FROM THE DESK OF THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Congratulating and Celebrating The Grammar School Graduating Class of 2012!

The Grammar School Eighth Grade Class of 2012 is made up of a diverse group of students who have made significant contributions to the school community and beyond. This class is comprised of students who have achieved accolades for their academics, athletics, visual and performing arts, as well as their service to their school and the greater community. Their individual interests, talents, and accomplishments are too many to mention here, but I assure you they are part of a very special class, and we will miss them. They have learned how to be confident and resilient. They are imaginative and creative. These young adults appreciate and have retained the joy of wonder, the excitement of discovery,  and the satisfaction of understanding. They are graduating with the ability to think for themselves and to advocate for themselves.

I would like to thank each and every one of our parents, grandparents, and friends for supporting these young people in so many different ways! I also would like to thank our faculty and staff, who, as one of our 8th grade parents so aptly said, "have touched the lives of these children over the years. Be it academics, sports, arts, field trips, or a friendly hello, the  dedication, care, and guidance of our faculty and staff have made a difference in the lives of our graduates."

Congratulations to the The Grammar School graduating class of 2012.

REPORT FROM THE STROLL
Well, it was a little moist, but it was fun! Approximately 25 TGS students and their parents marched in the Strolling of the Heifer parade. We carried beautiful signs with our favorite healthy fruits and vegetables (thanks William!) and a beautiful new banner, wore new orange
Tshirts, and handed out friendship bracelets to kids on the parade route. On the Retreat lawn our marketing efforts were compromised by the weather, but there were delicious crepes and a very popular edition this year - Zach Caldwell's espresso machine was kicking out the warm drinks to a grateful clientele! Many thanks to Zach, William, Eric Aho, Chuck Hornsby, Camilla Tarmy and all the chaperoning parents who braved the elements. And a SPECIAL SHOUT OUT to the second grade - who led the way with 100% participation!

Board of Trustees Election Results

On May 22, 2012 The Grammar School Board of Trustees held its annual election of officers. The following trustees were elected unanimously:
  • Board Chair - Ray Hutchins (current parent)
  • Vice Chair - Regina Rockefeller (former parent)
  • Treasurer - Bill Helm (grandparent)
  • Clerk - Wendy Brennan  (current parent)
A second three year term was also voted for Ray Hutchins.

Other members of the Board of Trustees include:
  • Peter Howe (former parent)
  • Marcia Leader (former administrator)
  • Natalie Thomson (current parent)
  • Maggie Smith (former faculty)
  • Julie Burns (current parent)
The trustees would like to recognize and thank Kimona Alin and Mark Long whose terms will end on June 30, 2012. Kimona has worked tirelessly on the Buildings and Grounds Committee. In addition, Mark has been very successful in many challenging tasks in relation to the Personnel and Policies Committee. As you may know, trustees are volunteers who donate a large amount of their time and talents to help ensure the future stability and success of TGS. It is a responsibility that no trustee takes lightly. Thank you again, Kimona and Mark!

Floral Appeal From The Eighth Grade
As the Persian Proverb would have it: "The world is a flower. Smell it, and then pass it on to others."

Just what we would love for any and all of you with blooming gardens to do on the morning of June 15, graduation day at TGS. Your floral offerings will be arrayed as profusely as possible and permissible all around the auditorium, so that no florid language need be spoken as part of that afternoon's celebration.

Please let us know via email (ohauert@aol.com) about your willingness and ability to provide the raw material for us eighth grade parents to express our inner florist as we put our mettle to the petal.

Thanks,

Doris and Francis Hauert
LIBRARY NOTES

All library books are now due in the library

The school year seems to be rushing to an end! Library overdue notices have been distributed, and while we do not charge fines, a reimbursement fee must be paid for all lost library books. Please search for those books. Books (even ones you forgot to check out) turn up in the strangest places...in the car, in closets, under beds, even on your bookshelves. Prompt return of your books helps the library.

Thanks, Ponnie

Summer Reading Lists

Summer Reading lists and teacher notes explaining expectations for those entering grades 2-8 in the fall will be posted on our TGS website soon. Encourage your children to continue reading all summer. It's entertaining and helps students retain the skills they have acquired during the year.

And parents, what have you been reading? Contribute your recommendations to the TGS adult summer reading list! We promise no reports will be due in the fall. This is just for fun. Summer's a great time to read for pleasure or to learn something new, so all genres are welcome.   Please send your suggestions along to me via email. And remember, children who see their parents read are more likely to value reading themselves.

Thanks, Ponnie

Charlie Boswell and Mary Heller Osgood invite you and your family to an evening of good fun and outdoor brick oven baked pizza on Tuesday, July 10 at Orchard Hill Breadworks, Alstead, NH, 6:30-8:30pm. Proceeds benefit The Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital.

Mary Heller Osgood and I have signed up at partners in this year's Prouty Ultimate, Northern New England's largest benefit sports event. We have pledged to raise $5,000 for The Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital. We're committed to this pledge and to participating in a two-day two hundred mile bike ride in honor of friends and family afflicted by cancer.

We hope you'll join us on Tuesday, July 10 at the Orchard Hill Breadworks in Alstead, NH for an outdoor brick oven pizza benefit dinner event. Admission to the event is by donation and will be directed to NCCC.

Bring the essentials of a picnic dinner minus the main course. Make your own pizza and have it cooked in the Orchard Hill Breadworks brick oven. Pizza dough, sauce, cheese and toppings will be available. You're also invited to bring your favorite toppings. Go all out. Bring a picnic blanket and folding chairs or enjoy the company of others at communal picnic tables. BYOB
