FROM THE DESK OF STEVE LORENZ
Student Leadership Council News
This year I am facilitating a wonderful group of 18 students from grades 6, 7, and 8 who comprise our 2011-2012 Student Leadership Council. Ken Brautigam has recently joined me as the co-facilitator. The Council has brainstormed a list of 20 initiatives for the group's consideration and identified five to work on at the present time. They are: Community Service, Winter Dance/Fundraiser, Skating/ Sledding Party, Cancer Awareness Week, and Healthy Lunch/Snack Choices. Three of our Student Council Members have also been participating as our representatives in a larger group called the Putney Student Corps, which I will report on soon. Students have divided themselves up to serve on committees, and various faculty and staff members are advising and helping each committee to plan, develop, and put into action their initiatives and events.

Last week Michael Sardinas, parent of Hannah in first grade and Technology Administrator at The Putney School, spent our Friday meeting time to instruct student council members on the art and skill of organizing and operating effective meetings. Other adult presenters and helpers this year include Julie Forsythe from Putney Cares, Chris Harlow, Phil Blood, Tammy White, Laurie Fichter, and others.

This year's Council members are, in no particular order: Ellinore Todd-Long, Sophie Basescu, Patrick Lierle, Jack Spanierman, Toby Weed, Libby Green, Carrie Brautigam, Stefan Grallert, Annice Pelletier, Jen Flint, Molly Durling, Susan Flint, Isabel Rodriguez, Tyler Silbey, Hannah Oxholm, Ona Hauert, Roselle Lovel-Smith, and Aly Silbey.

This has been a great group to work with this year.

FEB. 1 FINANCIAL AID DEADLINE

Upcoming Financial Aid Deadline

Greetings. As the deadline for submission of the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) grows closer, I want to highlight some subtle changes in protocol this year.  In The Grammar School's ever-increasing desire to be more sustainable, families applying for financial aid will be encouraged to complete the process online.  Paper copies are available, but please know it is more expensive for families to submit a paper version of the PFS.

Notable Changes:

  • The deadline for submission of the PFS is Wednesday, February 1, 2012.
  • The deadline for submission all supporting documents is Wednesday, February 15, 2012.
  • Supporting documentation includes:
    • W-2s and 1099s;
    • Signed copies of your 2011 IRS 1040 and all schedules;
    • Forms 1065, 1120-S and K-1 Schedules (if applicable);
    • 4056-T (which will be mailed to you in the coming weeks);
    • Business/Farm Statement for self-employed parents.
    • Families must send copies of all supporting documentation directly to:

                            SSS by NAIS

                            Application Processing Center

                            P.O.  Box 449

                            Randolph, MA 02368-0449

  • Award letters (along with a re-enrollment contracts) will be mailed on Thursday, March 15, 2012.

Please refer often to the attached timeline for financial aid, which gives added detail to the abovementioned information.  If you have any questions, please contact me at (802) 387-5364 (ext. 105).

Thanks you in advance for all your work in meeting these important deadlines!

In appreciation,

Phil Blood

Director of Admissions

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
January 26: NO SCHOOL -  Preschool-8th grade conferences 11am to 7pm

January 27: SCHOOL WILL BE IN SESSION - Upper School conferences only

CALL OR EMAIL TAMMY TO SCHEDULE CONFERENCE TIMES - Lower School conferences are 30 minutes and Upper School conferences are 20 minutes per student.

January Upper School Conferences: January conferences for 6th-8th will be with homeroom teachers only. While we received good feedback from parents on the team-based model we used in October (and teachers also felt it was productive to have everyone meet together early in the school year), we don't feel it's needed for each conference. Fall term reports are being mailed home in advance of the conferences, so parents (and homeroom teachers) will have information from all teachers. Twenty minute conferences with homeroom teachers are available on Thursday, January 26 from 11am-7pm, and on Friday, January 27 from 9am-12pm.

6th-8th grade reports will be mailed the third week in January.

Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10am-12pm - Independent School Information Session provides options for families who may be interested in TGS. Encourage friends and prospective TGS families to attend the event at the Marlboro College Graduate Center in Brattleboro. Questions? Email SVTSCHOOLS@GMAIL.COM
BUS DRIVER NEEDED
Anyone interested in getting his or her bus license and driving for the Grammar School? We will cover all the costs. Contact Chris Harlow at charlow@thegrammarschool.org.
SPORTS
BKL practice will be at Grafton Ponds today. Parents are responsible for transporting their children to Grafton - there will be no bus today. Check the Bill Koch League website  for more information.

The Putney Bill Koch League had a fun day of skiing at Grafton Ponds on Sunday. Ten racers and several Lollipoppers from the Putney club participated in the race. Check the website for information about this weekend's race.

US XC SKI NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Thirteen TGS alumni and coaches participated in the Nationals in Rumford, Maine last week. Congratulations to parent Alicia Brelsford Dana who won the 6K adaptive race! Alicia qualified for World Cup races out West later this month.

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF

To quote the Food Shelf staff in Putney: "It takes a village, and neighbors helping neighbors is truly taken seriously by TGS. The 25 families we help weekly are grateful. The continued support of TGS is overwhelming. Thank you!"

For the month of January, the 8th grade class is leading the collection of non-perishable items donated to the Putney Food Shelf. Boxes at the upper school and outside the main office are there for all contributions. Thank you!
