Information for this course will be pulled heavily from Contemporary Jeet Kune Do (Elements of the C-JKD system have been taught to SEAL Team 6 and numerous federal agencies) and HapKiDo (The art taught to the Korean Presidential Body Guards and numerous law enforcement agencies world wide).  There will also be movements that can be found in traditional Taekwon-Do (the world's most popular martial art - often called Korean "Karate") as well as Tai Chi (a gentle and relaxing system of exercise and defense).

The course will be overseen by Master Monty Hendrix and Master Ellen Hendrix. Monty Hendrix is the United State's East Coast Director for Contemporary Jeet Kune Do AND for the World HapKiDo Association. He has trained Master Ellen extensively in the techniques of this course.  Ellen is an apprentice instructor in C-JKD, an advanced teacher in Tai Chi and a 4th Degree Black Belt Master in Taekwon-Do.

- "Talk is cheap" but saying the right thing could save your life:
How to use your voice to possibly avoid a life threatening situation before it becomes physical.

Advice:
  • Try NOT to let someone stop you.  If you must say something, just say something along the lines of, "So sorry, I can't stop right now. I'm meeting my husband and point straight ahead as you keep walking."
  • Whatever you say should be used to help you gain distance from the individual in question. DISTANCE IS YOUR FRIEND.
  • If you are corned. Use a commanding voice and tell the attacker to "Get away from me or I will start screaming".
  • If you have your phone in your hand, consider having the police on speed dial so you can hit the button and then say, "I've called the police and they are on their way to the WAL-MART parking lot on Wendover." Say your location loudly. ..."And they are looking for a tall man with a Green shirt and 1970's mustache." Say the assailant's description loudly.
  • If they come toward you, smash them in the face with your phone just like you would with the palm of your hand.

- What to tell your children to do in case you are attacked while they are with you.

Advice:
  • Have a self defense plan that your kids are completely aware.
  • For example, make sure they know if you are threatened, they should immediately get in the car and start blowing the horn
  • OR if you are parked close to a store, they should start screaming and go in the store and start yelling, "someone is hurting my mommie. HELP. HELP."
  • AT NO TIME should they get between you and the attacker!
  • You should be between the attacker and your children and your elbow (porcupine concept) should be between you and the attacker!

- How to attack the 3 most sensitive areas of the human body (3 circle theory) in order to escape most grabs.

Notes:

  • Eyes
  • Nose
  • Testicles

The easiest way to hit a man in the crotch.
  • Knee him.

The easiest way to way to break a man's nose.
  • Palm thrust.

- The three easiest ways to blind a man.

  • Palm him in the nose.
  • Fingers to the eyes in a crossing motion.
  • thumbs to the eyes.

- How to shield your body when under an attack and then "blast" an attacker 4 times in one second.

  • Be sure you are in an athletic posture with your knees flexed like a cat ready to pounce! NOW, protect your face and body by shielding with your elbows.  Always return your elbow in front of your face as soon as possible.  Protecting your head is the most important thing!
  • Shield your legs and groin area from strikes by lifting your knees.
In other words, be like a Porcupine! Every time an attack comes at you, that attack runs into a sharp elbow or knee.  Your elbows and your knees are your SHIELDS and your QUILLS!
Porcupine

That little porcupine is so cute!  Unless you try to bite him....

Oh no he didn't...

Ouch!

  • At your first opportunity, Blast the attacker repeatedly with rapid palm thrusts. Be sure you are using your legs to drive forward --- RUN OVER THEM if you can! With practice you can hit 4 times in a split second.
  • Shielding with your elbows and knees is very painful to the attacker and can open them up for your repeat palm blast.  But again, you do not have to wait until you have shielded to blast them. If an attacker moves toward you and you can BLAST them BEFORE they attack - GO FOR IT!

BONUS: Keeping your elbows up and between you and an attacker while keeping your kids behind you gives your children a double layer of protection !!!

- How to stop a tackle

  • Stick your shielding forearm right into their shoulder to help stop them. Be sure you step one leg back to help maintain your balance. Naturally you are better off to dodge out of the way if someone tries to tackle you but you simply may not be given time to do so.

- How to get free from a throat grab when you are on your back.

  • If the attacker is in between your legs and grabs your throat: Strike down on their elbow joints to relieve pressure from your neck. Gouge their eyes with your thumbs and claw their face.  Try to create some space between you and the attacker by scooting away. However the attacker might give you space once you thumb him in the eyes. Then use your feet to kick them away. Kick into their: groin, hips or body.  If the attacker won't back down then continue to gouge his eyes and claw his face!!!

