ADVOCACY ALERT! Make the Call to Save Services to Children STATE: Call your representative TODAY to save Home Visiting & Child and Family Trust Fund
We've heard rumors that there may be a budget agreement this week - and we need you to help ensure that Healthy Families New York and the NYS William B. Hoyt Memorial Children and Family Trust are not left out! CLICK HERE for more information.
Tell your Legislators: - Support restoration of funding for Healthy Families New York and the Hoyt Memorial Children and Family Trust Fund in the Human Services budget!
- Make child abuse prevention a priority. Nearly a third of all home visiting programs have closed, or will be closing shortly - and potentially all will close if no budget is passed by August.
- Secure New York's ability to access approximately $100 to $150 million of new federal funding for home visitation over five years by maintaining State funding of Healthy Families.
- Maintain funding for Advantage After-School and other important children's programs.

FEDERAL: Call your senator TODAY - Child health and other services need your support
There are many important provisions in the jobs/extenders bill (H.R. 4213) for children and families: emergency funding for states to create jobs or to help stabilize families suffering a job loss, the extension of unemployment insurance, and a summer jobs programs for youth.
In its bill, the Senate includes $24 billion to enhance federal Medicaid matching funds (FMAP) to provide health care and child welfare services for children. But the outcome is not certain at this point. Unless the Senate approves the Reid amendment, states will not receive additional much needed dollars. CLICK HERE for more information.
Call your senator's office: - Tell your senators that their first priority in the jobs/extenders bill (H.R. 4213) should be children and families
- Tell your senators that a 6-month extension of FMAP must be included in the jobs/extenders bill or states may be forced to cut health care and other services for children in low-income families
- Tell your senators to oppose any amendments to the jobs/extenders bill that may weaken FMAP

UPDATE
Action4Kids - Response to Commissioner Mahon's Editorial
As child advocates, we were very disappointed to
read the recent
LoHud Community View by DSS Commissioner Kevin Mahon. (June 6, 2010). The
Commissioner argues that subsidies to child care are just too expensive, that
the Astorino administration's deep cuts to subsidies pose little hardship to
working families, and that these cuts are necessary to balance the County's
budget. All of these assertions are wrong. CLICK HERE to read more and comment. CLICK HERE to visit the County Board of Legislators.
