HORIZON's Workbench Kits ....back by popular demand! |
Last fall, with the help of the editors of Popular Woodworking Magazine, HORIZON launched sales of our ASH workbench bundles. Based on the cut specs for any of three great designs, we gathered the wood needed to create the benches. All that is needed to complete the project is the hardware, the inspiration and the energy! The word is spreading and we continue to get requests for the bench kits. We are now offering them again...... Check the website for details. |

Comments on the Industry.... (or 'giving credit where credit is due')
|
Now that we have moved thru the first quarter of 2010, I find myself reflecting back on 2009 and
measuring up what sort of successes we had here at Horizon. I do feel that even in a globally lean year
we did have some real accomplishments. Although some were not as visible as
others, I surely don't want to miss recognizing any forward movement and
realizing who or what should be given credit. Things seem to have stabilized a bit in the
world's economy and we see our customers more eager to spend a little
money. They do expect perfection at competitive
prices and faster delivery, but they are coming back. Now if we can just get worldwide consumer spending
levels to a point where designers will initiate new styles, models and fashions
maybe we can get the Cherry boom started again.
I may be expecting too much short term.
Anyway, it does seem the financial industry has come into check to some degree, perhaps due to the help of our government supporting the banks and Wall Street. In the past the "risk managers" who drove investment and
spending seemed to think with all 'risk' and act with very little 'management'.
Credit had a pretty loose definition and was readily passed out to say the
least. Hopefully something was learned, but if nothing else we should recognize
these mistakes sooner next time around.

Customer Highlights ..... .....Pat Megowan - a long term user of HORIZON wood
|
Generally speaking, a happy ending is the result of a good
beginning. Several years ago, Pat Megowan, from, Corvalis, OR and a graduate of the College of the
Redwoods, discovered that by turning to HORIZON as a reliable source for wood, many of his projects get off to the best start possible. Pat has learned to trust HORIZON as a provider
of consistently high quality wood that has been carefully cut, gently dried and
safely packaged for shipment. Lots of
happy endings have resulted. Follow along for a snapshot view of one of Megowan's projects. From the log, to the sawn boule and flitches, to HORIZON's preparation for shipment, it is clear to see that this craftsman's project is off to a great start.
HORIZON takes pride in providing top-of-the-line specialty material. Our products are inspected and re-inspected many times throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the quality lives up to our high values. Once the wood goes through the final grading and evaluation it is bundled and prepared for shipment. Please connect to the link to see more photos of Megowan's work. He has a fine eye for detail and his own special way of working with curves and angles. (continue................................)

and on a more personal note........ Iceland's Volcano has a dramatic effect on our HORIZON! (.......Dan survived being "stuck" in Europe for 6 stressful days)
| Perhaps some of you have been wondering why Dan's responses to inquiries or emails are not holding up to his typical prompt style. It is NOT because he is getting lazy! Hopefully by the time this newsbrief gets published he will be back home and working hard to get caught up. A trade show in Poland, followed by a visit with HORIZON's representatives in the United Kingdom did not reach the comfortable conclusion we were all hoping for. Large red "FLIGHT CANCELLED" notices were about the only thing to be seen when Dan attempted to log onto the Delta website and print his boarding passes for his flight home way back on April 17. It seems the worst part of being delayed, re-scheduled and cancelled again and again was the total uncertainty of when it might end. He was luckier than some; never had to spend a night sleeping on an airport floor, never had to grovel for food. Finally, by snagging a ticket on the high-speed Eurostar train under the English Channel he was able to get to Paris and connect with a direct flight back to the States. A computer failure at the Paris airport caused the last bit of stress and an additional 2 hour delay before the plane finally took to the skies. Regardless, it was nearly a week of a very much unwanted extension to the trip. Believe it or not, Dan would have been a whole lot happier over here at Horizon, working hard to produce some really great wood. Many thanks are due to Pete for holding things together on this end and keeping production running smoothly. Not an easy task. Thanks also to our British counterparts, the great people at Thorogood Timber pic in Great Britian for helping Dan out in numerous ways during all the bedlam. Congrats to Dan - he is a survivor of the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Fallout!!!! |