  • NOTE: Wrapping your legs around them will keep them from just hopping over on top of you and straddling you and can also help keep them from pulling your pants off. However, you would unwrap your legs when the attacker pulls away from your eye gouge so that you can kick them away.

  • If the attacker is straddling you and they choke you:

  • Strike down on their elbow joints to relieve pressure from your neck.  Keep a hold on their arms so they can't use them. Immediately,  bend your legs and use your hips to "buck/bridge" them forward and to the side in order to roll them off of you.  Be sure you hold down on their arms while bucking them over or they will stick their hand out like a kick stand and stop you from rolling them over.
  • NOTE: It is best to not get knocked or thrown down or to let someone climb on you if you are knocked down. Remember, be like a cat that can not be put into a bag! It's impossible to put a cat in a bag and you should try to make it impossible for someone to put you on the ground! Be like that cat... Don't go down with out a fight! Twist, gouge, knee, palm strike, claw and move!!!  Don't get contained if you can help it!!!  If you get knocked down --- GET UP - FIGHT BACK - GET AWAY !!!
Don't mess with this cat
You think it would be easy to hold this little guy down?  Think again!

- How to break out of a Bear Hug when your arms are pinned (front & rear)

  • In either scenario, thrust your arms forward and your hips back powerfully in order to make yourself much larger! If the attacker is behind you, consider smashing him in the groin first with a hammering type blow with your fist.
  • ** See video #1 & #2 at the end of this block as a coaching tool.
  • If he is in front , put your hands on the front of his hips and knee him 1-10x in the groin. :) then break out by thrusting you hips back and your hands forward into his hips.  Again make yourself as BIG as possible!

- How to break out of a Body lock (front & rear)

  • In this scenario the attacker has grabbed your body by going under your arms. So your arms are free to strike!!! If he is behind you then smash his face with rear elbows. If he is in the front use your thumbs into his eyes and claw his face!

- A simple way to release a grip around your neck. (front and Rear)
  •  From the front, simply step back and swing your arm over theirs , using your armpit to pop their arms off your neck. Note: step back with the left foot and swing over with the right arm!
  • From the rear you do the same thing but step back and across with your right foot and swing over with your right arm.
  • NOTE: Now get away or blast them with repeat palms!
  • * See video #1 at the end of this block as a coaching tool.

- How to escape if both your arms are grabbed from the front.

  • Knee them in the groin. Clap your hands together and step back, pulling your arms straight up through the weak area of their grip where their thumbs meet their other fingers.

- How to escape if one arm is grabbed from the front.

  • Whether they grab you cross handed or straight handed, simply hit them in the : Eyes, Nose or Groin, then circle your hand around to break free from the grip. If circling in one direction doesn't work then circle the other way.  Hit them as needed!
- Bonus: If they grab you in a head lock from the: Front, side or rear:
  • They will have your head next to their body and be lifting up on your head: Simply grab around their body and BITE them. Lock the bite down for a few seconds so the pain sets in and then when they push you off of them ,you are free!   Either run or attack!

  • If they grab around your neck from behind with their arm (rear strangle hold) then you should grab their arm like you are doing a chin up and pull down on their arm to relieve some of the pressure on your neck while dropping your chin to your chest (to help keep the choke from getting directly on your neck). Keep holding onto their arm and then bite their arm to encourage them to let go.  NOTE:  If they start out by reaching their arm across your face (rear head lock) instead of your neck then got straight to the bite!   Then either get away or go on the attack! ** See video #2 below as an example of this!

*Video #1:  (Click Here) for an example of breaking out of the front throat grab and also an example of breaking out of the rear bear hug where your arms are pinned.

**Video #2: (Click Here) for an example of biting against a rear head lock/strangle hold and also an example of breaking out of the rear bear hug where your arms are pinned.

A Question that came up at a past  Women's Survival course:
School Logo-TM

1. What should I do if attacked and my arms are full of groceries?

Advice:
  • Throw the groceries at the attacker and then ESCAPE. If escape is not possible then go on the offensive attacking with repeat palms to the face and/or attacking their eyes, nose and groin.  You are A PIT BULL - A RATTLE SNAKE - A  MEAN NASTY BADGER with RABIES!
  • You don't have to be big to be ferocious!!!  You have it in you to be a self defense machine !  The human body is built for combat.
