The Problems with
Price Lists
|
You ask for a price list?? We want to make you happy, but for us posting prices is a really tough job.
So, are you looking for two wide boards for a table top, combined with matching 12/4 rift sawn wood for legs? We can do that. Do you want a specific type of figure to meet the demands of a particular client? Yep, we can handle that too.
Considering all that goes into making selections for customers, it is clear that there is lots of hand sorting and individual attention involved in every order.
BUT, we do aim to please, so we have posted a VERY GENERAL guideline for pricing on our website. PLEASE REMEMBER prices are NOT set in stone.
If your project does not need any extremely wide or figured material it is very likely that we can fill your needs at lower pricing than listed in our guideline. These are just ball park figures for high grade, sequentially sawn, hand selected stock.
PLEASE REMEMBER!! For a confirmed price on any set listed online please shoot us a quick email.... OR CHALLENGE US TO FIND THE PERFECT LUMBER FOR YOUR PROJECT. We are up to the task!
Here's a look at HORIZON's price GUIDELINE....remember, quotes are not firm!!!

Website Improvements!
|
You have talked.
We have listened.
In addition to wanting price lists, our customers have also requested a more easily navigable website.
So..... as always, we use our www.horizonwood.com site as our online brochure. It is updated as needed and always worth checking out.
The big improvements have come in our HORIZON EVOLUTIONS site and online inventory
.
Take a look and you will find a buyer's guide that includes answers to the questions we hear most frequently. Hopefully the simplicity we have built into the navigation system will help you buyers understand how to work your way thru the site.
As with all things HORIZON, this site is a work in progress. We try to stay dynamic. If you have suggestions for even more improvements please give us a holler. We aim to please.

HORIZON's Sawyer keeps things rolling
Employee highlight Jody Brian, Mill Manager and Head Sawyer |
Perhaps one of the most pivotal positions for getting things right with HORIZON's manufacturing is the role of the sawyer. Jody Brian has been exercising his skills in the HORIZON sawyer's booth for nearly 18 years, in fact his entire working career has been focused on logs and wood. Experience is the best teacher. Jody has been well taught.
Jody sits in a glass enclosed, sound deadened booth as he performs his job. The glowing array of screens and computer controls in front of him, and the constant motion of the logs passing by is almost hypnotic. Yet he is always on the alert; analyzing, evaluating, watching log after log. When he discusses the skills it takes to be a proficient sawyer he talks about "keeping a flow". Finding the rhythm, maintaining the beat. It all is part of being productive and safe. The sawyer's booth is an eagle's nest. From his perch, the sawyer can see the action below as the wood goes through the edger and/or trimmer. Remote cameras and monitors bring the farthest corners of the sawmill's activity into view right in front of the sawyer's eye. In addition to keeping a focus on the logs that travel past the band saw, Jody is also acutely aware of the entire process. The workers manning the green chain and the roll of lumber or flitches as they move through the system are all part of the flow of the mill that Jody maintains from his booth.

Announcing HORIZON's
Coffee Table Competition WINNER!
|
.....and the WINNER is.....
Prashun Patel !!!
In quest of the perfect coffee table, HORIZON launched its first ever woodworking competition with last quarter's newsletter. We had a great, but challenging time judging the entries that came rushing in.
Patel's winning design floated to the top of the pile for a couple of reasons. The workmanship shown in his sample photographs was superb. His design was balanced and pleasing. Perhaps a quote from his entry description summarizes Patel's woodworking philosophy best, "I like live edge furniture that doesn't appear too chunky or rustic. The leg design and extruded lip will soften the lines of the 'slab' top, while allowing the beauty that only flitched lumber has to shine."
We are excited to see how Prashun is able to take a HORIZON flitch and make it even more beautiful than Mother Nature's version!
Thanks to all of you who sent in design entries. Lots of creative and talented woodworkers responded to our competition and were willing to help Pete refine his furniture collection. Picking the winner was a tough job!
CONGRATULATIONS PRASHUN!!

It's nearly time to say goodbye.
|
STAY TUNED.......
Our Winter Newsletter, due out in late January 2012, will contain a bio of our winner and a build diary of his creation. He has already been sending detailed photos of the work in progress. Each installment gets us more excited! More to come....

Trade Show Travels
|
Shows require a lot of prep work, and time away from our wood, but we always learn a lot and the networking is fantastic. It was great to greet old friends and make new ones at both the Woodworking in America (WIA) show in Cincinnati and the Architectural Woodworker Institute (AWI) conference in Charlotte. For those of you who stopped by and shook our hands, thanks for being there! We look forward to crossing trails with you in the future. |
Slabs...
a look at a cool table made from HORIZON wood
|
Slabs... are HOT! Just wanted to share a glimpse of one very successful use of material from our slab gallery. John Lore of Live Edge Design created this beauty. It manages to exemplify the awesome dimension of the slab without making the piece feel heavy or overly massive. Lore used mixed media in this project. It has a steel base that pierces the top. Overall size 96" X 45". Pretty impressive!
 |
"Thanks", to John Lore of Live Edge Design for allowing us to show off the use of HORIZON slabs in his work.
