Dear Parents,
By consensus, this year's dinner auction will again take place at TGS. Special attention has been given to transform the auditorium into a lovely, magical setting for this second and final parent-driven fundraiser of the 2011-2012 school year. Many thanks to all Class Parents who have been communicating with your class to provide information on class projects and the specific assignments each class has for the event:
- Pre-K & Kindergarten = Decorations;
- 1st & 2nd = Appetizers;
- 3rd & 4th = Bar/Beverages;
- 5th = Silent Auction set-up;
- 7th = Event clean-up;
- 8th = Event set-up.
Please contact your Class parent to offer your assistance with the class project and assignment.
Event Schedule
- 6:00 PM: Cocktails, Live Music, Social Hour, Silent Auction cont'd (opens at noon)
- 7:00 PM: Catered, Sit-Down Dinner
- 8:00 PM: Live Auction
We hope everyone can come and enjoy this fun and social evening, as well as a fundraiser! Please come and join fellow parents, faculty and staff in celebration everyone's efforts and support of TGS. Although this is basically an adult event, if attendance is dependent upon childcare coverage, arrangements may be made possible. Please note: Childcare reservations must be received by Thursday morning, May 17th.
A good number of our friends from the surrounding community have also been invited to join us for the evening. Tickets are $30 per person and can be reserved by calling Pauline @ TGS or can be purchased at the door. Please call or email your RSVP as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or an item or service to donate to the auction (thank you!), please contact Alyson Opsahl or Nancy Brooks with your information. For any additional information, please contact me, pobrien@thegrammarschool.org or 802-387-5364, ext. 106.
Best regards,
Pauline

William shows photos of the Maasai
|
Global Education Theme and Fundraiser What a glorious day! This past Tuesday we had the culminating activities of our Global Education Theme for the year. After months of studying the Maasai Culture and the countries of Tanzania and Kenya, we had several important visitors yesterday: William, a Maasai warrior from Kenya, Dr. Steven and his wife Agnes and young daughter from Tanzania, and Sarah Messenger, Leyeyo's American mother. William presented to all the students about life as a Maasai and a Kenyan. Dr. Steven received from a check for $1,800 for student scholarships, from money raised by The Grammar School students. This significant donation for children of Longido, Tanzania (Leyeyo's village), will pay for 18 one year scholarships or 4 four year scholarships for students to attend public high schools in Tanzania. Thank you to parents, students, and faculty for this tremendous effort and great life lesson.
The Spring Event You will want to be at this fun event. Eat, drink, be merry, and spend some money. With a fundraising goal of $20,000, which goes toward student programs, activities, and scholarships, this is a very important and fun event. Bring your friends, relatives, and your wallets. See you Friday night in the auditorium here at TGS.
New Spanish Teacher at TGS I would like to announce the hiring of Liz Jackson as The Grammar School's new teacher of Spanish for our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. As you may know, after helping to develop and successfully launching our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Spanish Program two years ago, Susan Madrigan is leaving to spend more time with her family. Liz Jackson's past experiences teaching abroad and in the U.S., her history of putting together rich travel opportunities, and her extensive personal education, leave me with no doubt that we have hired an enthusiastic, dynamic, and resourceful teacher with genuine interest in students' cognitive and social growth. Liz has a strong passion for the Spanish language and culture that helps motivate and inspire students of all ages. She creates a fun, relaxed, and challenging learning environment and fosters quality relationships with students. Currently, Liz, her son Nathaniel, and husband Ari are members of the TGS community and next year we will welcome her son Asher as well.

TGS and the Strolling Heifers
| This year's "Strolling of the Heifers" parade will be on June 2 in Brattleboro. Once again TGS students will march in the parade to represent the school, and show our presence in the community. Following last year's success, after the parade TGS will have a booth on the Retreat lawn where we will have marketing materials for the school and sell crepes!
The parade is the signature event of a weekend of farm and food friendly activity that some estimate draws 50,000 people to the Brattleboro area. It is a great thing to be a part of, and important for TGS to have a presence. We are still working on a theme for our participation, ("Healthy food makes great kids?") and William will help with a creative project for kids to make. We will have T-shirts for all "Strollers" to wear.
Details on location to meet, exact timing, and other logistics will come later, but it has generally been on Flat Street at 9:00, and the parade is done by 10:30 at the Retreat.
We will need some parent chaperones to walk with the students and carry a school banner and we are still finalizing the help we will need on the retreat lawn, manning our booth and cooking crepes. Contact Michael Hornsby (mhornsby@brimstoneconsulting.com) if you are interested in joining in. |

The 5k is a non-competitive, family-friendly event where everyone is a winner! We invite you to join us as participants or cheerers! Participating is $20 for adults and $10 for students. CHEERING IS FREE! All participants are encouraged to move at their own pace. Walking is okay! And strollers are okay, too! Please leave the pooches at home though.

ANNUAL FUND 2012 UPDATE
|
Thank you to all who have generously contributed to this year's Annual Fund. We have reached a total of $65,000, which is nearing 2/3 of our $100,000 goal! Please help us keep this great momentum going by encouraging members of our community who have not yet given to make an Annual Fund contribution. We have 100% participation from our Board and hope to reach the same percentage rate with parents, staff, and faculty.

Hi TGS students and families! My name is Emma Straus, I graduated from TGS in 2008, and am searching for somebody to lease my horse while I'm at college. He is a black quarter-horse, somewhere around 17 years old, and is named Tucker. He is very sweet and affectionate. Since he was injured during his competitive jumping career many years ago, he is best suited for light riding-a few days a week is plenty. I'm looking for an intermediate rider who would like to have a horse to ride lightly on trail rides and sometimes in a ring. He currently lives in Putney at my good friend's house and I'm sure he could stay there if those arrangements are needed/wanted. If you are interested, please give me a call. Dear Friends and Patrons,We have revisited, rethought, and re-launched our proposal. At the risk of becoming email pests, we appeal to you once again, and sincerely thank all of you who pledged on our first effort. We are moving more carefully and have reduced the sum we are hoping to raise.
The video is the same, but the Faustian wheels have never ceased turning, we hope that you will take the time to see the updates as they appear.
We are producing a mixed media marionette show inspired by Goethe's Faust called The Green Gold Tree. The Bluebird Theater has been working on this piece for the past 8 months and would like to ask for your help to see it through to completion. The show features marionettes, shadow puppets, magic lantern slides, by Julia Zanes and original music, performed live by Donald Saaf and the Bluebird Orchestra. Julia has been working with the artist Michele Ratte, who has printed the puppet's costumes with real gold leaf.
The Green Gold Tree will first be performed at The Brattleboro Museum and Arts Center, followed by other New England venues.
So far we have received funding from The Henson Foundation, The Vermont Arts Council, Scott Elliott of Wellington Management, and a donation of gold from a mysterious woman. We seek your help in completing this ambitious project.
(1)Watching our Kickstarter proposal, (2) donating any amount, large or small - it all adds up, and (3) please forward this to anyone you feel might be interested in our project. Many Thanks for your support, and for your patience. Julia Zanes, Donald Saaf and The Bluebird Marionette Theater
