 | | 2010 Kitchen Design: Longevity | |
Megan Wallace Designer | While the new year and the new decade certainly bring new trends along with them, this year's key focus for kitchen design is far more than just colors and materials. The current economic recession (that I hope we are slowly coming out of) has made all of us more aware of quality versus quantity. While such a simple saying can be applied to many topics, it definitely applies to kitchen design and the idea that bigger may not necessarily be better.
So what is better? Functional designs that make the most of your space. A reconfigured floorplan that maximizes efficiency in your kitchen while giving you quality products, materials, and appliances with an updated look! Now, more than ever, consumers want products that will last and withstand the test of time. You want quality materials, the utmost functionality in your kitchen, and versatility as well.
Since kitchen projects usually only happen once, maybe twice, in a lifetime, longevity and versatility of the kitchen design are the two main ideas to consider when planning your kitchen. And remember the key ingredient for your new kitchen recipe: Toulmin Cabinetry!

 | | 2010 Mandatory Lead-Safety Training & Certification | |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting rule (RRP). The rule requires firms and individuals involved in interior and exterior renovation repair and painting to be certified by April 2010 and that they follow specific lead-safe work practices to minimize exposure to lead-based paint dust. As a contractor, we play an important role in protecting public health by helping prevent lead exposure. Ordinary renovation and maintenance activities in older structures can create dust that contains lead--even small amounts of lead can harm children and adults. Research has shown that the most common source of lead exposure for children today is deteriorated lead-based paint in older housing and contaminated lead-based paint dust.
Renovation and repair activities can create additional significant risks to children when lead-based paint in pre-1978 structures is disturbed. Because children's developing bodies and nervous systems are particularly susceptible to poisoning from lead-based paint, it is especially important that renovation, repair and painting work be performed in a way that minimizes exposure to lead-based paint dust. One of Toulmin Cabinetry's installers Mark Parker has acquired the Lead-Safety Certification and is available to work on renovation and repair projects where lead-based paint may be present. For more information about the EPA's new Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting rule go to www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/sbcomplianceguide.pdf or call Toulmin Cabinetry (205) 366-0807.
