New Summer Term Provides Affordable Jump-Start
 This summer the university will roll out a new month-long session in July that will offer a variety of general studies courses in both the daytime and evening at $125 per credit hour (for up to two classes).
This academic session, which will follow Session 1 starting in May, will begin on Monday, July 6, and run through August 7.
General Biology, Speech Communication, English Composition, General Psychology, and Intro to Sociology will all be offered in the second summer session.

Genig, Vice President of Academics at Concordia University, stated,
"The program is designed to provide an extremely affordable alternative
in education for individuals wishing to accelerate their education.
Concordia's program reaches out to a variety of audiences. For home
school and high school students, it provides a jumpstart to higher
education. Students of fellow universities and community colleges will
be encouraged to expedite their educational careers through compact,
concise general studies classes. Day and evening classes will provide
flexibility for students with competing work schedules."

Musical duo and Christian megagroup LOST AND FOUND headlines this year's Concordiapalooza. LOST AND FOUND The event started as an end of the year music fest, but has developed into a community wide celebration. This year's "palooza" is the first year it will be opened to the public. The concert is free for Concordia students, faculty and staff. Visitors to campus will receive full access to Concordiapalooza for an entry fee of $5.

The WHAC Honors Concordia Softball Players
The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference handed out season-end awards to four Concordia Cardinals this year. Three Cardinals were named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team: Jeni Bollenbacher, freshman from Edwardsburg, Mich.; Georgia Dewey, junior from Marine City, Mich.; and Katie Gallan, sophomore from LaSalle, Mich.
Laura Kordrick, a junior from Plymouth, Mich., was named to the 2009 All-Academic Team.
Jeni Bollenbacher was also named to the 2009 WHAC Champions of Character Team.

The WHAC Honors Concordia Baseball Players
The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference handed out season-end awards to four Concordia baseball players this year. Two Cardinal were named to the WHAC All-Conference Team: Tim McEvoy, senior catcher from Detroit, Mich., and Ben Sprague, senior third baseman and relief pitcher from DeWitt, Mich.
Three Cardinals were named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team: Zach Johnston, junior utility player from Ionia, Mich.; Brent McNeil, junior pitcher from Springboro, Ohio; and Tony Pounders, junior shortstop from Livonia, Mich.
Five players were named to the 2009 All-Academic Team: Jeff Bultinck, sophomore from Sterling Heights, Mich.; Zach Johnston; Tyler Maxey, senior from Dimondale, Mich.; Frank Persichino, junior from Sterling Heights, Mich.; and Ben Sprague.
Frank Persichino was also named to the 2009 WHAC Champions of Character Team.

Baseball's Brent McNeil earns WHAC Player of the Week
With another solid performance in a win over Rochester College, lefthanded pitcher Brent McNeil (Jr. - Springboro, Ohio) was
selected as Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pitcher
of the Week in the second week of April.
McNeil went the distance, striking out five, in an 8-inning 2-1 victory over the
Warriors to improve to 5-2 on the season.
At that point, McNeil was averaging of 7.2 innings pitched per game, which was sixth in the country. > Back to top

Naumanns' Worldwide Service to the Church
 Cheryl D. (Freitag) Naumann (AA 1976) and Jonathan C. Naumann (BA 1979) are both called to Redeemer Lutheran Church and School, Oakmont, PA, where they serve as Deaconess and Pastor respectively.
In April 2009, Concordia Publishing House released Cheryl's book: "In the Footsteps of Phoebe: A Complete History of the Deaconess Movement in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod." In conjunction with the book, Cheryl's new website includes historic illustrations and other special features, along with her blog and a "Woman of the Week" column. Cheryl and Jonathan have five sons, one daughter, two daughter-in-laws, and three grandchildren. Two sons live in England, one in Wales, and one is currently in Germany serving as a doctor in the British Army. Another son lives in Washington D.C. and their daughter is in the deaconess training program at Concordia University Chicago.
Jonathan recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination and Cheryl is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her deaconess commissioning in May 2009.

