The Grammar School

Wednesday Notice

December 7, 2011

FROM THE DESK OF STEVE LORENZ

8th Grade Mummers
Winter Concert Accolades
Congratulations to all of our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and music/theater educators for a wonderful evening. The quality of the music and the enthusiasm of the performers was outstanding and very much appreciated by the audience. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends who support the music education of our students, both in and out of school. Last night's concert was evidence that the performing arts curriculum at TGS continues to be one of our signature programs.

All School Meetings - Wednesday Afternoons
Students, faculty, and staff meet together once a week for approximately half an hour or more for announcements, presentations, plays, and celebration of the week's birthdays. Speakers, special events, and sharing also occur
Steve reads to 1st graders
at all school meetings. Parents are invited to join us at any of these meetings. The meetings begin at approximately 2:20 pm, to better accommodate parents who might want to attend and then take their children home at the end of the school day. This is my favorite event of each week and I encourage you to join us whenever possible, as it really gives one a sense of the culture of The Grammar School.

Maa'sai Jewelry and Gift Sale
In celebration of the Maa'sai culture and to support the woman of Leyeyo's village, the annual jewelry and gift sale will be held during this week in the faculty room and at the K-4 concert on Tuesday, December the 13 in the 6th grade room.

Jewelry and other handmade objects will be for sale or simply for viewing and enjoyment. According to Paul and Sarah there will be necklaces ($5 to $30, most in the $15 range), lots of earrings ($10-$15), bracelets ($5-$10 except the safety pin ones ($20), fireplace brooms ($10), a few batiks ($15-$25), shukas (as tablecloths or curtains? ($20), key rings ($5), the Tingatinga paintings, and various other cultural artifacts and pictures.

Leyeyo is an eighth grader who came to us from  Longido, Tanzania in first  grade. Paul and Sarah, his American parents, want people to see that Leyeyo's home is a unique and special place.  Looking and not buying is totally fine.
SECRET SANTA
Holiday Fun! The eighth grade is organizing the annual TGS Secret Santa draw, in conjunction with a food drive for The Putney Food Shelf. This is a school-wide activity that involves all faculty and staff as well as students from K-8th grade. Each person will draw the name of someone in the school. The drawings will be completed by Monday, December 12. Then, until December 20, we write notes to the person for whom we are Secret Santas, giving hints as to who we are, and, perhaps, including a little surprise if it is convenient. Remember not to tell anyone whom you have drawn, as it is secret! Monday, the week of December 19, everyone brings in a gift with a value under $6 for the person he or she drew, AND an item to donate to The Putney Food Shelf.   On the last day of school, 12/21, we will have a Secret Santa Assembly, when gifts are distributed and the food we have collected is presented to Putney Family Services. If you have questions, please email lfichter@thegrammarschool.org.

Bill Koch Ski League
- TGS will again host the local BKL club here on Wednesday afternoons for recreational and competitive skiers. This child based cross-country program for 6-14 year olds is an opportunity to learn and improve skiing skills while playing games and touring our trails and skimming across our neighbor's fields. We will need parent volunteers to help manage our enthusiastic skiers on these Wednesday afternoons. No skills required.

Benefit for the Cure
Molly Durling is collecting the pink lids from Yoplait yogurt to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. For each lid collected, Yoplait sends 10 cents to the fund. Last year Molly collected over 500 lids, and she would like to beat that number this year.
