensive rehabilitation treatment after he settles in with his new bride!
We charge $1,500 for a complete arch, which is a complete set of upper or lower teeth. They really don't make them with fewer teeth, because those teeth covered become longer, wider and thicker; and it looks strange not to fill out the entire arch. I must say that most people use this as a transition while saving up for non-removable more long lasting reconstruction. These appliances are great when we are considering lumineers (those thin veneers bonded to the teeth with no or very little natural tooth reduction) because lumineers also give one a brawder fuller smile so its nice to "preview" before the big decision.
So if stains, chips, missing teeth or other imperfections have you hiding your smile, talk with your dentist about how Snap-On-Smile can provide the beautiful smile you have always longed for. You and your dentist can design the perfect smile for your needs and enhance your facial appearance in only two visits!

Fish Oil - In addition to eating fish a few times each week, everyone should be taking supplemental fish oil, which is a rich source of the omega-3 fatty acids (EPA) eicosapatentaenoic acid and (DHA) docosahexaenoic acid. EPA and DHA are precursors to chemicals in the body that help reduce inflammation. You might recall in our recent SimplyAgeless411 ezine, our feature story "Inflammation: The Silent Killer" discussed the diseases caused by inflammation including arthritis, asthma, cancer and heart disease. The American Heart Association now recommends 1-4 grams of fish oil daily.
Our Omega 3-6-9 is one product that truly covers all aspects of supporting heart and circulation health - it contains flax and canola seed oils for Omega 3, GLA from primrose for Omega 6, and Oleic acid for Omega 9. Omega 3-6-9 is the perfect product for those wanting to add essential oils to their diet. Click here to order from the www.SimplyAgeless411.com website.
Coenzyme Q10 - CoQ10 is needed in the production of ATP which is the primary fuel for cellular function. It is also a powerful antioxidant that aids in the regeneration and recycling of vitamins C and E and helps protect the body from heart disease and various types of cancer and aids in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions such as angina, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. While CoQ10 is produced naturally by the body, most people can benefit from supplementation. 200-400 mg. per day is recommended. Click here to order from the www.SimplyAgeless411.com website.
Resveratrol - the "red wine extract" is a powerful antioxidant produced naturally in plants in response to attacks by viruses or fungi and is found in small amounts in red wine. Resveratrol is one of a group of compounds that affect proteins in the body that help control aging. Studies at Harvard University have shown that resveratrol supplementation can increase the lifespan of yeast, fruit flies and fish; and a 2008 study showed that resveratrol was able to counter the harmful effects of a high-fat diet in mice.
Our natural Resveratrol provides powerful antioxidant support, proven cardiovascular protection, positive anti-aging effects, a healthy inflammatory response and healthy weight management. 200-400 mg per day is recommended. Click here to order from the www.SimplyAgeless411.com website.
Green Tea Extract - No other food or drink has been reported to have as many health benefits as green tea and it has been recorded as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years. In fact the ancient Chinese proverb says "better to be deprived of food for 3 days than tea for one". Green Tea's health-promoting action is due to its rich content of antioxidant compounds such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and catechins. Benefits ascribed to EGCG include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, supporting cardiovascular health, protection against UVB radiation, inhibition of cell membrane damage (more effectively than vitamins E or C), insulin-mimicking action, bone-building, neuroprotection and increased 24 hour thermogenesis in humans.
Green tea extracts have been shown to have more health benefits than an equal volume of black tea in terms of antioxidant capacity- green tea has 165 mg of total phenol equivalents compared to black tea's 124 mg. Green tea extracts have more catechins than black tea and this is due mainly to its EGCG content, which has been shown to prevent LDL cholesterol oxidation and the lowering of LDL levels. This may help to explain the" Japanese Paradox" where the heart health of Japanese men is exceptionally high, event though approximately seventy five percent of them are smokers. By 2007, there were over 500 published scientific articles related to the health benefits of EGCG. One 500 mg. capsule equals 8-10 cups of green tea without the caffeine or diuretic effects. Click here to order from the www.SimplyAgeless411.com website.
Vitamin D - is a fat-soluble vitamin, it is well-absorbed and there are no known allergies. There are few food sources for vitamin D. In the United States, milk and dairy foods are fortified, but Americans still tend to be low. Vitamin D can be synthesized in the body from sunlight, but the sun is not a reliable source of vitamin D, particularly for those living in the Northern hemisphere. Using sunblock further blocks vitamin D synthesis. Here are some of the benefits of vitamin D:
- Manages critical mineral balance in the blood and bones.
