MEDIEVAL FAIRE Saturday, Oct. 15

From The Desk of Steve Lorenz

Welcome To The Grammar School's 51st Year!

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I welcome one and all as we start the new school year. What a joyful beginning. It was wonderful seeing everyone yesterday. So many smiling faces and of course, a few nervous ones. In light of recent events in New England, I think school will be just the perfect antidote to some of the challenges many of our families, students, and their communities are facing. School might even be considered a safe haven and a return to normalcy for many of our students. That said, our thoughts are and will continue to be with those folks in our states who are struggling with a variety of personal  and property losses as well as transportation issues.

Our Core Values

I find the beginning of the school year is a good time to think about what are the Core Values we espouse to at The Grammar School. What is it that we value in the education of our students? As stated in our Strategic Plan document:

*The Grammar School values the imagination and independent thinking of children.

*The Grammar School integrates challenging academics with engagement in the arts and outdoors.

*The Grammar School curriculum cultivates social and environmental awareness as well as responsibility in the broader world.

*The Grammar School values outstanding teaching.

*The Grammar School fosters acceptance of each person's uniqueness and strengths.

And we most certainly value our students and parents. Best wishes to all for a happy and successful school year.

Best,

Steve Lorenz

Flood Relief Food Drive

The Grammar School faculty and staff met on Tuesday to discuss how the school community (students, staff, faculty, and parents) could help flood victims. The decision was to double our usual food drive efforts for the month of September. So, besides our usual collection for the Putney Food Shelf it was decided to do a very specific food collections event on the evening of our Back to School Pot Luck Dinner on Friday September 16th.

The request we are making is that each family bring in food products (dry and canned) the evening of the potluck. TGS will then distribute the donated items to various local food shelves. Although many schools and individuals are participating in clean up efforts, the TGS staff and faculty felt that the potential health hazards for students and adults were too risky at this point in time.

Teachers will be talking briefly with their students over the next few days about this effort and why we are doing it. In advance, thank you for your support.

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF:  This is a school-wide, yearlong community service we instituted a few years ago. Each month a class leads the collection of donated non-perishable food items and toiletries. All are welcome to donate at any time. There is always a box outside the main office for your donations. FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER THE SIXTH GRADE IS THE CLASS  COLLECTING. A box is in their homeroom should you wish to bring items there. Thank you for your generous support of our school's local community.
