ASH from HORIZON A perfect choice for a high quality workbench. Build it yourself!
Why ASH??? The dense weight and natural stiffness symbolizing ASH make it a great wood of choice for a solid, firm, dependable workbench. Horizon's ASH has been carefully kiln dried, making its stability predictable.
The editors of "Popular Woodworking" and "Woodworking" magazines have embraced the opportunity to use HORIZON as a source of wood for promoting the building of workbenches. We invite you to take a look at the blog entry posted by Chris Schwarz, one of the Editors of Woodworking Magazine and the renown author of the book entitled "WORKBENCHES from design and theory to construction and use".
We are offering bundled ASH in sufficient dimensions and volumes to build any one of three different workbench designs. Each bundle will come complete with detailed photo illustrated instructions and plans. As an added bonus we are throwing in a copy of Chris Schwarz' book (a $30 value), with the Roubo and Holtzapffel models. Those people purchasing the 21st Century Workbench bundle will receive a copy of the DVD including specifics about building Robert Lang's modern day bench.
All 3 benches will be on display at the Woodworking in America Conference in Valley Forge, PA. Oct 2-4, 2009. Come on over, checkout the benches and choose your favorite. We will have the ASH bundles there ready for you to buy and carry home. Skip the shipping hassle! There will only be a limited number of bundles up for grabs at the conference, so call and reserve yours today; we'll be sure it's ready and waiting for you at the show! The Roubo
This workbench represents a very French design
from the 18th century. Noted for its ability to "support and hold the
work with little fuss", the Roubo has been a premier bench design with logical
features that still make sense for today's woodworkers. The thickness of the long top adds weight, as
well as provides strength to the base.
The stiffness resulting from the thick top makes it possible to avoid
the use of aprons. Any woodworker who has been frustrated by the challenges of
clamping their work can tell you how great an apron-free work surface can be!

The Holtzapffel
This 19th Century design is a "bit German, a bit French and entirely ingenious". As workbenches were tweaked over the years to create a quality design for efficient woodworking, the Holtzapffel represented the best of all worlds. It incorporates features from benches typical to several western European countries; from the French and German skeleton of the table to the massive Gallic legs and the Germain tail vise, tool tray and knock down bolts. It could be considered a "cultural mongrel". The end result is a well thought out table that even today provides an outstanding workplace for cabinetmakers.

21st Century
Studying years of 'trial and error' bench designs has provided Robert Lang with a
rich history of information regarding what works and what doesn't in the
creation of an efficient workbench. He
mastered the art of this hybrid design which "holds work any which way you want". Making use of tenons and dovetails, the 21st
Century workbench also provides a thick, sold and long worktop. Face and tail vises are only a couple of the
special features that make this design a woodworking dream. The gap in the worktop leaves space for tool trays or easy crosscutting and is this bench's identifying trait.