- Improves absorption of calcium
- Promotes strong, dense bones
- Reduces the number of falls and consequent skeletal fractures
- Improves muscle strength and neuromuscular function
- Provides important immune and autoimmune support
- Nourishes gums and teeth
- May reduce coronary plaque
- Improves joints and range-of-motion
- Promotes lung function
- Supports colon, breast and prostate health
- May improve cognition
1,000 IU per day is recommended. Click here to order from the www.SimplyAgeless411.com website. |

Cin City by Karen Norris
The 411 on Cinnamon is in! Cinnamon is emerging as a true WonderFood in terms of health protection. Who knew that it is also a natural appetite suppressant? Here's the scoop...
Research has linked this copper-colored stuff with reduced blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels to name just a few. A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that adding a little more than a teaspoon a day helped tame blood sugar and decrease the appetite. Cinnamon also contains polyphenols, antioxidants that create healthier arteries and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The spice's energizing scent has also been found to help increase alertness.
Cinnamon originated from tropical Asia, especially Sri Lanka and India. Now the shrub is grown in almost every tropical region of the world. The herb, owing to its vast medicinal uses, had found a prominent position in traditional medicines, especially Ayurveda (the traditional Indian medicinal system). Traditionally cinnamon, due to its medicinal properties, has been used in many cultures for treating a variety of health disorders including diarrhea, arthritis, menstrual cramps, yeast infections, colds, flu, and digestive problems.
Now it is being used all over the world for treating a variety of health disorders including obesity, respiratory problems, diabetes, skin infections, blood impurity, menstruation problems, heart disorders, etc. The most widely used part of cinnamon is its bark. Because cinnamon is nutrient dense, it is thermogenic, which means it naturally increases your metabolism. As your metabolism revs higher you will burn more of the food you have already eaten as fuel, and store less as body fat. Cinnamon is rich in essential minerals such as manganese, iron and calcium. It is also rich in fiber.
More of the health benefits of cinnamon include the following:
- Brain Tonic: Cinnamon boosts the activity of the brain and hence acts as a good brain tonic. It helps in removing nervous tension and memory loss. Research at the Wheeling Jesuit University in the US has proven that the scent of cinnamon has the ability to boost brain activity. The team of researchers led by Dr. P. Zoladz found that people who were administered with cinnamon improved their scored on cognitive activities such as attention processes, virtual recognition memory, working memory, and visual-motor response speed.
- Blood Purification: Cinnamon helps in removing blood impurities. Therefore, it is often recommended in some parts of the world for acne.
- Blood Circulation: Cinnamon aids in the circulation of blood due to the presence of a blood thinning compound in it. This blood circulation helps significantly in removing pain. Good blood circulation also ensures oxygen supply to the body cells leading to higher metabolic activity.
- Infections: Due to its antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties, it is effective on external as well as internal infections. It helps in destroying germs in the gall bladder and bacteria in staph infections.
- Healing: Cinnamon helps to in stop bleeding and facilitates the healing process.
- Pain: Cinnamon is also an anti-inflammatory and is recommended for arthritis.
- Diabetes: Cinnamon has the ability to control blood sugar. Research has shown that it is particularly very helpful for patients suffering from Type 2 diabetes. Researchers at the USDA's Human Nutritional Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, studied the effects of cinnamon on blood sugar. They found that a water-soluble polyphenol compound called MHCP, which is abundant in cinnamon, synergistically acted with insulin to help better the utilization of insulin in the body.
Best part: Cinnamon is easy to add to the foods that you already eat and it makes everything taste better. Both ground and stick forms are equally healthy, but sticks have a longer shelf life (one year, compared with 6 months for ground). No need to grind your own: Pre-ground store-bought is as good as fresh ground and saves the hassle. Aim for 1/2 to 1 1/2 teaspoons (or one to two sticks) a day.
So....spice it up! Try these tricks to get more of this nice spice.
My Favorite 5 minute Low Fat Easy Healthy Cinnamon Recipes:
- Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and 2 packets of stevia or Truvia sweetener over a sliced apple. Microwave for 2 minutes until hot and crunchy. Top with high protein Greek yogurt from Trader Joe's. A yummy late afternoon treat!
- Add 1/2 to 1 1/2 teaspoons to hot oatmeal or cold cereal
- Mix 1/2 teaspoon into 2 tablespoons peanut butter and spread onto celery sticks.
- Stir 1/2 teaspoon into plain yogurt.
- Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon over sweet potatoes or carrots.
- Toss 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon over broiled bananas.
- Coat 2 cups of raw nuts with a mix of 1/4 cup honey and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and roast at 350F for 5-10 minutes.
- Shake three dashes into your favorite fruit smoothie.
- Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon straight into your coffee, latte, or cappuccino.
