8-10-2010. Just returned from assistant teaching and training at the World HapKiDo Association's Summer Camp in Altamone Springs, Fl. It was an incredible event. Special Guests were Grand Master Hwang In-Shik(www.eaglehapkido.com) and my instructor the WHA President, Grand Master Jung Tae (www.worldhapkido.com) . These men are second to none in the HapKiDo world. You might remember GM Hwang from movies with Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee! I was especially honored to be promoted to the United States East Coast Director for the World Hakido Association at the annual summer banquet. This is an incredible personal honor b/c the WHA has so many talented and sincere martial artist on the East Coast and around the world!
7-19-2010. Returning from assistant teaching and training at the Unified International Taekwon-Do Federation's (www.unified-itf.com) annual summer camp. I had the unique honor of getting to work with a group from Ghana, Africa as well as judging multiple competitions. There was a lot of talent at this event. The event is hosted each year by my instructor Grand Master K.S. Hwang (K-9-1) who was the 2nd of only five men to ever be promoted to Grand Master by the late founder of ITF Taekwon-Do - General Choi. It is an honor to me to hold the highest ranking American black belt certificate of all active U-ITF members (certificate number A-7-2, meaning the 2nd American 7th Degree promoted in U-ITF. Note: A-7-1 is no longer active in the U-ITF).
6-7-2010. Just returned from Progressive Fighting System's Training Summit in Contemporary Jeet Kune Do and Philippine Martial Arts at Lake Isabella in California. The training was fast paced and intense. The Summit is hosted by PFS founder and my Jeet Kune Do instructor, Paul Vunak (www.fighting.net) . It was a great honor to receive my Full Instructor Certificate at the camp in Contemporary Jeet Kune Do and Philippine Martial Arts which I had earned at Sigund Vunak's place in California in May. I was also honored with earning an Advanced Law Enforcement and Edged Weapons 2 Instructor Certification at the Summit.
5-10-2010. Just returned from California and training with world famous Paul Vunak privately for a couple days in Philippine Martial Arts and Jeet Kune Do. The training really felt natural as Vu and Jeet Kune Do combine so much of the techniques I've been working extensively on including: Philippine Martial Arts, Wing Chun, Kick Boxing movements and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I was honored and suprised to be promoted by Vu to Full Instructor in his Progressive Fighting System Organization in Contemporary Jeet Kune Do and Philippine Martial Arts.
Feb. 5th, 2010, I was very honored to have the opportunity to test for my HapKiDo 4th Degree Master with the World HapKiDo Association. The test was grueling and it was compounded by the super high altitude at the test site (Denver, Colorado).
Jan. 2010 Just traveled to Atlantic City, NJ to be inducted into the Action Martial Arts Magazine Hall of Fame/Honors.
Jan. 2010 Just returned from Los Angeles teaching a self defense seminar at World Karate Center and conducting WKC owner Doug Granzow's 5th Degree Black Belt test. Master Granzow did outstanding. As a bonus for me on this trip, Grand Master Tae Jung, World HapKiDo Assoc. President was gracious enough to train me in Hap Ki Do during this trip as well.
Jan. 2010 I was honored to be a guest tournament judge in Clemmons, NC at Metro Matial Arts.
Dec. 2009, Just returned from teaching a HapKiDo seminar at Han Ho Martial Arts in New York.
Dec. 2009 Just traveled to Thousand Oaks, CA to train HapKiDo with WHA President Master Tae Jung. In my "free time" I participated in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes with JJ Machado and Wing Chun Classes with Hawkins Cheung.
Nov. 2009 Just returned from Nebraska, were I was tested and promoted to Lakan Balck Belt in Philippine Combatives by system Founder Julius Melegrito. |

Taekwon-Do Tip of the Month
|
Half Facing Position in an L Stance with Guarding Block.
This position is found in Tul after tul. The mistake we commonly see is the student standing at "side facing" instead of half facing and also following the arms through too far. This type of mistake will put unneeded stress on the shoulders. Remember, your rear shoulder, your front shoulder and your hand should form an imaginary triangle. Train hard! |
|
HapKiDo Tip of the Month:
|
Throwing:
Remember you will rarely attempt to throw a static/balanced opponent. You must move them or rather shift them so their body weight and movment aid in the throw rather than counter balance your throw.
|
|
Jeet Kune Do and Philippine Martial Arts Tip of the Month |

When chain punching or straight blasting, if the opponent throws their hands up then this will trigger our trapping abilities found both within Philippine training and classical Jeet Kune Do training. JKD orignally pulled trapping from Wing Chun, however in Contemporary JKD we may use a Wing Chun based movement to move the attackers guarding hand. Another option we might use is a Muay Thai swim motion to go around their blocking hands and gain a head/neck clinch as we thumb the eyes or we may possibly go under their arms to a body clinch for a trip if we found it necessary to transition to the ground. It just depends on how the attacker positions their defenses. Regardless the attacker has thrown their arms up and put us into trapping range! They will soon find that this will not deter a student of JKD and PMA.
