Taming the BUTTERNUT BEAST
| Not only are HORIZON's log buyers creative, they also have a sense of humor! But gee, we can't say our yard manager was particularly entertained when it came time to unload this beauty (or beast?). This piece was just too cool to pass up - full of crotches and character! Only problem is we don't quite know how to promote it....any ideas???

Totem pole, chainsaw carving, coat rack for giants? Click on the link for more photos of this bizarre butternut beast!! |
Item of the Month ------
FEB 2011- WIDE WALNUT
set 210418 |
This extra-wide set of walnut was chosen to be February's Item of the Month due to it's ability to stand out from the crowd. Walnut of this size and clarity is definitely a special find. The log has been milled to a 10/4 thickness which can be used for some massive tops. Actually, with over 500bf in the set this log could supply the wood for many different projects. So read through the IoM page to learn a little more about this specialty log, the history it contains, and our adventure in milling the monster. |
Blowing our Horn.... |
We sort of hate to brag, but our customers have been saying such nice stuff about us we just have to share! Please take a minute and look at the updated "TESTIMONIALS PAGE" on our horizonevolutions.com site. And while you are at it, click the "ABOUT US" link on our horizonwood.com site and meet our recently promoted Office Manager, Tama Foster. We are pretty proud of her!

On the HORIZON for 2011........ |
We have started off the new year with a bang. To date we have not yet broken one single resolution! Not a bad record. So, just to get you all current with a few things HORIZON is tackling this year in our ongoing effort to make our products even better......
One project.....We are striving for the elimination of sticker marks on our lumber. Although complaints of sticker stain are very few and far between, the risk is always there. We are especially interested in protecting our lighter colored woods such as the beautiful BE maple and curly maple. So, we are sending off a full truckload of 72" long hard maple, approx 24 bundles (14,000 bf!) to have made into grooved stickers which will allow us to air dry longer, do more white woods at various times of the year, and dry some of the thicker, figured woods even more slowly, all without developing surface stain. Although the stain planes away, it is not very attractive! Appearance means a lot and every little mm gained in thickness can be important. A particularly curious note about this story is that the company we located to make the grooved stickers actually bought one of our earlier bandsaws from us when we did a major upgrade about 10 years ago. It definately is a small world! We are looking forward to getting the groved stickers back in a couple of weeks. Thanks Kelvin! http://www.kilnsticks.com/ (oh, and if you are wondering, the fantastic flitches the stickers are resting on are some amazing pieces of 10/4 Elm. Nice stuff!)
Another project..... We have fullyl enclosed our container/LTL loading area with roll up garage doors. This will keep the wood in a climate controlled, protected environment from the time it leaves the kilns until it is loaded in a truck. A consistent moisture level is important and we want to do everything to ensure that this is the case at the time your receive the material. As always, shipments are fully wrapped in plastic prior to trucking. Take a peek at the photos on the link and you will understand the elements we have to contend with as we strive to protect your wood. Good thing we like winter!
And for our ongoing project eShop.... Just a reminder: for your smaller wood needs, checkout Horizon's eShop. We continue to learn new ways to streamline our process and simplify your shopping experience. It is the convenient and easy way to pick up individual pieces or small sets. Just what you need to finish your latest project, or to stash away in your own treasure trove to save for a masterpiece-to-be! --BUT -- Remember, for your larger purchases it is still best to take your time and examine the postings on HORIZON's ONLINE INVENTORY. We have added several new selections recently. Give us a call with questions. Our customer service is guaranteed! |
Customer Highlights ..... .....Clark Kellogg of "Kellogg Furniture Design"
|
It is exciting when wood workers and wood lovers look at a project through the same sort of eyes. Clark Kellogg of Kellogg Furniture Design has an appreciation for his wood that parallels the feelings we have here at HORIZON.
In discussing his craft and its raw material Clark says, "It is important to understand that wood comes from TREES. Wood is not just a commodity to be purchased at the lumber yard, it is an extension of nature". He goes on to compare his thoughts to an understanding that food comes from the earth, not from little boxes that appear on the grocery shelves. We hear ya, Clark!
In creating his "Shizen Table" Kellogg didn't just cut into his wood, he analyzed it, looked at the grain and took advantage of its uniqueness. He shaped his table to follow the curve of the cherry flitchs he purchased from HORIZON. He made the best of the consecutively cut pieces that HORIZON provided him and created the lower stretcher from wood that was sawn from the same log, containing the same sweep of grain and color characteristics as the top. The graceful uniformity of his piece could not be obtained any other way. Regarding the table's construction, Clark says, ".....all the parts (minus the drawer sides and bottom) were milled from the same two boards I received from HORIZON. This was partly to ensure grain and color continuity from the table top, but more than that, it just seemed like the table should be made from one tree."

and on a more personal note........
meet BRIAN - long term HORIZON employee |
It was over 17 years ago that Brian Saline stepped into the scene at HORIZON. Since that day there has never been a lack of character at our place. Brian is full of it! (oh, I could say that in more ways than one!) Regardless, we can always count on Brian to have something to say about any issue that comes up. He brings an unpredictable spot of color to the day-to-day stuff that goes on at the workplace. Over his years at HORIZON Brian has managed to master a multitude of tasks and we find he is often behind the scenes doing those things that need to be done without being asked, whether it is plowing snow or cleaning up the log yard or debarking logs. He puts in lots of hours and can be counted on to pitch in and help when the situation demands. In his personal world Brian keeps himself busy. He has become a master of the BBQ grill and can often be found spearheading chicken dinner fund raisers in the community for any number of worthy organizations or individuals who may have been dealt an unfortunate hand in the game of life. Big and boisterous, Brian has a heart that matches his demeanor! He keeps us on our toes with his tales and his antics, but Brian is a good guy to have on the team. Thanks Brian! |
