Reading Novels, Reading Maps Books & Coffee
Tuesday, October 13 - 4:00
p.m. Earhart Manor Living Room
RSVP on Facebook!
Free and open to the public
Discussion led by Mark Looker, Professor of English, and Michael Kalmes, Professor of Political Science. Looker and Kalmes discuss their project
using multiple "thematic" maps in layers to uncover connections between
apparently unrelated urban phenomena (e.g. poverty and the availability
of public transportation, WWI and WWII bombing and the narrative
structure of modernist novels, etc.). They will begin by focusing on
the city of London in the last two centuries, and use Virginia Woolf's
novel Mrs. Dalloway as a test case in developing computer programs that
superimpose maps from any city on top of one another. They will discuss
and demonstrate their adaptation of the Geographical Information System
program ArcMap in carrying out this interdisciplinary work.

Gallery Reception - Pooneh Maghazehe - Photographs

Friday, October 16 - 7:00
p.m. - Kreft Center Gallery
Exhibit runs Oct. 13 - Dec. 6 Free and open to the public
RSVP on Facebook!
Winner of last year's Kreft Competition
show, artist Pooneh Maghazehe returns for a solo exhibit. Born
into a Shiite Muslim family of Iranian descent and raised in
Philadelphia, Maghazehe explores the delicate balance between
bi-culturalism and assimilation in a combination of embroidery,
all-American hot iron branding, Amish fashion, hipsters in leather,
sacred Islamic numerology, and gangsta-bling. At its core, her work
responds to and adapts the tendency for the human psyche to subscribe
to specific categorizations, or subcultures, in response to feelings of
ambivalence, uncertainty and/or anxiety.
Maghazehe was also part of a recent exhibit entitled, "Inside Inside Out" at The Chelsea Art Museum in New York, NY.
