Editorial Comments on the Industry.... (or other topics worth mentioning)
|
The dead of summer. The mid-summer months have traditionally been a quieter time at Horizon Wood, but this
year the word "dead" seems even more appropriate in terms of activity in the
wood market. Yet we push on, doing our
job as we know it and actually taking advantage of the time to get involved in
some exciting projects. We are
installing a completely new and larger biomass burning system for better production
of our energy needs, expanding our specialty
collection, and even trying our hand at "twittering". When
we look around the industry and realize the hardships many are experiencing I
must say we at Horizon should consider ourselves fortunate. (continue...........)

Customer Showcase - FLUTED BEAMS, LLC
|
At HORIZON one of the things that excites us is
innovation. Using our wood in unique and
unpredictable ways is a challenge that brings new interest to the
business. Chris Mroz and his company,
FLUTED BEAMS, is tough to top in the innovation arena. We have been supplying Chris with wood for
several years, and are astounded by what he does with it. Typically our American hardwood species like
Cherry, Walnut, and Oak are known for their stability and straightness of
grain. Woodworkers strive to maintain
the perfectly flat, solid nature of the medium.
Along comes Fluted Beams - unafraid to experiment, curious to stretch
our wood to the limit, they have mastered the art of wood bending. Unbelievable bending. Bending and shaping into fluid, pleasing,
mind-teasing forms.
Regarding his
relationship with Horizon, Mroz says, "Horizon
Wood Products has been able to fill my special needs for the clear hardwoods I
buy for my Extreme Wood Bending™ operations. They are one of the few companies
that took the time to visit my site and understand the unique wood needs I
have. Certain defects will not bend well. Horizon understands more than anyone out there
that I've worked with, what to supply. I
don't have to inspect it to know its right before it ships. In addition, Dan
Terbovich has been helpful with my experimentation of new bending species and
as a result of his suggestion, in addition to the 10 species I already work
with, Sassafras is looking like a good candidate for Extreme Bending."
Mroz's ability to bend wood has even had an impact on the musical world. People are taking note. The sound of a new, solid wood drum is has, "...orchestral like sensitivity, a warm dry fundamental and a piercing rim shot". Take a look - Horizon provided the walnut and maple in these snare drum shells.
Horizon is happy to be a part of Mroz's innovative ideas. We encourage you to spend some time exploring the Fluted Beams website. We think you'll enjoy it.

Thos. Moser Cabinetmaker and Horizon team up...resulting in a super satisfied customer
|
Good things happen when like-minded companies work together to create a spectacular project. After years of observing the Thos. Moser company's practices and product lines, we have made a connection. The customer personally selected his wood from HORIZON's offerings. Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers used our material and their design, with input from the customer, to create yet another heirloom piece. The results are superb! Stay tuned for more details in the next issue of our newsletter.
|
and on a more personal note........ we are proud to introduce the new MR. and MRS. Dan Terbovich!
|
After raising 3 sons, the Terbovichs are delighted to welcome a daughter into the fold. Krystle is a charming addition to the family. We look forward to all the wonderful things a marriage can bring. The outdoor wedding on June 20th was a memorable event.... being up to our ankles in mud only added to the fun! HORIZON wishes the best of everything to our bride and groom. We couldn't be more proud.
