Skatepark Master Plan
Skateboarders
The City of Arlington has selected a consulting team to assist with the development of a citywide skate system master plan. To begin the public involvement process, the team will hold three open house workshops in different areas of the city this week.

These meetings will be informative and interactive, providing the public with the vision of what a system of skate facilities spread throughout the community would look like. The workshops will provide citizens with the opportunity to voice opinions on what kind of facilities need to be built in Arlington, as well as what locations make the most sense.

Meetings will be held:

Wednesday, June 9, 6-8pm, Lamar High School, 1400 W. Lamar

Thursday, June 10, 6-8pm at Boles Junior High School, 3900 SW Green Oaks

Saturday, June 12, 11am-1pm at Bob Duncan Center, 2800 S. Center

Elzie Odom Athletic Center?

athletic centerNew name...same great youth and adult athletic programs! On May 18, 2010, the Arlington City Council approved the name change of Elzie Odom Recreation Center to Elzie Odom Athletic Center.

"Elzie Odom Athletic Center has always served as the home base for our city's youth and adult sports programs," said Wendy Parker, Parks and Recreation Athletics Program Manager. "Since opening over 10 years ago, our center has emphasized youth and adult sports and we felt our name should reflect that," she said.

Elzie Odom opened to the public in April 1999 and has historically operated and been viewed by the community as a facility distinctive from other recreation centers due to its focus on athletics. In 2008 over 3,300 youth registered at the center for sports programs, 243 adult sports teams registered for league play and 3,800 people participated in fitness and athletic instruction.

For youth, Elzie Odom Athletic Center offers baseball, basketball, cheerleading, in-line hockey, soccer and volleyball. The adult sports programs include basketball, flag football, in-line hockey, softball and volleyball. Center features include a large work-out facility, indoor track, rock climbing wall, skating arena and two full size gyms.

The US Open National Playoffs begins with 16 sectional qualifying tournaments held throughout the country from April through June. The men's and women's champions from each of the sectional qualifying tournaments advance to the US Open National Playoffs this summer.

"The US Open National Playoffs makes the US Open 'open,' where one woman and one man will earn a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament and a chance to advance to the main draw," said Lucy Garvin, Chairman of the Board and President, USTA. The USTA Texas selected Arlington Tennis Center to host the US Open National Playoff event in Texas June 21-26.

Entry fee for the sectional qualifying tournaments is $125, and is open to all eligible players aged 14 or older. Players must have a current USTA membership valid through August 30, 2010. Each sectional qualifying tournament is limited to 256 players, and players will not be seeded.
