FROM THE DESK OF STEVE LORENZ
| Global Education Theme We are very excited to begin our Our Global Education Study and celebration of Leyeyo, an eighth grade student from Tanzania who has been at TGS for five years. Our study began last week with an hour and a half presentation about the Maasai Culture and Tanzania. The presentation, consisting of a slide show, talk and displays, was prepared and presented by Leyeyo and his U.S. parents, Sarah and Paul. As we celebrate the Maasai culture and Leyeyo, individual classes have been discussing and studying various aspects of the culture, history, and geography of this region of Africa, which encompasses Tanzania and Kenya.
Today, and for several subsequent Wednesdays (November 2, November 9, November 16, and November 30) from 12:50-2:15, we will mix our students into multiage groups to participate in various faculty/staff led activities. These activities include: Cooking, Beading and Fabric, Tinga Tinga painting, Games, Beading Design, Creating a Marketplace, and Savanna Animals.
Please feel free to visit or join us on any of these days.
Welcome to our New Trustees I am pleased and excited to welcome three new trustees to the board: Julie Burns, current parent of Olivia in first grade; Natalie Thomson, current parent of Quinn in seventh grade and Gwyneth in fifth grade; and Bill Helm, current grandparent of Abby Brennan in fifth grade and Katy Brennan in seventh grade. We will have a more in depth profile of them in the near future. These new trustees join our nine other board members: Ray Hutchins, Reggie Rockefeller, Wendy Brennan, Alyson Opshal, Kimona Alin, Mark Long, Maggie Smith, Peter Howe, and Marcia Leader.
HOS Trustees Report Please find my October Report to the Trustees on my HOS Page on the TGS website. The trustees met last night and had an informative and productive evening. The Grammar School Board of Trustees is looking for someone to take notes at their meetings. Trustees meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month from August to June at TGS from 6-8 p.m. A note taker would need to attend each meeting and record in detail the work of the trustees, and compile their notes into minutes. The notetaker would receive $50 payment for each meeting.

Bluebird Orchestra CD Release Party October 29 at 7:00 pm at The Hooker Dunham Theater, 139 Main Street, Brattleboro, VT, hookerdunham.org, 802-254 9276.
Hatched from the same nest as The Bluebird Marionette Theatre of Saxtons River, The Orchestra draws its influences from diverse corners, including the Carter Family, The Incredible String Band, Kurt Weill, and Thelonious Monk, while always keeping one foot in traditional American roots music. In any particular tune, you may encounter elements of folk, rock, early Jazz, Klezmer or Polka music. The new self-titled CD is a collection of songs written by Saaf with his wife, artist Julia Zanes, but the band itself is a true collaboration of talented local musicians. The ensemble features Donald Saaf on vocals, guitar, and reed organ, Duke Johnson on the standup bass, Rick Contino on pedal steel, and Paul Mctaggart on drums. The CD also includes the amazing Anna Patton as a guest artist. Their music has been described as beautiful, sometimes sad, poignant and funny, sung and played with gusto, and sure to delight any audience. The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center invites children and adults of all ages to participate in its Fourth Annual LEGO Contest & Exhibit. Entries must be delivered to the Museum on Wednesday, October 26, 4-6 p.m. The opening of the exhibit and awards ceremony will take place Friday, October 28 at 5 p.m., and entries will remain on display through the weekend. For complete guidelines and entry forms, visit www.brattleboromuseum.org or call 802-257-0124, ext. 101.
On Thursday, Peter Mulvey returns to Rockingham with a show at Main Street Arts. Peter is one of the more incredible artists working today - his shows are never boring, and you're guaranteed great guitar, great voice, great songs, great stories. You could sort of compare him to Leo Kottke on guitar, but there's a dirtier funk groove in there, too. You could liken his voice to somewhere between Greg Brown and the guy from the Waterboys who sang "Fisherman's Blues." You could say that his songs and stories dwell in the space between hope and darkness, desperation and the divine, but you'd need to throw in his love for Tin Pan Alley and old show tunes, too. And none of it would be fair to Peter Mulvey because he is -when all's said and done- Peter Mulvey. One of the absolute best artists working today. A guy who keeps it real and keeps us in love with music.
Sure hope you'll be there.
Main Street Arts is located at 37 Main Street in Saxtons River. Doors open at 7:00, with showtime at 7:30. Opening the show will be Carsie Blanton. Tickets are $18 advance and are on sale at Village Square Books and Fat Frank's in Bellows Falls, Misty Valley Books in Chester, and at Turn it Up! in Brattleboro, and online at brattleborotix.com.
Angel tickets (guaranteed front-row seating) are $30 and available online only. The show is a joint presentation of Vermont Festivals, Flying Under Radar and WOOL-FM. For further information, visit flyingunderradar.com or call 802-463-3669. Partial proceeds benefit Main Street Arts. Beverage service by Pleasant Valley Brewing Company.
