Comments on the Industry.....
|
 | 'Wm Penn' |
Well it's almost the end of the year already and this is the last editorial for 2010. After last quarter's musings when I shared my opinion that the US dollar's devaluation is used to carry some of the debt of the rest of the World, I guess I'll tone things it down a bit. Defending Old Glory and the American way is not a battle necessary to fight here. We fight those battles globally, defending more than just currency value, recognize it or not.....if you get my drift. Anyway, thanks for all the comments, pro and con. That's what makes the world go round.
We are, and have been, busy this year. HORIZON's core business of producing container load quantities for our overseas customers is back to a steady flow. Perhaps not 10 containers a week, but a flow where we can comfortably manage and insure quality and consistency. The big increase we have seen on our front has been in the smaller more specialized shipments, primarily here within the States. More and more I see perfectly packaged pallets (say that 5 times fast) leaving the company destined for unique projects in which we are proud to play a part. William Penn commented that wood is "a substance with soul". It is rewarding to perpetuate that soul.

Here at last and ready to go.... The new HORIZON eShop
|
Good things are worth waiting for.. and now, at last, the wait is over. Our customers have often asked for a simpler, more direct way to get their hands on HORIZON's wood. You are the first to see it here. HORIZON's eShop. This is the answer to a wood worker's basic wood needs - that single piece of a certain species you may be looking for to do a repair job, or a set of matching figure to inset in cabinet doors, or perhaps the perfect blocking for a set of legs.
The eShop is set up on a buy-it-now concept. We are posting our smaller volume inventories for your immediate purchase. Once you select the item (or items!) you want to buy you can complete the transaction online with your credit card or paypal. For these smaller items it is no longer necessary to call and inquire about prices or shipping costs. The eShop will answer all those questions just like any other eCommerce site.
The traditional "HORIZON online inventory" remains a fantastic tool for the woodworker who is pondering over choices of the larger volumes we have available. Because of the unique nature of our wood, and the high value of the larger sets, we remain convinced that there needs to be some dialog with our customers in order to insure we "get it right". Our online inventory, sometimes referred to as the online store, is not going to change.
The eShop is only focusing on small volumes. We urge you to continue to log onto our online store and make inquiries about our larger sets.
We aren't finished yet! As with all good things, the "tweaking" for improvements is a part of the process. For this test run, we are already recognizing that there are some less than perfect images. We are presently working on the installation of a photo studio complete with higher quality cameras so our photos are more clear and authentic reproductions of our material. We also anticipate a bit of a learning curve with our layout and processing. We really welcome any comments and/or suggestions you may have to improve our effort. Bear with us as we work thru the inevitable glitches that come with a project like this! And please, don't hesitate to let us know what you think! Customer Highlights ..... .....HORIZON's attention to detail helps an interested customer
| A testimony to HORIZON's thorough inventory tracking system......
Earlier this year we received an email inquiry from a gentleman in Germany. He had just taken possession of his new dining table. To quote his message, "Since Monday this week we are proud owners of our new dining table, custom-built from the gorgeous walnut wood from your stock. Our project was started when we selected the planks at the wholesaler nearby Frankfurt. Robert, our carpenter, built the dining table. The dimensions of the table are 75 x 39 x 30". After completion the walnut wood has been sealed two times with organic linseed. The harmonic grain of the walnut planks has been preserved. The dark walnut wood offers a nice contrast to our parquet floor made out of oak wood and the rest of our furniture." Obviously this message came from a man who know and loves his wood. His passion shines. He went on to inquire about the origin of his walnut, wanting to know where and when the trees were harvested. This information would finish, in his mind, the story of his table. Responding to his request proved to be a rather simple process. We asked if he could locate one of the barcoded tags that we adhere to each flitch we process. Luckily his carpenter had saved the tag. We were happy to be able to trace his flitch and provide him with the following details: "We were able to track back to the original log/tree purchase. Our records indicate this Walnut tree, as well as several others, in pack #6768 were growing in Wayne County, Ohio and cut at the end of May 2009. This forest tract was a private farm but the timber was under a management plan so only professionally marked trees were harvested. We personally have known the logger for many years and value his high reputation for quality workmanship. We purchased the logs on June 5th and these pieces were sawn here at our factory on June 9th. After cutting we steamed these planks for 80 hours to stabilize the color and dry kilned them until October 19, 2009. The particular tag number you gave me shows that this tree was graded by our staff as an A1 quality which indicates a superior log. It had been cut into 6 matching planks of 53mm thickness. I hope your carpenter was equally impressed." click to continue.......

and on a more personal note........ meet FLAVIA, our Italian intern
|
For the past couple of months HORIZON's office has been charmed by the presence of a pair of sparkling eyes and a delightful Italian accent. Being part of a family involved in the wood business, Flavia's connections led her to HORIZON. We happily welcomed her into our fold so she could polish her international business studies through an internship with us. A fifth year student in a University at Milan, Flavia originally hails from Naples, Italy. Life here in rural Northwest Pennsylvania has been a dramatic change from growing up and studying in bustling Italian cities. Perhaps the pace is a bit slower here, but for a curious young lady, there has been no shortage of things to explore. In a couple of action packed months Flavia has experienced the thrill of "jeeping" through our PA forests, had a glimpse of our natural Elk herd, done some hiking through our interesting rock formations and made a sojourn to New York City. Next on the agenda; a visit to Niagara Falls. She has easily fallen into our life style, having quickly befriended the owners of a local pizza parlor and a restaurant. She gives these folks an opportunity to practice their treasured native language. And all this says nothing about the amazing asset she has been to our office crew! She is a quick study in spite of the language differences. With a memory like a trap, she is able to master any task she is presented with and perform it efficiently. Flavia is a delight to have around. She takes on all of her assignments happily. We have been trying hard to find a way to snare her and keep her with us, but unfortunately, she will be returning to Italy at the end of November. We are delighted that Flavia has become more than a worker, we consider her a friend. We know we will remain in touch. So, we give a shout of THANKS to Flavia for continuing on with a job well done.
