Happy Together -  A Thank You

There are so many people to thank and so little space. What an incredible production. With over 75 people helping to make the play a success, this annual theater event is a good example of TGS community members working with a common purpose and focus to create a high quality and very special event.

One of the highlights, of many great moments during the four night run, was the attendance of two or our four co-founders at Thursday night's play, as well as other important folks from the early days. Kitty Shumlin and Dottie Richardson attended and told me they thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Also in attendance, among others, were George and Laura Heller and Veronica Brelsford. In fact, I just received an email from Dottie that I will share with you.

Dear Steve,
Just a quick note to thank you for all the arrangements made for Kitty, the Hellers, and myself. It made the evening so easy to enjoy. I feel so welcome at the school these days and it is such fun to see  "what's doing" and to see so many of the people I worked with. The play was great fun, Kitty and I were chuckling about it still, as we met Monday for exercise class. You have some really nice voices to draw upon and I know it took a lot of people to put that all together. I only wish I could thank each and every one for the great evening. Thanks again.
Dottie

My personal thank you to one and all who helped and attended the performances. I know the students really appreciated your support.

Steve

 TGS and the Strolling Heifers
This year's "Strolling of the Heifers" parade will be on June 2 in Brattleboro. Once again TGS students will march in the parade to represent the school, and show our presence in the community. Following last year's success, after the parade TGS will have a booth on the Retreat lawn where we will have marketing materials for the school and sell crepes!

The parade is the signature event of a weekend of farm and food friendly activity that some estimate draws 50,000 people to the Brattleboro area. It is a great thing to be a part of, and important for TGS to have a presence. We are still working on a theme for our participation, ("Healthy food makes great kids?") and  William will help with a creative project for kids to make. We will have T-shirts for all "Strollers" to wear.

Details on location to meet, exact timing, and other logistics will come later, but it has generally been on Flat Street at 9:00, and the parade is done by 10:30 at the Retreat.

We will need some parent chaperones to walk with the students and carry a school banner and we are still finalizing the help we will need on the retreat lawn, manning our booth and cooking crepes. Contact Michael Hornsby (mhornsby@brimstoneconsulting.com) if you are interested in joining in.

Girls on the Run 5K
Girls on the Run 5K - Anyone can participate!

On Saturday, May 19, 2012, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Girls on the Run will participate in the Girls on the Run 5K event in Brattleboro. The 5k is a non-competitive, family-friendly event where everyone is a winner! In 2011 more than 2,000 enthusiastic girls, families, and community members joined us at the 5k events (in Bratt. and Essex J.) to celebrate their health!

The event takes place at Brattleboro Union High School and the "race" begins at 10:00. Come early for freebies, fun, and warm-ups.

We invite you to join us as participants or cheerers!  Participating is $20 for adults and $10 for students. CHEERING IS FREE! All participants are encouraged to move at their own pace. Walking is okay! And strollers are okay, too! Please leave the pooches at home though.

You can find more information AND register by following the link below or by mailing in the flyers you will find outside Tammy's office or the teachers' work room.

ANNUAL FUND 2012 UPDATE

Thank you to all who have generously contributed to this year's Annual Fund. We have reached a total of $65,000, which is nearing 2/3 of our $100,000 goal! Please help us keep this great momentum going by encouraging members of our community who have not yet given to make an Annual Fund contribution. We have 100% participation from our Board and hope to reach the same percentage rate with parents, staff, and faculty.

Saturday, May 19 - Next Stage Arts Project
The Putney based, non-profit arts organization is very pleased to announce that renowned author and educator Dr. Carol Gilligan will appear at Next Stage on at 7pm. "The Scarlet Letter: An Evening with Carol Gilligan" will incorporate readings as well as discussion with the audience. Gilligan will be joined by special guest and local author Elayne Clift.

Dr. Gilligan and Ms. Clift will read from their complementary works, followed by a presentation by Dr. Gilligan titled "A is for Able: The Legacy of Hester Prynne." The talk is inspired by a line from Hawthorne's tale: "Many people...said that [the scarlet A] meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength," and will focus on the relevance of Hester's strength in today's political climate.

Prior to the Saturday night event at Next Stage, Dr. Gilligan will facilitate a workshop/discussion event for high school students at The Putney School. Emily Jones, Director of The Putney School, noted, "The community eagerly anticipates Dr. Gilligan's visit and we're so pleased to be working with Next Stage Arts to provide this wonderful opportunity to The Putney School students."

Next Stage Arts Project presents a wide range of cultural events, including lectures, readings, concerts and films. Next Stage is located at 15 Kimball Hill, Putney, VT. 802 287-8500. For additional info and tickets to the Saturday evening performance, please visit are www.nextstagearts.org or facebook.com/nextstagearts.

Host a student from Spain - Host a student from Spain this summer with Home Stays USA. Every year students come to this area from Bilbao, Spain. "The experience for us was excellent. Our student was easy going, helpful, very pleasant and very motivated to learn English. We also really liked her as a person and became friends. We'd like her to come back! This was also such a great experience for my daughter to see how brave our student was to come here for a month. I hope that my daughter will consider a program like this to learn Spanish!"

Host mother Karen from Vermont

This year the dates of the program are June 29-July 30. The students range from 13 years to 17 years. Visit the organization's website at homestaysusa.org.

The host family receives a $600 stipend and the head leaders of the program will be here during the summer as well.

Please feel free to contact Liz Jackson (parent of Nathaniel in 1st grade). She has been working with this organization for a few summers now and can answer some of your questions.