Ethridges Welcome Fourth Child
Shawn Ethridge (C2A2, 1994) and Davina (Robbins) Ethridge (Concordia, Seward, 1995) announce the birth of their fourth child, Ruth Tryphena (cf. Romans 16:12) Ethridge on March 30, 2009. Ruth was born 8 lbs, 5 ozs. and 20 3/4'" long. "Baby Ruth" joins her older sisters Rachael (7) and Hannah (5) and her brother Caleb (3). The Ethridges live in Garfield, Minnesota.

teacher at Dakar Academy in Senegal, Africa. Joshua provides updates on

James Neuendorf's "The Unseen Author"
James Neuendorf ('07) has released his first book of photography, "The Unseen Author: Stories of the Embera," which chronicles his trip deep into the rain forests of Panama. The back of the book describes the mission as being "quest to find the
common thread between the life stories of the indians living there and
the Christian faith. With stunning photography and engaging narratives,
he recounts the lives of the Embera Indians as a part of the eternal
and epic Story of God's deeds among his people."
James and his wife, Christel (Elde) ('06), are serving as missionaries living in Panama. James is the Communication Specialist for Latin America, which means
he travels to all the countries with missionaries and mission projects
funded by LCMS World Mission.
Christel teaches English classes at two of the five Lutheran
churches here in Panama, and is also working in
the Latin America office doing various activities to further the work
in Latin America.

Bill Ondracka Joins Seminary Cycling Team
Bill Ondracka ('07) is now a second-year student at Concordia Seminary
in St. Louis, Missouri. Bill, originally from Belleville, Mich., is on
the six-member team "Concordia Seminary Cycling," which races in the
Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference.The team currently ranks 8th out of
15 Division 2 schools. Bill says
it's an "awesome" experience to be on the cycling team, working with
Professors Kloha and Dr. Robert Weise and fellow seminarians, who
"worked together, and learned from each other, and ... motivate each
other."
The Concordia Seminary Cycling team is organizing the fifth annual
Tour de Sem bicycle ride May 16. The 90-mile ride from St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Columbia, Ill., to Altenburg, Mo., is open to "all
friends of Concordia."

2009 Employee of the Year - John Schnack
John Schnack, director of educational technologies, has been named the 2008-09 Employee of the Year. John's tireless efforts have revitalized the system technologies on campus, and will help guide the university in its transition to stronger technology and software delivery to the students.

2009 Faculty Scholarship and Creative Activity Award
Ben Freudenburg, director and professor for the Family Life Program, was award the 2009 faculty scholarship and creative activity award. This award was presented not for a single creative endeavor, but rather for a remarkable body of work as an instructor and leader in the family life program. This work includes countless workshops, presentations, and conferences to help share the principles and tenets of our family life program. In addition to this commitment of sharing the Gospel through the building of strong family units, Freudenburg has devoted much of his time and energy helping to develop a family friendly network in the Great Lakes area.

2009 Faculty Teaching Excellence/Campus Leadership Award
Michael Kalmes, Associate Professor of Political Science, has been awarded the 2009 faculty teaching excellence/campus leadership award. During his tenure at Concordia, he has made a significant difference in the climate of teaching and learning and has been a standard of campus leadership for our faculty. He is recognized by his colleagues for his classroom teaching, instructional leadership, creative course development and instructional support. His keen interest in current affairs and deep understanding of their political and social root are evident in the diversity of the subjects he teaches.
He has also distinguished himself as a leader in the area of social studies education through his success in designing a social science education program, which has received the distinction of being nationally recognized by the National Council for the Social Studies.
In addition to his role in the classroom, he has provided leadership for the university in the area of assessment and instructional improvement. He has also played a strong role in integrating technology in the classroom, both in his own instructional practices as well as his work in developing future educators and social science practitioners.
