The Grammar School

Wednesday Notice

October 12, 2011

FROM THE DESK OF STEVE LORENZ

It Is Medieval Faire Time! In case you haven't noticed (only kidding), it is Medieval Faire time at TGS. As you know, at TGS we do not require a certain amount of volunteer hours from our parents, as some schools do. That is because our parents are always generous with their time and respond well to the needs of the school.

The  Medieval Faire is one of those times when we need "all hands on deck." As you have been told, this event takes the entire TGS community to make it happen. It is the favorite event of the students here at The Grammar School as well as a favorite event of many children and adults in the surrounding community. It is not just a fundraiser for TGS, it is also a gift to our community and a great public relations event.

You may or may not know that all 5th-8th graders volunteer their time on the day of the event as a service to their school. The length of their time varies from two to four hours between 10:00 am-4:00 pm. Yesterday an all school email went out asking for your additional help. Any extra time or donations of food or money will help. Thank you!

2011 Medieval Faire Dedicated to Edmund Brelsford

Edmund Brelsford performing at the Medieval Faire
This year we will be dedicating the Medieval Faire to the memory of Edmund Brelsford, truly a medieval and renaissance man. Edmund was a part of The Grammar School community for over 40 years, as a parent of five and grandparent of six TGS students, chair of the board of TGS trustees, and he was a huge proponent of the Medieval Faire.

To quote former TGS teacher and Head of the School Nancy Calicchio, "As Chair of the Board, Edmund guided the school and promoted the best of our ambitions. He celebrated the academics; he was one of the most educated men I knew and he loved learning... When he came to the Medieval Faire, those days the Medieval dinners, in Renaissance garb, he was a Renaissance Man with that breadth of knowledge and that flare of Florentine humanism."

It was my good fortune yesterday to be able to attend a celebration of his wonderful life. He will be truly missed by the TGS community. To you, Edmund, we dedicate this year's Medieval Faire.

Thank you,
Steve Lorenz

MEDIEVAL FAIRE COMMUNITY SERVICE
chrisknightSince times long past, knights and ladies of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th classes of the Kingdom of Grammar have given of their time to assist the littlest knights and princesses at the Faire. They help the great knights and ladies in the selling of the raffle tickets, in the pushing of the dragon up the hill, in the painting of little faces, in the retrieving of arrows, and a multitude of other tasks. This is called service to the community, and in the tradition of chivalry, everyone is expected to help.

In plain speak, we need 5th-8th grade students to work for a period of time during Faire day (October 15). Their participation is vital to the success of the day, and their efforts are much appreciated by all of us, great and small. Tara will be organizing and assigning jobs; please let her know (tmeinhar@thegrammarschool.org) by the end of this week if your 5th-8th grader will be here only for a partial day, or will not be here at all. Students will still have time to enjoy the Faire, but we also need everyone's participation to make things run smoothly.

Many thanks for your support.

Tara

Games and races on the East Lawn (behind the Currier Center) commence at noon. At 12:45 there's a parade, followed by contra dancing on the East Lawn. Join us for an all-school sing, featuring the Putney Community Orchestra, in Calder Hall at 2:00. And all day long there are crafts booths, fresh produce, and community groups serving tasty grilled food and baked goods, plus enough freshly pressed apple cider to wash it all down. No charge for parking, admission, or, if you're a kid, all the bouncy house, bouncy slide, and bouncy obstacle course fun you can handle.
