Big Leaf Maple -

Great figure from the west coast!

We had the good fortune of connecting with a source of fantastic quilted maple.  The figure in this wood is so intense it seems surreal, like peaks and valleys on a topomap.  It's often used for musical instrument stock, but it could make some incredible accent pieces on your special project.

Be among the first to find our new quilted maple postings on our online store!  Wow.
The Leader's Letter
George Terbovich
It gives me a real sense of pride to write this letter introducing our most recent project here at Horizon Wood Products, our "News from the Horizon" series.   No doubt this past year has been a tough one for most everyone in the wood business.  We are no exception.   Most companies struggled to control losses as domestic prices fell, banking collapsed, buying power and incentive evaporated.  It appears we are not out of the soup yet.  But in the hardy American spirit we press on with determination! continue........

FINE WOODWORKING Magazine visits HORIZON to learn what makes good wood!
Fine WW Logo We've all fallen victim to the simplicity of going to the grocery store and picking up a pound of hamburger without giving a thought to all the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into its final presentation in the butcher case. The same innocence often goes into the process of buying wood or lumber. What happens after the tree is harvested? What is the magic of the milling process, the secret of careful dry kilning, or the environmental consciousness of the wood producer?  What is the process of getting the wood from log to consumer?

The esteemed Fine Woodworking magazine was seeking answers to these questions.  They turned to the team that knows.  They turned to HORIZON!  A couple of years back they visited Horizon Wood Products with their cameras and crew. They probed around, they questioned, they looked, listened and learned and they video taped it all!  Horizon was the feature video of their on-line magazine and we are still gracing the pages of their web network.  We urge you to follow the link, sit back and get the inside look and feel of Horizon Wood Products and our philosophy.  Visit the virtual view of Horizon.  We believe you will like what you see. "LUMBERJACK" - worst job ranking????
This Idaho logger tells the story straight.  How do you want to LIVE your life?
chain saw on log
While reading the pages of one of the many popular woodworker trade journals printed today we were surprised to find an article describing just how bad the job of a "lumberjack" really is.  Hmmmm.  We know lots of those good people,. We know how skilled they are at their jobs and how seriously they take their responsibilities for the care of our forests.  We also know how dedicated they are to their work.  We wanted to cheer out loud when we read, in the next issue, one logger's rebuttal to the article.  We tracked the guy down and got his permission to reprint his "letter to the editor" in our newsletter.....and had a mighty good time sharing our tales as well as our thoughts with him in the process. Please read on, and judge for yourself what a logger's world is really like.  Many thanks to Patrick Hanes for allowing us to share his wise words with you.
