CUAA & Kids Against Hunger Food-Kits Reach Haiti
In the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009,
Concordia University Ann Arbor (CUAA) held Tool Time, a gathering for

nonprofit Kids Against Hunger (KAH). During the fall event, the group
packed 15,000 meals, and during the spring event, 12,500 meals were
packed.
Roughly one-third of the food packed went
into a warehouse and was stored for disaster relief. Within hours of
the earthquake in Haiti, KAH began making arrangements with the United
Nations to provide food for the citizens of Haiti. On February 3, a
U.S. Navy helicopter delivered the food that was packed at CUAA... READ MORE

Led by Alexandra Simpson, Adjunct Instructor in English, and Kodi Scheer, Lecturer in English at the University of Michigan

science fail us in the context of disease, loss, and grief? Simpson
(poetry) and Scheer (fiction) will read from their work and discuss the
writing process within (and without) the scientific milieu.

John Barr, Jr. Publishes Confessions of a Substitute Teacher
John Barr, Jr. ('06 OLA) is finally talking in Confessions of a Substitute Teacher. Written with such fervor and vividness, this eye-opener chronicles's unforgettable experiences from the good times to the bad: from
receiving letters and cupcakes from several students to being assaulted
by a fifth-grader.
Having subbed for twelve years, Barr provides
insightful ideas and suggestions that may prove relevant to teaching
today's classrooms especially in schools where students are known to
disrespect teachers. He also shares a little bit of history and how
each school district compare and contrast.
"I know I am taking a big risk by writing this book but it is a story
that needs to be told, not just for me but for a lot of subs as well
who are underpaid and under respected," Barr states.

Brandon Watkins Publishes Books on Entrepreneurship
Concordia graduate, Brandon Watkins, has published a book entitled, "The Leading Entrepreneur: Taking the helm of your small business and leading it to success."
The book is based on the work Watkins conducted in the Master's program at Concordia University, and borrows substantially from the writing he did during that time. Watkins feels the book contributes to the conversation about entrepreneurship, something that is critical in the current economy. While the book is primarily academic, his hope is that it can be a lead-in for future writing that might be oriented toward more practical ideas and techniques.
