Ribbon Cutting for Parkway Central Improvements
Parkway Central Park Pavilion

A ribbon-cutting will be held at Parkway Central Park at 6 pm on Thursday, September 17 to celebrate recent improvements to the park. The spotlight of the project is the Bell Pavilion, which was made possible by a gift from the Richard McCree family in honor of Margaret and Hal Bell.

The improvements include a new pavilion, the demolition of the old tennis courts to allow for the open space and a new performance platform, and garden, additional concrete trail, improvements to the playground, additional lighting and a new drinking fountain. The cast stone artwork on the columns of the pavilion was done by local artist, Tom Finn.

The improvements were funded with $300,000 in CDBG funding, a park partners matching grant, and private donations from individuals and "Friends of Parkway Central."

The park is located at 600 VanBuren Drive in north Arlington.

Movies in the Park

Grab a blanket, some lawn chairs, a picnic basket and the kids and head out to Veterans Park, 3600 W. Arknasas Lane,  to enjoy the family friendly movie, How to Eat Fried Worms. The movie will play at dusk on September 25. Admission is free. Limited concessions will be available.

The movie based on the best-selling children's book. Billy is an 11-year-old boy whose folks have just moved to a new town and is facing the terror of his first day at a new school. It doesn't take long for him to run afoul of Joe, the school bully, who finds the live bait Billy brought with him and throws it in his face, asking Billy if he eats worms for lunch. Billy tries to gross out Joe by saying yes, he eats worms on a regular basis, and Joe calls his bluff by challenging him to eat ten worms in front of the student body. Billy takes the bet, and suddenly becomes something of a celebrity at school as the first kid to stand up to Joe. But, can he actually eat the worms without losing his lunch?
