PARENTS AS PARTNERS
Many of you have heard me talk about the importance of parents as partners to the education of our students at TGS. As I was looking through the TGS Student and Parent Handbook, I was reminded of the value of parents as partners and the many ways parents can be involved in their children's education, while supporting our school. On page 19 of the handbook it states:
At TGS, we depend on volunteerism and parent participation. The Grammar School is able to offer a program with extra life and vitality because of our parents' interest in, and support of, our educational goals. Coaching sports, chaperoning field trips, assisting in the ski programs, helping in the library, offering presentations, working on special classroom projects, creating costumes for plays, and coordinating fundraising events are just a few of the ways parents contribute to their children's education each year. Because parents are so vital to the success of their children's education, parental involvement in the school is crucial.
The current handbook is on the Parents page of our website.
I suggest you take a moment to visit this section of the handbook for more details on many important and meaningful ways to get involved at TGS. Thanks for all you do!

GLOBAL EDUCATION FUNDRAISER!
| OUR GLOBAL EDUCATION THEME CONTINUES! As in the past two years, the Grammar School community will extend our studies to a world service project. Specific to this year's focus on the culture of Tanzania, TGS students will work to help provide youth from Leyeyo's village of Longido sufficient funds to attend four years of high school. Specifically, we have established a school-wide goal of $1,000 that will be donated to LOOCIP (Longido Community Integrated Program, www.loocip.org). This is an organization that Leyeyo's American parents, Paul Weber and Sarah Messenger, have donated to in the past.
WHEN? Throughout the month of April. It is our hope that most, if not all, of the fundraising effort will take place during April. Of course, homeroom teachers will discuss with their respective classes some flexibility in the time frame in order to meet individual schedules, needs, etc.
HOW? During the final days of March, classroom teachers will discuss with our students the goal and process of this school-wide effort. Key Points: WE WISH TO EMPHASIZE CHORES/SERVICE BENEFITS AS A MEANS TO EARN MONEY. In homerooms, students will brainstorm possible ideas. Homeroom teachers will forward these to parents.
Thank you for your support, and please feel free to contact your child's teacher with any questions.

Annual Fund '12 Update: Thank you to all who have generously contributed to this year's Annual Fund. We have reached a total of $64,000, which is nearing 2/3 of our $100,000 goal! Please help us keep this great momentum going by encouraging members of our community who have not yet given to make an Annual Fund contribution. We have received 100% participation from our Board and hope to reach the same percentage with all of our constituencies.
Spring '12 Dinner/Auction: May 18
Planning is well underway for this final parent-driven fundraiser for the 2011-2012 school year. This is truly a fun event and there are many areas of opportunities to contribute. Your Class Parent will be communicating with you to provide information on the specific function your class has been assigned. If you have an item or service to donate to the auction (thank you!), please contact Alyson Opsahl or Nancy Brooks with your information. For any additional information, please contact your Class Parent or Pauline O'Brien, pobrien@thegrammarschool.org or 802-387-5364, ext. 106.

The Student Council has been busy! Julie Forsythe came to the meeting last Friday to thanks SC members who are helping with the Senior Lunches at Putney Cares. She also announced plans for the Putney Student Corps All-School Volunteer Day, a special effort designed to help area organizations accomplish specific tasks and chores. This Volunteer Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, and TGS Student Council members who are available to help will work together with students from other area schools for two hours in the morning, have lunch together, and spend another two hours working in the afternoon. In addition, Julie spoke briefly about possible plans for Green Up Day, and about the importance of spending some time this spring getting organized for fall projects. Finally, she informed us that the funding was in place for securing a VISTA Volunteer to be the Putney Student Corps administrator.
The Student Council is also organizing the upcoming TGS Talent Show. Auditions will be held Thursday and Friday (March 29 and 30), and the show will be on April 11 at All School Meeting. Please join us for this amazing display of student talent.
