FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Congratulations to Our Alums at Vermont Academy Vermont Academy has announced the names of area students who have placed on the High Honors, Honors, and the Deans List for the first semester of the 2011-2012 school year. Seven TGS alums garnered High Honors, four achieved Honors, and three of our graduates were named to the Dean's List. Congratulations to all former TGS students - we are proud of you!
I am also happy to share with you that our students traditionally do very well in their chosen secondary schools, and the VA announcement verifies what admissions counselors at our receiving schools have told me over the past six years. They have informed me that students leave TGS prepared and come to their schools ready for academic challenges, and often excel in their studies. TGS graduates are confident and independent thinkers who can advocate for themselves and are resilient, creative, and imaginative.
Life Skills Nights at TGS beginning Monday, February 27 from 6:30-7:30pm. Our Life Skills teacher, Karen Blumberg, will be hosting evening workshops and question and answer sessions dealing with a range of topics that affect the parents and students of TGS. On the first evening, Karen will begin these sessions with a talk about kids and development, and the latest ideas in her field on the adolescent brain, which can really help inform parents. She will touch on how to know when there may be problems, social issues, etc., and answer questions. She also will ask what parents really want to hear about for the next two sessions. Refreshments and childcare will be provided.
Dates for the next two sessions are Monday, April 9 and Monday, May 21 from 6:30-7:30pm. These evenings are sponsored by the TGS Parent Advisory Council, which is made up of the class parents for each grade level.
Sincerely,
Steve

LIBRARY BIRTHDAY PARTY TOMORROW
|
Celebrate! The Library's 52nd Birthday is Tomorrow
On Thursday, February 9, the school will celebrate our wonderful library with a fun birthday party. The celebration includes student entertainment, opening gifts, and delicious cupcakes. If you would like to send a gift, but are like me and wait until the very last minute, you might want to consider a gift certificate from a bookstore or a check. A wish list can be viewed online at the Library Page. Village Square Booksellers in Bellows Falls has a special display of books from the wish list plus some great paperbacks. Books may also be ordered online at http://www.villagesquarebooks.com/grammar-school-library-52nd-birthday-wishlist, and I'll make sure that they are delivered to the library in time for the party.
A big thanks to to everyone who volunteered to bake cupcakes for our celebration. I believe we have enough coming. (A special note to these cheerful bakers: Alyson, Ann-Michele, Michelle, Nancy, Jan, Beth, Carlotta, Emily, Christy, Jen, Juliet, and Laura, please leave the cupcakes in the faculty room in the morning. Thanks.)
As always, we are grateful for the generous support you give to the library. If you have any questions, please contact me at school, home (869-1467), or by email at pderby@thegrammarschool.org.
Thank you, Ponnie

FRIDAY YUM YUMS - a possible lunch option coming your way from the student council!
|
Would you like to help lessen The Grammar School's carbon footprint, and receive a healthy and yummy snack and lunch for your child?! We, as part of the student council, are polling The Grammar School community to see if there is interest in this idea. We are purchasing a few lunch and snack varieties from the Putney Co-op. You will be able to choose from a small menu for your child's lunch for five dollars, or include snack for an extra two dollars. If you are interested in this healthy and yummy option, please email student council members Ona Hauert or Hannah Oxholm with a quick YES, we would love the idea, or NO, it wouldn't work for our family. Thank you, TGS Student Council

Thanks from TGS Student CouncilStudent Council Updates
The Student Council meets over lunch at the Upper School every Friday. The members of the SC have organized themselves into smaller committees, where much of the group's business is accomplished. Currently there are five main committees: Valentine's Dance, Community Service, Sledding Party/Community Potluck, Cancer Awareness, and Healthy Snack and Lunch Options. A typical SC meeting starts with introducing the student Moderator, appointing a timekeeper, and hearing reports from each committee regarding its goals, objectives, and progress so far. Aly Silbey moderated last week's meeting, in which the SC received an update from HOS Steve regarding plans for the exciting TGS Solar Energy Project. We also spent time planning the annual TGS Talent Show (to be held on Wednesday, April 11). Like last year, the Student Council will coordinate this year's show, from advertising and sign-ups to auditions and running the show itself. Finally, we spoke about the possibility of hosting a get-together with the Putney Central School Student Council sometime this spring. Several committees then broke off to finish some business before the meeting adjourned. The agenda for next week includes revisiting the list of activities, tasks, and ideas generated by last year's SC, as well as updating plans for the upper school Valentine's Dance, the Sledding/Community Potluck (Friday, February 24), our Community Service efforts, Cancer Awareness week, and the Healthy Lunch option (see the Wednesday Notice!) that will be available soon. Respectfully submitted for the Student Council, Ken Brautigam

A Note from the Nurse

Strep Throat and Whooping Cough We have had several cases of Strep Throat at TGS in the last few weeks and there is a local outbreak of Pertussis, commonly called Whooping Cough. In light of this, I just wanted to remind everyone about ways to prevent the spread of bacteria, as well as signs and symptoms of these two conditions. Click here for more information. To help prevent the spread of viral and bacterial illnesses: - Keep yourself healthy by getting proper rest, regular exercise, and eating a healthy diet.
- Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
- Stay home if you are sick.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your arm when you cough or sneeze.
- Wash your hands often and well with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. (Especially after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose and before preparing foods or eating.)
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- If you are sick with a fever or flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
For more information about Strep Throat and Pertussis, please visit www.cdc.gov and/or www.healthvermont.gov. If you believe that your child has strep throat or pertussis, please keep him/her home from school and see your healthcare provider then notify the school as soon as a diagnosis is confirmed. Please contact me if you have any questions. Thank you, Sara Dunbar, RN sdunbar@thegrammarschool.org |

Do you have child aged 2-5 who is interested in making art?
Taught by TGS mom Collin Leech, February 29 begins the next 6 week session of The Tots Class at River Gallery School. We explore all sorts of mediums in a fun and age appropriate, process oriented way. Although your child will bring home beautiful things, this class is designed to let children explore at their own pace, in their own way. A flexible framework of exciting projects is presented each week. The classes are on Wednesdays 10-11:30am. For more information check out Rivergalleryschool.org or call 257-1577.
PUTNEY FOOD SHELF NEEDS ITEMS
Refrigerator:The Putney Foodshelf has a refrigerator that is on its last ice cubes. It is working fine at the moment, but we have noticed when the weather turns warmer it is hard to keep it at a food-safe temperature. Do you have a refrigerator you are getting rid of? Perhaps replacing one? Let us know if you'd like to donate it to the Foodshelf.
Scales:We want to track donations better by using a scale to weigh donated food. Do you have a simple bathroom scale you aren't using? We could put it to good use! Our crates are never overweight!
Cheese Cutter: We get donated cheese from the Vermont Foodbank as well as from Grafton Cheese. It comes in large chunks which we need to cut down and repackage. A cheese cutter would really help out.
If you can help out with any of these items, give us a shout. Call or email Sue at 387-5889 or flockshm@sover.net, and thanks!
